Hooplah posted:Talk Talk - Desire; I can't really talk about this album without mentioning the album that came before it, Spirit of Eden (but it came out in 88). Beautiful albums, and even though they're listed alongside Slint when talking about 90's post-rock, they really sound nothing alike and come from totally different scenes. I know you meant to write Laughing Stock, but for one brief moment I was hopeful there was somehow a Talk Talk album I missed. I need more melodic metal bands with catchy riffs and great vocals. Like Dio or Bruce Dickinson great, if that's not too much to hope for. If they're less dumb than your average metal band, that's probably a plus too.

The Lord Weird Slough Feg are exactly what you are looking for; I'm not crazy about their first couple of albums but from 'Down Among the Deadmen' and onward there very few missteps. If absolutely NEED more Dio (and who doesn't?) grab the two Black Sabbath albums with him on vocals ('Heaven and Hell', 'Mob Rules') along with the first three Rainbow albums ('Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow', 'Rising' and 'Long Live Rock 'n' Roll'). If you want something a bit out there you should definitely give Fates Warning a try, especially 'The Spectre Within' and 'Awaken the Guardian'. The latter is easily in my top 20 albums of all time and I'm hard pressed to think of a better progressive metal album ever written. It's questionable as to how metal these bands are, but Witchcraft and Graveyard both do a commendable job of producing their own take on 70's psych rock/metal. It's worth checking out 'Firewood' and 'Legend' by Witchcraft along with Graveyard's self-titled debut.

I'm looking for a recommendation for dubstep, for adding my spotify playlist. Particularly sounding like the following examples: Devin Martin - Killbot http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icZhcQ-bd_M and Doctor P - Big Boss http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmCe3fg7B4w I already have Nero, Excision, Noisia, Deadmau5, Bassnectar, Oxylice. So please let me know if you can think up any others that are just as great.

I'm not sure if it quite qualifies in the former's case, but look into Reso and Broken Note. Them and Nero are among the few bro-ey dubstep producers I can consistently enjoy. Here, have samples: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IuSFpB2r_k https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeYbJNx6TLY Terminal Static is a consistently fantastic album. Found these; If you're trying to block out coworkers, you might want to look for headphones with active noise cancelling. You'll pay more for them, but you'll probably get a better result to what you need. There are two types of noise cancelling, 'passive' just uses padding/foam to suppress outside sounds (which technically ALL headphones do, to some extent), whereas 'active' will pick-up incoming sound waves with a microphone in the headset then recreate oppositional (180 degrees out of phase) soundwaves to effectively cancel out the noise. here's a link to probably the least expensive ones, but they are rated pretty well. amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technic...ywords=ath-anc1 cnet review: http://reviews.cnet.com/headphones/audio-technica-ath-anc1/4505-7877_7-33963360.html

El Gallinero Gros posted:Right. I try so hard Anyways, for Buckley I'd recommend his dad, Tim, as well as Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, and Afghan Whigs. There's also Rufus Wainwright, who is also a son of a songwriter with a soaring voice if that's what you're into. It's hard to recommend people based off of Jeff Buckley because his influences are all over the place, and the people that he influenced sound almost nothing like him (looking at you, dude from Muse) and his influences are all disparate (and very well known, it's insulting to recommend Led Zeppelin to someone) E: Other Jeff Buckley stuff is either acoustic or unfinished. Grace is his only wholly original work, so you're kind of stuck with it. Declan MacManus fucked around with this message at 05:10 on Feb 7, 2014 |

If they're less dumb than your average metal band, that's probably a plus too. Grand Magus have at the very least the "catchy riffs" part down pat, they have simple but great riffs galore. I also personally find JB a fantastic vocalist, he's not ~*MASSIVELY DRAMATIC*~ but charismatic and convincing as hell. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCWbFwF9Uyk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHZraXyHR2E And, probably closer to what you're after: Basically anything with Nils Patrik Johansson on vocals. This guy is the closest thing to Dio reincarnated there is. Not a clone, he has his own voice, but you can hear plenty of echoes of RJD. I'd personally name him among the top 5 classic metal vocalists alive today. Namely: Civil War These guys like historical subjects, which is not surprising as the band was founded by some ex Sabaton members. One EP and one album out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jq43IM1DtRg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTeFpDENCPY Astral Doors An older band than the above, released several albums already. One of the best classic heavy metal bands I know, a real hidden gem. The compilation, Testament of Rock, is a good starting point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fI3fxDMcVV8 (okay, sometimes there's more than "echoes"...) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5NcaoMRRZQ Wuthering Heights My personal favourite of the three. Not quite as straightforward as the other two, this one is more like folky, neoclassical power metal maybe? (Sounds retarded I know, but jesus christ the whole thing just WORKS.) Also, according to what you wished for, their lyrics are a helluva lot better and more clever than the usual metal schtick. Salt is one of my all-time favourite albums. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWrL6NKOM70 (the part starting at 3:10 still blows me the gently caress away) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eblFOXlHDs (catchiest loving chorus ever) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Md99ooEsR84 (god drat those guitar leads are tasty) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZKLySZeHe0 Nordick fucked around with this message at 17:35 on Feb 10, 2014 |

There's a genre of music that I've always liked but can never find very much of. The best way I can describe it is classical music with modern electronic instruments (I've had some luck searching for "electro-classical" but I get a lot of other stuff along with it). I like fugues and harpsichord pieces in particular. Walter/Wendy Carlos (famous for the soundtrack from "A Clockwork Orange") is the most well-known example that fits what I'm looking for. I've checked related artists and found a handful of other artists from the early synthesizer age. I'm wondering if there are more modern artists with this sort of style.

Or one of the Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto collab albums, like Insen? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlq-Mw299IM A lot of electroacoustic would fit, but it's sometimes hard to detect the classical instrumentation used there since it's so highly manipulated.

The first three are probably the most similar in sound but they all evolve it in their own way. Final Fantasy/Owen Pallett is a bit more classical with ambient and techno flourishes. The last two take Beirut and dial it back to all traditional instruments with little to no electronica influence. If you like Owen Pallett then I would suggest trying Pale Young Gentlemen as well.

Do you want female artists who NEVER sing about love? Just about every respectable female artist has sung a song not about love at some point, just like most every male artist has sung about love at some point. Anyway check out Nina Simone, she is a wonderfully angry lady sometimes and sings many songs not about love, but also some about love Actually most lady jazz singers sing many songs about not love. I'm phone posting but look up Strange Fruit by Simone or alternately by Holiday for some righteous racial passion.
