There are plenty of good free e-readers on android that handle .mobi just fine. I used to use FBreader exclusively (and can still recommend it) but changed to Fabrik because it syncs my libraries automatically (if I put an ebook in my google drive* map on my pc it will download the ebook to my nexus 7 for offline use). Both support .mobi and .epub (and probably a lot of other stuff I never use).

*) it also supports dropbox

SIM-unlocked is unlocked. The Nexus 7 2013 supports the 700MHz LTE band Verizon uses, and the FCC requires Verizon to allow "open devices" to access that network and prevents them from blocking content and applications (like tethering) when on that network.

Unfortunately, Verizon hasn't update their device activation process to allow you to go to a store and request an activated LTE SIM card for your Nexus 7. The guides I've seen have suggested that when Verizon asks for the MEID/IMEI of your device, you give them the IMEI from one of the LTE tablets they have on display, like a Samsung Tab or something. Once you put the activated SIM in your Nexus 7, your account will be automatically updated to the IMEI of your Nexus 7 and it'll show up as Non-VZW Device.

I actually work at Verizon, and our store has some lte sim cards lying around. Thanks!

E: apparently it's that Verizon's database doesn't have the right imei in it.... welp

The problem is really that any stylus functionality is basically limited to the Samsung ecosystem - S Note, the Samsung keyboard, et cetera. Not to mention word processing and PDF editing sucks poo poo on Android regardless. (I have no idea what you plan on doing with it, but if it's word processing or PDF editing, a Windows tab will serve you much better.)

That's true, I have a Note 2 and I never use the pen, because I want don't want a Samsung account and the apps look a bit lame. I'd get the Tab, which is the same without the pen.

That said is word processing that bad? I do script writing on my Nexus 7,and it's not too bad. The keyboard is too small but Celtx is ok. Google Drive seems decent and I also have Quick Office.

I'd use it for all the usual stuff, like comics, music, videos etc but I'd also be a TEFL teacher so writing and creating things would be useful. But you think the Windows Tab would be better?

What's the best way to read .mobi files on the Nexus 7?

I tried making a "books" directory, but the Kindle app doesn't seem to pick up any of them, just books I purchased from the Kindle store.

kindle app and Calibre for your PC. Download the latest calibre, point it at all your .mobi files, download all the metadata and high res covers, then upload them via USB to your nexus. Works like awesome.

Sometimes you have to fuss with the settings on the nexus to get Calibre to see it from the PC.

The kindle app may not be the best, and it is kinda garbage for organization, but since half my stuff is legit bought off amazon, and half is not, I just end up pouring it all into the kindle reader app.

Calibre is really the best, I was about to post that you should download it. If you wanted to go Google Books for all your tablet reading, you could also use Calibre to convert all the .mobi to .epub. I use it both ways quite a lot, converting stuff to .mobi for my kindle, and .epub for Google Books (which is my preferred reader on Tablets/Phones) so I can keep things synced up.

There is also an addon script available for Calibre that strips Amazon DRM from e-books. My e-book library were all legit purchased from Amazon but my eReader is a Sony PRS which prefers epub.

My official Nexus 7 sleeve arrived today. I don't like cases, but still wanted something that will let me throw it in a bag and not worry about it. The sleeve does the job perfectly. There's a little extra room and it could fit the 2012 version or you could put some other stuff in there as long as it's flat (boarding pass, microfiber cloth). There's also a pocket in the back for earbuds or whatever. The pocket is large enough to hold a Nexus 5 with room to spare. The whole thing looks and feels well-made and if I were going to make a complaint it would be that the pocket is too deep and it could be difficult to get something out of it if it's jammed all the way at the bottom. I was unable to wirelessly charge through the sleeve, but that's not really what it's for.

Looking at the official sleeves/cases: not to live up to the stereotype of the thread title, but has anyone got the official case? The photos on the site aren't overly conclusive, does it have a little holster for a stylus?

Digitimes reporting that a Nexus 8 is in the works

http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20140207PD201.html

quote:

Google to launch 8-inch Nexus tablet
Monica Chen, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Friday 7 February 2014]
Google has been developing an 8-inch tablet to avoid price competition in the 7-inch segment for launch at the end of April with initial shipments of two million units, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers.

Google cooperated with Asustek Computer to develop 7-inch tablets which launched under a co-brand arrangement in June 2012 and July 2013.

However, sales performance for the second-generation Nexus 7 have been short of expectations mainly due to intense price competition in the 7-inch segment, with cumulative sales of fewer than three million units as of the end of 2013, the sources noted.

Therefore, Google has selected 8-inch as the size of the third-generation Nexus 7 to avoid price competition and competition from 5- to 6-inch smartphones, the sources indicated. Google is very likely to continue co-brand cooperation with Asustek for the 8-inch tablet, the sources added.

I thought DigiTimes and International Business Times were pretty horrible "sources" for actual new technology news.

Someone linked to IBTimes claiming that Lenovo/Motorola would make the "Nexus 6" in the Android Phone thread. I read the article twice and it really didn't say anything but "Lenovo will make the Nexus 6" and gave no proof or explanation as to why it said it.

Also, I don't see any real sources on this "Nexus 8" story either. It's just parroting what Android fan-blogs were claiming last year when someone saw a tablet that LOOKED 8 inches and then the blog world exploded claiming it was coming.

Basically, don't trust the article and just go buy a Nexus 7 2013. At least that's real and we know 100% that it exists.

Though, I personally don't think the Nexus 10 exists because I have never seen anyone use use one and have never seen it being sold or displayed in any of the seven states I've been through in the past two years. :v:

If you really want an 8" tablet the G Pad looks promising. This is pretty much what I'd expect from an 8" nexus, down even to the lack of an sd card.

They're the loving worst. My Google Now news section always has articles from them, even though I just swipe them away and never read them. Then you have other "news sources" that quote them and trying to find any real news in that mess is like wading through garbage. There used to be a way on Google search to to hide results from certain sites but it's gone now.

Speaking of news and rumors, is there any word of anything with a screen to rival the N10's coming out anytime soon? The N10 is ugly as sin and lack of removable storage is dumb as h*ck. Mostly I don't wanna spend 350-400 on a late 2012 device...

The ASUS MeMO 10 FHD looks radical but I am debating whether I should get that or wait on something better with a nicer screen

Couple of general questions though: How well do white devices wear compared to black? And is the S pen likely to work with it, if it doesn't come with one?
