I thought the opening ceremony was really nice actually. NBC's lovely commentating aside. I couldn't give a gently caress what Matt Lauer has to say about the Soviet era and the lack of any acknowledgement of Holodomor or how those horrible soviets minimized the idealization of the individual. gently caress. Also I lolled at the comment about how only the elite few were part of hipster culture in 1950s-60s Russia, as if that isn't true in America today. Edit: loved the overt message about re-population. The real voice belonged to a 7-year-old girl who was replaced because she was deemed not cute enough by a member of China's Politburo. Six years later and I still find this hilarious. Just the image of some Chinese bureaucrat freaking out over something not being adorable enough.

YOU GUYS I was watching the recorded video of the opening ceremonies on CBC's website while browsing the website: they don't have the commercials in the recorded video. They get pretty loving glib about how poo poo Sochi and putin are during the commercials, in audio that I don't think they intended anyone to hear. "Man, look at how empty it is for the opening ceremonies, that is not a good sign." "Yeah, and did you hear the deathly silence when Putin came out? " "Haha, well, I don't know, with the audio rig up here it's all..." "I had my headphones on, it was almost completely silent." "" "I can think of someone else who would get a pretty silent crowd. He's Canadian, eh?" Pretty sure it was 'ol Peter Mansbridge who got the on Harper. Love you Pete.
