Week 2 of league thoughts: "gently caress defense dice, attack die fo lyfe muthafuckas." I built this stupid little list to trump someone by having Roark make a pilot PS 12, and then have that pilot with Swarm Tactics also go on 12. It faced a weenie spam list, so it shot first anyways. :/ Man, even using the HWK in a couple of ways, I still can't abide by it. It just seems so fragile, and I'd rather pack in the B-Wing and just ram attack dice up someone's butthole until the whisper "Crit," and fall over dead.

Feeple posted:"gently caress defense dice, attack die fo lyfe muthafuckas." This is pretty much the mantra of the game. With a focus, the attack die has a better chance of hitting than a defense die with a focus. It's highlighted in the comparison between the X-Wing and the TIE Advanced, same points, same shields but with attack and defense flipped. One of them is a very solid ship, the other is only really viable for Vader and gimmick builds.

I've been thinking about uglies.... Has anyone tried cutting up, say, an X-wing and a TIE to create an X-TIE, or done any other uglies? At some point I'd be willing to take a whack at that, but I'm wondering how easy these are to cut apart and turn into frankenfighters.

I'm thinking about chopping up my defective X-wing and putting it back together straight and with the s-foils closed. It seems possible but the wings would definitely need to be cut precisely.

Just finished my first game (not against my roomate) on Vassal. The interface took a little getting used to, but by the end I had it down. A brief AAR: Me: Howlrunner + Swarm Tactics, Mauler Mithel+ Marksmanship, 5x Academy Pilots Rinehart (random guy on Vassal): Luke Skywalker + R2-D2 + Shield Upgrade, Dutch Vander + R5-D8 + Ion Cannon Turret + Proton Torpedoes, Kyle Katarn + Recon Specialist + Ion Cannon Turret Right off the bat, Rinehart observed that his squad wasn't going to do too well against a swarm. I also noticed that his Y-Wing was rather expensive. By the end of turn 3, I'd traded 1 Academy pilot for Dutch. I also spent lots of time flying into my own ships. By the end of turn 6, I'd traded another Academy Pilot (and two hits on two more) for Kyle. I wanted to focus Luke down first, but the HWK is pretty easy to keep in your sights, and I kept flying into my own ships. Two turns later, I'd traded one of my critically wounded TIEs for Luke. I feel like the victory would have been even bigger with a few more evasions and focuses, and towards the end I was getting better with the movement arcs - I even managed to block Luke from a K-turn when I knew he was going to try one. The HWK seems like a huge waste of points in a 100pt game. The biggest downside I found with the TIEs was no '1 forward' on the dial. Even if it were red, that was something I really wanted a couple times. Also, I'm very disappointed we're getting a TIE Phantom (what is that even from?) and not an assault gunboat in the next wave.

TIE Phantom is from Rebel Assault 2, one of the best worst FMV star wars games that the 90s had to offer.

I loved Rebel Assault II, although I think nostalgia might have more to do with that now.

Every single 90s Star Wars videogame fan should have encountered the hell that was the A-Wing crystal-flying level on the original Rebel Assault. I still feel like I really accomplished something when I beat that level.

Luke Skywalker's gimmick is unkillable Zombie, Dutch Vander is great for passing off target locks and Kyle is arguably okay at supporting high damage ships. What it needs is a Wedge, Tycho or Horton Salm, and all those upgrades Maybe I am biased because I play Imperials most of the time so I run around with Pilot talents as opposed to ship upgrades but surely you don't need ALL of them.

What does everyone think about the point pricing on the Defender? If it was 27 or 28 points for the cheapest, I would consider buying 3, but at 30 for the cheapest I just can't think of any reason I'd want to fly only the 3 of them in a list. I guess I'm only going to get 2 unless that "hidden maneuver" is game-breaking. Also, just thinking about your vassal game makes my head hurt. That guy ran a terrible list. If he wanted to run something with those ships I'm thinking - Luke Skywalker — X-Wing 28 Expert Handling 2 - Rookie Pilot — X-Wing 21 - "Dutch" Vander — Y-Wing 23 Ion Cannon Turret 5 - Rebel Operative — HWK-290 16 Ion Cannon Turret 5 Still gives him 2 ion platforms, Dutch, and a hard to kill Luke, but it trades all of his terrible upgrades for another X-Wing. Still not sure it can beat a swarm, but at least it might have a chance.

So in my ~3 weeks on Vassal, I've run into more than a few guys who are running suboptimal or oddball lists for fun, or in the case of one guy I played against, he's got a YouTube channel and he'll play whatever the subscribers vote for- hence him running Maarek Stele and 2 Storm Squadron pilots against me the other night. Seems to me like the Vassal tournament scene is such that games are either somebody preparing for a tournament with a serious list, or people screwing around.

Looking at Imperial Aces, they may (if they release a corresponding Rebel expansion) try and duplicate upgrades across factions.

I wonder what they'd put out for a bonus Rebel pack like that...I hope not X-Wings, since one of those is coming with the Transport and (I think) the Tantive. Maybe a green flight A-Wing bundled with a grey flight Y-Wing? That would give an excuse to put lots of different upgrade cards in there.

And then you could have Davish Krail, who could inherit one stress token off a friendly ship at range 1-2, to a limit of 3 :nignog:

I think A- and Y-Wings make sense as they are thought of as less competitive than X- and B-Wings. FFG HAS a real interest in making sure ships are viable. Perhaps I'm being too generous, but it seems like they're really paying attention to the community and responding to balance concerns.

I'd do it 50/50/50 vs 75/75 at most. It's already going to take a while for 5 people to take turns and template out moves, so you don't want them to have a ton of ships to move around.

Mr.Trifecta posted:I am the only one experienced that has played the game. If you are teaching the game, don't play. It's much better for you to oversee/advise/referee, you will be doing it anyway and trying to play your turn as well just adds to the confusion. For a first game with 2 a side, 20-30 points per player is plenty, having to manage synergies between ships and plan 3 or 4 manouvers is just too much for someone who is still learning what all the symbols on the dice mean. You should absolutely pick and set the lists and keep them simple. Once people know how to zoom ships about and shoot lasers at eachother you can move on to list picking and there is plenty of time to add in more complicated upgrades.

I wiped my roommate's 5 ties and 1 interceptor with this build 98/100 Jan Ors with squad leader + chewie - 31 Biggs with r2d2 and a shield upgade - 33 Ibtisam with advanced sensors and marksmanship - 34 Using the HWK to give an additional attack die as well as a free action to the b wing was devastating. In one movement phase the b wing could target lock, k turn, and receive marksmanship. Also Ibtisam can re-roll attack and defense die when under stress. You can end up rolling 5 dice with marksmanship which pretty much guarantees whatever cocksucker you're pointed at is going down in a single attack phase. Big fuckers like the firespray go down in 2 attack phases. And if you fly right, no once can even target him until Biggs goes down. Irom fucked around with this message at 08:46 on Feb 18, 2014 |

On that note, I was convinced Krassis Trelix was a female character. Not entirely sure why. Had another game over the weekend, 100 points a side, this time we played with a time limit to save the 3 hours shenanigans from our previous game. I'm glad to say first blood was spilt in 15 minutes, a TIE fighter going down to a sustained assault from Chewie and a rookie X-wing pilot. That TIE and its counterpart managed to strip down the shields on my opponents A-wing though, quite fortuitous but I wouldn't realise that yet.. Darth Vader started off to the side and took a few turns to get into the fight, when he eventually did, he was facing off with the now shield-less A-wing and the only thing to do was target lock it and fling off cluster missiles at it, just to be on the safe side... pop goes the A-wing Anyway, our 1 hour time limit came up with just Darth Vader and Krassis Trelix scampering around versus Chewie and the (man of the match) rookie X-wing pilot, I scraped the victory on points but only just. Playing with a time limit helped massively I think, I actually got home at a vaguely sensible time

We played a massive game for league last night. 3v3v1, 100 points per side. The extra v1 was a buddy joining in as we just were getting started. So, to make things fun, he took 2x firesprays, and played as pirates. He deployed in turn 2, and his kills were worth 1.5 their points cost. Lots of fun.

Got two games in yesterday with my HLC Bounty Hunter, PtL Soontir Fel, 2x Academy TIE squad against a guy trying to run a 3-ship list with PtL/Boost Ibtisam, Ion Dutch Vander, and an alternating third. The first match he ran Garven Dreis and we traded a TIE Fighter for Dreis with the opening volley and things went pretty quickly in my favor after that. The second match he tried subbing in a HLC Blue Squadron B-Wing, but didn't give him Advanced Sensors for some reason. That match lasted a little longer, but I was able to focus fire his Y-Wing down, tarpit Ibtisam with TIE Fighters flying right in his path, and wear him down in a few more rounds. I think I lost a single TIE Fighter again, but that's what they're there for. The biggest lesson I learned is that 3-ship elite Rebel lists just don't seem like a good idea unless one of those ships is a Falcon and that you should always take Advanced Sensors on your B-Wing.
