I'm glad they haven't done it since then but I loved the moment in the pilot where he just spaces out completely and lets a massive strand of drool drop almost to the floor.

I wonder how much of that frankly insane viewer growth is attributable to putting the show up on Youtube. Because I know a ton of people who's first exposure to the show was some random episode they caught on Youtube. Hell, mine was, and I went back and bought the first three because I liked it so much. I also wonder how big the episode order is gonna be.

I think 24 would be basically unprecedented for an AS show, right? I mean, this seems to be their biggest hit in a while, but I'd guess lower than that.

That said, AS is somewhat responsible for Space Dandy getting 24 episodes. They partially bankrolled the second season (which is why the show premieres in the United States first.)

Adult Swim completely bankrolled the second season of Big O, didn't they? And that was back when Adult Swim wasn't the behemoth it is today.

I wonder what Venture Brothers ratings would be like in the same slot. I think I checked out Rick and Morty on youtube after it got praise in the Archer thread and I really, really like it. What are the budgets like on AS shows like ATHF, Squidbillies, VBros and Rick and Morty, and CN shows like Regular Show and Adventure Time? I always wonder how ATHF keeps trucking along without a question as to whether it will be back or not whereas VBros and Rick and Morty are on the fence as to whether they will get another season. I love all those shows by the way.

Of the shows you listed Venture Bros is probably the most expensive on an episode to episode basis. Metalocalypse is another show that was probably somewhat expensive. They're produced by other studios, that probably costs more than their in-house offerings.

It blows my mind that ATHF (or whatever they are calling it these days) is still on TV. That show is so dumb and so bizarre, yet consistently funny. I can watch pretty much any episode of that show and be entertained, but I can't remember the last time I actually tuned in to watch it.

At all. They can literally make the episode about anything and it only has to sustain it's insanity for 10 minutes at a time.

JT Jag posted:ATHF is a a legacy show that has been around since before Adult Swim even existed. It's also probably really cheap to produce. Squidbillies is also pretty inexpensive, I'd expect. Both are actually made in-house by Williams Street, which keeps costs down. I don't know how expensive Venture Bros can be, seeing as its basically just Doc and Jackson doing almost everything themselves.

JT Jag posted:Some are more expensive then others. Depends on how they're made and how big their staffs are. I'd be curious to see how much something like Archer costs to make vs something more traditional like American Dad. Given how long they take I'm surprised we haven't found out that they animate the Venture Bros. by dragging old WB, Disney, and Hanna Barbera animators out of retirement to draw each cel by hand using ink made from unicorns and Walt Disney's ashes.

You really think Archer wouldn't be expensive at all since part of the charm is that it looks cheap as hell. I mean if you can't get the synergy on those two points right... well at least it's a hit, so I guess they lucked out.

I dunno, Archer looks expensive to me. I dunno what animated shows you've been watching but Archer seems to have a lot more shading and background detail than I usually see. It also has a big-ish cast of not-no-name people.

Metropolis posted:I dunno, Archer looks expensive to me. I dunno what animated shows you've been watching but Archer seems to have a lot more shading and background detail than I usually see. Background detail doesn't really amount to much when its always static like some matte painting behind the marionettes moving limb by limb in front of it. Anytime they have to animate a lot of motion like a car chase it always ends up looking out of place cause they have to break the style and use flash or whatever. Archer being expensive surprises the hell out of me.

My buddy just sent me this little piece. It was all done on a loving phone app. I think it's badass, personally. I saw him draw the initial sketch, and slowly add more and more until he sent me that. I want to try and teach him how to use Flash now.
