As far as translations go this will probably be the next thing released as I believe it is in the quality control stage. So it should be sometime relatively soon.

Interesting, I hadn't realized this was in progress. I tried to play it a few years back, but I ground to a halt a little way into Hinata's route because the characters completely failed to engage me. Hopefully an English version - and possibly starting with a different route next time - will help.

Probably before this summer I think. They seem to stick to a one game a month release schedule, roughly.

Speaking of Steins;Gate JAST has a Facebook page up and is counting down to something. Not sure what it's counting down to, since seven days from now is not the release date and the "actual super final please we're not lying this time" release date has already been announced.

There's some VN called Fading Hearts out on Steam. I have heard some good things, but the screenshots don't really do it for me. Is it actually any good?

Continuing with chapter 3 of Higurashi.

  • Irie is probably the same "manager" mentioned in the first chapter. I only vaguely remember him from that chapter, but he was mentioned as "suspicious" in the All-Cast Review Session of the second chapter.
  • Irie's imminent death is not unlikely. Getting character focus like this has been a death sentence for Tomitake, Takano, and Shion.
  • Wow, Irie is a creepy pervert. Keiichi and Rena can be pretty bad sometimes, but Irie is on a completely different level, as Nasu would say.

Edit: Actually, Irie is just a normal guy with a weird sense of humor. Whew. That just makes him more likely to die, naturally.

Apparently, according to Jesu Otaku, a decent anime reviewer, it's "The Room" of VNs.

"Y2K orphans"? That's got to be a parody of the implausible tragic backstories VN characters tend to have, right? Surely they didn't come up with an idea like that with complete seriousness?

I remember thinking Fading Hearts might be decent because it had decent art, which is usually pretty dogshit in most OELVNs. Then I actually started reading it and holy hell is it a mess. It has crappy RPG battles, schedule management with part time jobs and skills, magical girls with completely obvious secret identities, fictional literature in the story that is both really pointless and ridiculously hamfisted in its relation to the plot, a parallel world (I think) and our world with an alternate history, I think there's a bad end with the end of the world, a love triangle...

I didn't even get that far into it, it's just like the dude who made it stuffed everything he liked about every VN or dating sim he ever played ever into one game and had zero ability to pull it off.

I can definitely see that. I'm not too sure management is going to be any good here, I apparently have something called Personal Strength (PS) and it goes down with every one of my decisions. I have a separate Stress stat, so that's good too. According to the in-game tutorial, PS is necessary for me to make decisions at certain points, otherwise I will let characters walk over me.

Speaking of! The tutorials. You couldn't tell me that necessary poo poo BEFORE I started to play? The game actually integrates it into the character dialogue. It's as awkward as you think it is. Which says something, seeing as the dialogue has all the subtlety of a nuclear detonation.

What's funny is it stresses on steam how it has REAL CHOICES but it seems about as route-driven as every other VN ever made. Who knows, maybe I'm missing something.

OK guys, it's come to my attention that some of y'all are really forgetting this thing:

quote:

Some requests for this thread to follow
Don't be creepy. Don't post about how much you love *insert character here* and want to marry her. Don't post about how hot a sex scene was because no one cares. Don't post about games that would belong in the Awful Anime column of the main site. Laughing at terrible porn in games where porn isn't the primary focus is OK but please don't consume the thread with talk about the finer points of rape scenes in Tsukihime. You really shouldn't post about sex scenes at all really, but this is especially the case if you're being weird about it.

This isn't a suggestion, this is a genuine rule and thing I'm asking y'all to follow. I realize Visual Novels have a lot of weird sex poo poo, even "good ones", but for the love of god just stop talking about it. I've only let this thread continue to exist on this simple request since I know they're popular. I'm going to be cracking down harder going forward.

Thanks.

I take back what I said, PS is loving really easy gain. Pretty funny considering how much they emphasize its importance.
I beat the game, and got a lopsided ending. On the one hand, Mystica murdered Rina. So that's one side of the love triangle gone.
On the other hand, I ended up with Claire. Seeing as that's what the original goal was, I guess mission success? :confuoot:
Bonus points about how she didn't shut up with "What about Rina? What about Rina? What about Rina? What about Rina?"

The one funny thing is that I never found a Shadow Creature. Not a single one. This made for some confusing dialogue when my character thought "the Shadow Creatures did this?" or "I can't tell her I fight Shadow Creatures" at certain points.

And the writing tries to deal with abuse in a relationship but it is absolutely not up to the task.

Personally, I think the thing about ML:A reactions being tiring is that just about everyone who plays it and posts on here tends to come from similar backgrounds/experiences, so the reactions tends to be very samey too. You pretty much know exactly which scenes they're going to comment on and in what ways.

Like, I think maybe it would be more interesting if we could get an actual War Veteran or something to read through MLA, but then again they probably wouldn't play a VN out of their own free will anyway.

I played MLA long after I was diagnosed with PTSD, but it isn't really war related at all. I didn't post any of my reactions, but I can say that the PTSD arc of Muv Luv Alternative was brilliantly executed. It felt a lot like what I went through when I came home after my traumatic event, so it was doubly effective on me.

You should probably do the Makina and Sachi routes last; either order is fine, but I like Sachi's route more so I'd suggest reading it last. The Yumiko route is clearly the worst and you won't really lose anything by skipping it, so feel free to drop it if it isn't doing anything for you.

I'd also really recommend pacing yourself during the Common route. If you ever think, "Surely I'm almost at the end!", then you're probably closer to the half-way point. If you feel yourself starting to get burned out, take a break. It's very long but it's also very good, so it'd be a shame to not read it because you're worn out.

So I finished Sweet Fuse. Shirabe (the widower) and Mitarashi (musclehead) had the best routes by far. Like, actually really genuinely good and I'm having trouble deciding which of the two I liked more. Shidou and Meoshi had cool routes too. Wakasa and Urabe were alright but I didn't really get into either of them. Makoto though... (spoilers for unlockable route) His route is basically the Stockholm Syndrome route. The protagonist dealing with his bullshit feels in-character, falling in love doesn't. Also I screwed around with the choices and he killed me seven times (I counted). gently caress that guy and his itchy trigger finger.

General opinions on each character/route:
Shirabe: Having a 32 year old widower with a young daughter as a potential love interest in an otome game is weird. Having this route end up being actually really good is weirder. I about died when his kid said "It's like I have a papa and a mama!" at the end scene :3:. He has my favorite "Get Mad" scene on the common route ("You're right. I'm a terrible father.").
Mitarashi: Mitarashi now makes two playboy-ish characters that I ended up liking a lot (first was Yuuya in Hatoful). He's a musclehead character with a lot of cute moments. I liked how his route had him trying to pull the whole "I'm gonna protect you" thing and you're just like "nah bro we're in this together!", the "Get Mad" choices really shined on this route. He sure tends to get beat up a lot, but that's one of the things that makes him cute.
Meoshi: Surprisingly cute considering his character description is "NEET game otaku who has trouble dealing with girls". The scenes in the haunted house replica attraction were pretty intense. Has the best mid-route plot twist in the game with SUDDENLY UZI WIELDING ZOMBIES, HUNDREDS OF THEM.
Shidou: I was thinking he would be the overconfident douche character, but he ended up being the most friendly of the group while his confidence levels were around "confident enough to be a cool dude, and also to know when he needs help from others". A reliable guy who has a few really clever scenes (that trick in day 2 was great). I liked how he immediately apologizes for being a dick in day one, and by day three has come to rely on the protagonist for her sharp mind.
Wakasa: Kind of an annoying brat, but less so than similar characters voiced by Yuki Kaji. I'm really thankful this game didn't have the budget for an insert song and I didn't have to hear Yuki Kaji actually try and sing. His route was about him recognizing that he's a shithead at least, so that's a plus.
Urabe: Ugh, dad issues. Also he keeps you locked up for like a third of his route, not cool Urabe. I did like the three time in a row "What's wrong with you?!" scene near the end of his route though, so it wasn't all time wasted.
Makoto: Man gently caress this guy. Unlockable route so everything is a spoiler. OK so I can see the protagonist helping him through his poo poo because that's the kind of girl she is. But falling in love with him works here less than it does on the Urabe route, and that scene at the end where she's like "I'll wait for you" is dumb as gently caress because with everything he's done I can't see how he isn't getting life in jail, or at least something like 25+ years. Also I picked some wrong choices on purpose to see what would happen and he killed me. He killed me seven times! A pretty bad route, would not marry or date or give lap pillows.

Four good routes and two decent ones out of seven ain't bad. I'd highly recommend Sweet Fuse for anyone open to playing an otome game.

My question to the thread is-should I do any of the other routes in extra beyond the main heroines? Like, will I miss any extra story by just ignoring the others?

Every time this comes up, I personally recommend doing Ayamine's route as well, because hers is the only route that has a significant callback in Alt. Tama and Chizuru's routes never really come up again. The fact that Ayamine kind of owns helps too.

Personal thought: I find the side routes more interesting than the main routes because it feels like you actually are getting told a story than with the two mains, but they aren't really necessary. As stated ayamine is probably worth a quick run through, but it's up to you.

Also, I personally don't think we need another streaming reaction thingy. I like to hear people's thoughts in the thread but I find watching people play a VN pretty tedious; I'd rather get a chance to read it here and smile fondly remembering my own experiences playing through, like skipping work for a day after staying up all night reading, and playing for like another 20 hours straight after that when the meaty stuff hit.

Really you should just do whatever you feel like. If after completing the obligatory Sumika/Meiya routes you decide you wouldn't mind more of the same, then go ahead with the side routes.
