Is there a single (good) manga about European history that isn't Farmland saga. Thanks in advance.

Mercenary Pierre has an awful start and premise (He tries to rape Joan of Arc but decides to help her because he wants to take her virginity), but it's about a mercenary in the Hundred Years War and has some really lavish battles.

I didn't finish it though.

People who die in this manga are very clearly and explicitly killed. Heki even got shot in the damned neck and came back a few panels later. Mouten is fine because manga.

I just started reading vinland saga. I am so angry! I got all caught up in Askelad's adventure to guard the prince that I forgot they were all rear end in a top hat vikings who kill innocent people and now I'm mad at the author for making me root for a bunch of bad guys.

Well I'm not that mad, I just feel weird because I was really rooting for Askelad and now I feel bad.

Don't worry. Askelaad doesn't care for vikings much either.

More awesome chapters of Kingdom. I'm really spoiled by the update rate, it's crazy and seriously accentuates the entertainment factor for me.
Pretty cool new chapters too...My friend made the mistake of reminding me of the existence of Hou Ken though, god I hope that ridiculous DBZ character doesn't ever show up again. Especially given Riboku making some crazy move in the new chapters. I'd been hoping Hou Ken would disappear into the mountains forever but I seem to remember last we saw him he'd agreed to help when Kei Sha asked him, implying he's a confirmed permanent part of Riboku's arsenal now. I can't believe he actually ever existed, I remember it felt like he belonged in another series entirely (even with the Mountain Tribes and sword-dance Naruto ninja, he was an unbearable degree of bullshit).
Kingdom is over the top and ridiculous but I really hate the occasional pure-fantasy magic stuff like "Bushin" and "breath" that sneaks in. Some guy capable of solo-ing an entire army really kills the awesomeness and tension of generalship and dramatic battle maneuvers that forms the core of Kingdom's appeal, even the craziest most powerful generals never got as stupid as Hou Ken.

I don't like Hou Ken either. I really liked the duel that just happened, even if it was just two dudes hitting each other progressively harder with clubs, because I felt like somebody was actually going to win. Whenever Hou Ken shows up all he does is delay the conclusion for like 10 issues.

Few more Kingdom chapters up.

Although the "I have you!" "No, it is I who have YOU!" exchanges can get a bit tedious, it's worth it for the last chapter.

That's all well and good. The part that ruins the setting of the manga is the Chi/Breath bullshit that he brings with him. TheFallenEvincar put more effort into explaining it than I will. If you're familiar with Shamo, you'd know why it's a giant poo poo in an otherwise fantastic manga.

Hou Ken is going to win every time, until Shin powers up enough (and loses once), so he's a super boring character until he dies a chapter-long death.

The rest of the Alliance arc is all gold. I wish they went further into depth about the different armies and their dumb gimmicks.

How much better would it honestly be if Ri Boku were the one to have killed Duke Hyou, rather than some DBZ crossover character. It'd also create more direct personal bitterness and vengeance between Shin and Ri Boku (and create an inner dilemma and maybe hesitation within Ri Boku in future clashes? He did have that internal thought of not wanting to be forced to "kill a child"). I remember it was hinted at that he was as much of a deadly warrior as he was a master tactician, better to have him directly kill a general as awesome and powerful as Duke Hyou or kill him with some clever sneaky battle tactic.
To make Naruto analogies, Hou Ken is basically our Sasuke, consistently defeating and maiming far more interesting and compelling characters than himself.

I'm not certain how closely the author of Kingdom is going to stick to the character's historical counterparts, but Riboku (Li Mu) was taken down politically rather than militarily, and probably a good bit later, as this is most likely the 5 states armies attacking Qin in 241 BCE. Given that, he's not really Shin's enemy to defeat. This is likely why Houken was added to be the physical wall for Shin to overcome. That said, I don't really get this whole DBZ reject thing.

Ouki was just as big and fought just as hard as Houken. Same with Renpa. And Moubu. And Hyou. These men are all shown as idiotically strong, really no different from Houken. Houken is basically just a really strong crazy guy dedicated to proving that he is the strongest and craziest of all. The only reason he's on the battlefield in the first place is because he lost to Ouki (even though Ouki died, it wasn't because Houken dominated him, but an arrow to the back). He's trying to find out why Ouki could summon that last burst of strength to bring his glaive down onto his neck despite the big hole he'd put through Ouki's chest. Now Hyou has done the same thing, then got Houken's arm. The idea is to reinforce that it's not simply martial prowess that makes a great general, with Houken serving as the example of what is wrong with just being a really tough guy.

Also, on the whole Chi/Breath thing. It's not like Houken or Kai were even the first examples of that in the manga. Kai's breath thing is basically self hypnosis, and Houken's "I find the toughest dudes" thing has been done before. Besides, Houken might just wander from fire glow to fire glow, kicking the poo poo out of everyone and giving that whole "You summoned me here" speech to guy to block a blow. He is a crazy loner hermit obsessed with being the strongest thing in the world after all.

It kinda makes sense to be uneventful, Pierre would either end as a guy forever on the battlefield, a corpse or a family man. It's straight fare for most of the military/mercenary commanders who became famous on the 100 year War (except for Gilles de Rais who became a old gods cultist pedophile murderer). Great series still, wish there were more by the author.

In 1985 Dr. Strange makes a rap album.
So I went and binged through all of Gisele Alain and really enjoyed what's available with the exception of one thing. The art is great, the characters are enjoyable (Henri, the naval architect introduced in the most recently translated chapter, is great especially), and the whole thing is just really light and relaxing.

That being said, for the part I don't like, I REALLY hope there's swerve and author just sets Gisele up with Lucas or maybe nobody given that, you know, Eric's an adult and she's 13 which just makes him a huge creep.
