Optimize takes into account the strength of the weapon, but not the wielder's weapon rank. Knights have a D in katanas but an S in swords, so even though that starting katana is powerful, there are very few swords that won't be better in the hands of a Knight.

A character's stats in a given job also improve with their job level. Additionally, you need to equip the Two-Handed ability in order to reap its benefits. Without Two-Handed, Knights are more about defense than offense, with their S ranks in armor.

I assume you just got Thief pretty recently?

I think everyone's had that happen: its a combination of Bows being really, really, strong to make up for needing 2 hands, Thief's high dexterity (and Ringabel's naturally high desterity) and there pretty much not being halfway decent weapons available at that point.

Once you play a bit more, you'll find somene with Mythril weapons, but until then your physical damage dealers, bar archers, are pretty weak.

Where are you all grinding? There is a small island in the upper right hand of the map that i've been using, it gives a lot of money and exp, but Job experience not so much, but that's probably true of any part of the game.

The best places to grind are in Chapter 4 right before the first town and in Chapter 5+ on the small island in the top right that is half snow half land.

I upgraded one of Norende shops to get the Falcon Knife (I think it's the lvl. 11 weapon shop), which gives you +20 agility. One of these should let you move faster than the dragon. I gave everyone BP Recovery and Turn Tables (Red Mage) passives, as well as Transience (Ninja) for squeezing in some extra damage. Party comp was Spiritmaster/White Mage, Templar/Ninja, Ranger/Ninja, and uh, I think like Pirate/Ninja. The only important classes are Spiritmaster and Templar, with Ninja secondary on as many guys as possible.

I stuck the Falcon Knife on my spiritmaster who immediately casts Stillness (Both enemies and allies receive no damage for 2 turns). This gives me two turns to set up Utsusemi (Ninja, dodge one physical move) and Rampart (Templar, blocks one physical move, party-wide). This will basically make you unkillable. Some of the dragons will proc some fairly debilitating status (paralyze, stop, etc) so you can either have your spiritmaster cast Fairy Ward to prevent status effects for 5 turns or buy everyone appropriate accessories. Anyone that can defaults and unloads whenever possible.

If you keep your skills in order, you can go through every dragon fight without a scratch and get some sweet JP bonuses.

I used Tiz as Dark Knight/Sword Magic, Agnes as Black Mage/Medication, Ringabel as Templar/White Mage and Edea as Ninja/Piracy. Ringabel kept up Rampart as much as possible, using Red mage support abilities that added to BP helped, Edea used Piracy to keep his speed, attack and defenses low so everyone could outspeed and survive if he got through the rampart. Agnes was backup healing, though usually throwing out damage since she could hit almost all their weaknesses for 6k a pop, and Tiz was just doing as much damage as possible. Which can be substantial with the appropriate sword magic, the sword magic amp and a hit increase from the first tier Sword special ability.

Just make sure you have Rampart up after the dragons use their 'make you vulnerable to their element' move. Their breath attacks hurt. Also, the earth dragon can paralyze you. Luckily the shop inside Grandship sells the paralyze immunity charms, load up on those. None of the other status ailments are were that hard to deal with since you can alpha strike the dragons down pretty quickly.

You need to sleep your system while ingame for it to actually poll for streetpasses. It's dumb, but with my Homepass setup I can get 1-3 villagers every minute. 300 villagers is major overkill like others have noted, but the main draw for me is grabbing Nemesis fights.

Also I'll take Beelzebubs over Bellrophons and their bullshit. "Hmm he changes elements, ok that's fine I can jus-wait what he just Firaga'd my group for 800-1000 damage oh god everyone but monk Tiz is dead run away. :supaburn:"

My current party is:
Tiz - Monk/Thief, for occasional steals when Edea's busy/negative bp
Edea - Thief/White Mage. With that drat bow from the adventurer shop she's hitting 8 times for murder damage and I only just got to the water shrine for the first time. White Magic lets her do emergency help.
Agnes - Black Mage/Freelancer, pretty much just for examine which is a waste and should probably be on someone else, if anyone since it doesn't keep track of monster HP unless you ID'd them in that specific fight.
Ringabell - White Mage/Merchant. He has a Blessed Shield so healing comes easy and free, merchant is because an ablink friend on them gives access to Big Pharma, which I've probably abused far more than I should have.

Not sure who to change in to what. I might swap Tiz to a knight or fencer but I'm not really sure. Two-Handed with a Mithril Sword or Scimitar would probably do well but he's still putting out respectable damage and he's approaching rank 8 in monk.

Also, almost 19 hours played since Friday, Bravely Default is the most fun i've had with a video game in quite a long time.

My strategy for these was each party member Arcanist/Ninja with hermes sandals (bought from the equipment shop in Grandship) so they outspeed the dragon. Agnes was high level in the job as I'd been levelling it on her, the others were just levelled up to 3 to get Exterminate, which only took a few fights. Turn Tables and Comeback Kid on everyone, magic attack +10 and +20% on Agnes, the rest didn't really matter. I might have needed speed +10% on people too, I'm not sure. The fastest character had the Withering Ripple special attack set up to decrease poison resistance, and charged up on random battles before attacking the dragon. The second fastest had a poison rod equipped.

First turn everyone used Utsusemi, then I used the special and hit the dragon with the rod, inflicting poison. Then the rest of the fight was everyone casting Exterminate for massive damage and reapplying Utsusemi whenever needed. The breath attacks are physical and none of the dragons ever used brave, so Utsusemi made everyone invincible. Since you're dodging the attacks you never get hit with the statuses either.

The dark dragon is unfortunately immune to Exterminate, so for that one I made everyone ninja primary, put Transience on everyone and countered it to death, which took significantly longer than Exterminate spam :(

This was in chapter 4, my level was in the mid-50s.

Edit: this strategy may have been slightly influenced by which new job I'd got recently and how much I was enjoying it at the time

Just did the sidequest to fight the thief guy and have a couple Qs.

I keep seeing that I should lvl up my Freelancers. What makes them not useless? I had lvl 11 Tiz as a lvl 3 freelancer and his skills weren't helpful and he was doing an average of 1-3 damage. I've just switched it up to Tiz - White Mage, Agnes - Black Mage, Edea - Knight, Ringabel - Thief.

Also, is it useful to have a black mage AND a white mage on your team? Or should I just have one person with both skills and free up a slot?

One more, at what rate should I be switching up my jobs? Should I be switching them out all the time or once I find a team that works just focus on that build?

EDIT:
OH! And when I hit optimum for Tiz as a monk, it automatically puts on a pair of 2-handed gloves. But with a sword and a dagger the combined attacks add up to more than the gloves' attack. Is there a benefit to having a job specific weapon with lower attack? None of the other stats are effected.

EDIT EDIT:
Thanks.

Freelancers are jack-of-all-trades in a game where specialisation is really good, so they're kinda crap (at least until Late Bloomer becomes ridiculous and you start using Lore skills).

I would definitely use both a BM and WM, since they do entirely different things and they're both really good, especially early on.

I've stuck my characters in the same jobs for the most part (Tiz - Thief, Agnes - White Mage, Ringabel - Black Mage, Edea - Knight) but if you don't mind grinding a little then building up other jobs can be good for support skills or just to see if you enjoy them.

Also, dual wielding is not very good unless your class gives you stuff to make it better - I know a later class definitely does, but I don't think Monk has anything. The numbers might add up to more but generally a dual-wielded weapon like a bow or fist weapon will be better early on.

Two-handed comes along really quickly, as in 30 JP from the start quickly. It's a big boost to attack power.

Also, it seems very good early on to build casters as both White and Black mages. In either of the mage jobs, your MP and casting stats will be high, and you'll outlevel the available magic for sale pretty quickly if you just stay in one job.

After you make goon friends, especially if you're playing on Hard, I strongly suggest making use of the "Abilink" feature. It lets you get a preview of what's coming up in the various jobs without having to spoil yourself on a guide, and it helps ease the switch into new jobs instead of having to start at level one when some other goon's Tiz is already a Level 9 Thief or whatever. It's under the Tactics menu when you push X and there's quick tutorial about it.

You can put out the heads by hitting them with the other's element (which is their weakness anyway) and when the heads are out they'll only do single target bites. The heads relight on their individual turns so as long as you are putting them out you'll never have to deal with Blazzard, and they'll immediately do Hellfire and Deep Freeze on the first turn they can so you can reliably default it. My team going into CH2 was Tiz as Monk/Freelancer, Agnes as BLM/WHM, Ringabel as Thief/Monk, and Edea as Knight/Monk. After getting my rear end kicked quite a bit in the swamp area, I switched Tiz to Spell Fencer/Freelancer. It sucks at first (I'm finding out all jobs do at level 1 really), but if you stick with it, Spell Fencers poo poo out damage on enemies that have a weakness to magic, especially when you get to Florem and pick up level 3 Black Magic spells.

My team now (I'm assuming mid to late Ch2) is Tiz as Spell Fencer/Freelancer, Agnes as WHM/BLM (I switch her around to keep both jobs fairly equal in level), Ringabel as Ranger/Thief, and Edea as Knight/Spell Fencer. Ringabel is equipped with the Angelic Bow from Norende, does something like 700 to 900 damage a hit currently, Tiz and Edea both have scimitars and hit for around 500 to 600 per attack, unless Fira/Blizzara/Thundara is up (and then they hit for 800+ per hit, or if the enemy is weak to that type of magic, 1k+ per hit).

I'm playing on Hard mode, and currently bosses die in 2-3 turns if I have special attacks up.

Dual wielding penalty only seems to apply to physical damage. So yeah, equip your casters with two rods or two staves for stronger magic. I think shields early on are mostly useless, though with the last few skills Knights get, they can be awesome.

If you are just starting out, or thinking about getting the game, go through the demo first and transfer over to the game when you get it. Might want to add something the first post about the demo and transfer.

Also, there are a few glitches you can take advantage of with the demo. While i am not one to do that sort of thing, if you want to look them up on youtube. you could start with 20 villages with one by using the glitch.

Yes and nope. You'll get the town rolling about 4-6 days faster (since you can pull 3-5 villagers off the internet each day) but the better weapons follow a bit of an exponential price curve; by the time you can afford that 35K axe (though it'll still take a couple of dungeons worth of saving even then) it'll still be quite good but won't be one-shotting bosses.

Default while he has his shield up and wait for his big attack. Once he does it, unload with everything you've got. You can usually squeeze in two full four brave turns between everyone and still be able to default through his mega attack.
