I haven't played much Fire Emblem, but from what I have, I haven't experienced any relationship mechanics or much in the way of sensible mechanics. I guess those are new additions? Stupid RNG always loving my runs over

Well, it's a small thing but in Rune Factory 4 your relationship with the townspeople not only makes them stronger but their battle AI also improves significantly.

Try 18 years ago for the first FE game with relationship mechanics.

Huh, guess I never noticed them then. Does the RNG still require blood sacrifices for favor, 'cause if not, looks like I'll have to get back into the series then.

Yeah but I think that's being a little pedantic, they were kind of garbage. I know they had the unit adjacency bonuses written in since the very first FE game but I don't think it was until the GBA Fire Emblems that established the first real support system that wasn't opaque and has continued to be THE fire emblem support system in every sequel since Burning or whatever. I think before that, the last iteration would have been the love system or whatever in Geneology* that sort of carried over to FE5. S-Alpha posted:Huh, guess I never noticed them then. Does the RNG still require blood sacrifices for favor, 'cause if not, looks like I'll have to get back into the series then. The latest game is super easy though on the default difficulties and you can use the mode where people don't permanently die if you don't want to deal with "accidental" blood sacrifice Honestly I can't think of a good reason NOT to play Fire Emblem Awakening if you have even a passing interest in SRPGs though. I think people could give you reasons why not to play some of the other recent Fire Emblem games since they are remakes of FE1 and were experimenting, but Awakening was pitched as basically salvaging the Fire Emblem series because it was doing badly for a little bit. I can't remember the exact interview but they were going to close that IP if Intsys didn't do well with Awakening, so they threw every single idea at the game. Modern Fire Emblem games also have a casual mode that turns off permadeath so random crits don't screw you over quite as badly.

Nate RFB posted:Why don't they let you save mid-mission. Why It took some 90 minutes to get set-up, but I was in the home stretch on that stupid god drat escort mission in March. Had nothing left to do but roll the dice and see if I could get the APC past the boss, since he wasn't moving from his camp. Lost it with about one turn to go. In Fire Emblem for the GBA, on the second last mission, I was doing amazingly, without a single death, just had the boss and a unit to take out. Kill the unit, suddenly two units spawn at the edge of the map, away from the boss, next to one of my units. They kill her. Put down the game for good after that.

Of course when I did beat it all of the certificates went to units that didn't need them

I started playing Trails in the Sky and I really like it so far, have a few questions that I'm sure some of you can probably help with though. First, is it worth finding all the Carnelia books? I don't really want to be consulting a guide all the time so I don't miss any of them. Second, is it worth doing all/most of the Bracer sidequests? Like, is there a reason for gaining as much BP as possible and do they start giving you good rewards and stuff other than money. Third, I'm not sure I get how the turns thing works - I get that using an S craft makes it your turn immediately, but are there other ways to manipulate the turn order as the game seems to be suggesting? THANKS

The Carnelia books get you the strongest weapon for either Joshua or Estelle (you pick one or the other), but it isn't a big deal. You only get them just before the endgame, and the game isn't hard enough that you really need them.

Third, I'm not sure I get how the turns thing works - I get that using an S craft makes it your turn immediately, but are there other ways to manipulate the turn order as the game seems to be suggesting? THANKS BP is good for two things - rewards in this game, and apparently some bonus in the sequel if you get max. The rewards for second and first class are really good (The Grail Locket, which makes you immune to all status effects; and the Gladiator's Belt, which continuously restores CP). That said, like Endorph said, the game isn't hard enough that you need these things, and they're really only necessary if you want to get max BP (which requires beating a boss you wouldn't have to otherwise). Also, you hit first class way before you hit max (290 BP vs. 368 BP) Some crafts (like Joshua's immensely useful Flicker) delay enemy turns, and Schera gets a craft that boosts your turns up the order. You can also mess with the turn order somewhat by casting, and impeding enemy casting, although that's more of a side effect of cast times than anything. Still, if an enemy has an upcoming turn on a critical bonus, it can be pretty fun to see if you can move it to one of your guys by starting to cast instead of attacking normally.

The best way to play Fire Emblem is to play it on whatever the game's hard mode as if it were a Roguelike (play as normal, but if a dude dies, don't even think about resetting).

Apprently its one of those games that big fans of the series might enjoy but the mechanics are a little too basic for most people to get much out of. I might pick it up anyway because I love the idea of a One Piece RPG

Basically, every character's orbment is divided up into so many lines. Estelle and Joshua have 2, but other characters have anywhere between 1 and 4. Now, if you look at a quartz, you'll see that it has some numbers and elements associated with it. HP, for example, has an elemental value of x1 Water. Some quartz have more than one element associated with them. To learn a new arte, you just need the net sum of all elemental values in a line to reach certain thresholds, which can be found in the Bracer Notebook: So Diamond Dust requires a net elemental value of x4 Water, x2 Wind, and x1 Space between all quartz in a single line. If you look at the top right corner of my first screen, the current values in each line are shown. e: Basically everything can be found in the Bracer Notebook, it's really helpful. It actually explains everything I did, just with diagrams, so if you ever have any questions it's a good place to look. Cake Attack fucked around with this message at 16:59 on Feb 7, 2014 |

Hey can anyone give me the lowdown on stuff I need to know going into Divine Divinity? I've always wanted to play it and I saw a friend playing Dragon Knight Saga earlier, and I really wanna play that. Unfortunately I literally can't play a game out of order of release even if they're only barely related. Same with films and books.

I've thought for a while that the PS1 release of Persona 1 would be the worst JRPG I would ever play, but having finished Valkyria Chronicles 2 I think there's a new contender. P1 at least had a decent story (buried under an avalanche of terrible localization). I can't think of a single redeeming feature in VC2.
