Hopefully I'm joining the club soon! I'm going to look at a '99 10AE this weekend. It looks to be in fantastic condition, and it only has 80,0000 km on it. I just talked to the current owner, and he sounded 70, which is a good sign. MX-5s are pretty expensive here in Australia compared to the US, so he's asking $11.5k, but it's within my budget, and looks almost new.

One of the hoses under the intake manifold is leaking. I have loving huge hands, I wonder if it'd be worth it to just pull the loving intake manifold. Could I get away with just removing the alternator and the throttle body? This is on an NA 1.8

Coolant? Fuel? You can take off the top half of the intake with no real issue.

I usually yell at people for asking instead of google'ing something- are NA/NC catbacks interchangeable?

My buddy has a 1.8 block on a stand in his garage that he's been building for the past year, and I got a good look at it. I don't know which one is leaking, but I'm losing about half the reservoir each day. I just ordered all the pain-in-the-rear end hoses and a set of remote spring clamp pliers to minimize blood loss.

Aaaaand now I own one. It's a bone stock 10th Anniversary Edition (so 6 speed, Bilstein suspension & LSD) with 83,000 KM. It is so so so much fun to drive. I got sunburned driving it around nowhere in particular yesterday. I'm 6'2", so I was worried I wouldn't fit in it, but it's fine. The top of my hair brushes the top while it's up, and I took the sun visors out, and now it's like a glove. I'm half thinking of doing a foamectomy, but it's in such good condition I'm not sure I want to hack in to it. The wheels look pretty tacky, but at least they're stock. The interior also looks pretty silly in photos, but it's a pretty deep blue in real life. The interior is like new. Turns out I'm a fan of blue Mazdas.

THe 10AE looks awesome! Do you really think the wheels are tacky? They look good to me... Taking the sun visors out is a great idea. I'm going to try that, I'm around 6' too. With the sunvisors down I can see maybe 10 feet ahead of the nose, why not take them out!

My Protege5 had the "chrome" alloys and I didn't like them at all, way too flashy. Hairynipple, I'd just buy a nice set of aftermarket wheels and save the originals in case you ever sell the car because it will be worth more with the original wheels.

Taking them out means I can see an extra 1 or 2 cm at the top of the window. It's the difference between having to bend my head down a little, and not at all. Much more comfortable. I've seen there's little blanking plates you can put in there, but I just took the actual visor out and left the mounting plastic in there. Does anyone in the thread have any experience with UK based restoration places? Am I insane for even considering this for a mk1 mx5 rather then just selling it cheap and buying another in a good condition? on a recent drive home the rear shocks have just gone and the drive belt squeals like a pig when the alternator is in use, and to top it off the car seriously bogged down on me pulling from a traffic light when I was near home. The rear subframe and all the rear suspension components are rusty It looks pretty bad but none of it is rotten through. The rear wheel arches and sills were bodge fixed with filler by the previous owner. There's oil and rust in the engine bay some of the bolts in the engine bay have orange rust rings around them. I love the car so much I just want to say gently caress it get it fixed up good and proper but I only have a limit of £3000 to spend on potential repairs and the thought of doing that instead of selling it dirt dirt cheap makes me feel like I want to vomit and am being insane. farcry fucked around with this message at 08:29 on Feb 9, 2014 |

There are MX5 specialists dotted around; I know some of the north/east/midlands ones. Also, £3000 will buy you an absolutely A-1 pristine MX5 at this time of year...

I'm in the east midlands near Nottingham. After some thought I think I might just replace the rear shocks sort out whatever it is that's causing the alternator belt to slip and sell it cheap after my years insurance is up, I don't need a car I just bought it for enjoyment and the interesting and fun aspect of doing work on a car myself. I have enjoyed that aspect of it so far till now sorting out the battery, HT leads, cig lighter, lights, window issues new rotors and callipers etc. Its been great for me motivationally and mentally in other aspects of my life too but the stress of everything personal with this right now is too much and I need to take a huge step back from everything.

God damnit! Of course when I'm trying to sell my Miata I break something. I hit a massive string of potholes a few days ago and now my shifter moves up and down an inch or two whenever I accel/decel. I got under the car and couldn't see anything obvious so I took it to a mazda dealer and my power plant frame (ppf) or the transmission/diff support brace was compeltely cracked in half. Whoever installed my new exhaust had cut in to the support brace to mount it. I hit a pothole and the small cut turned in to a complete slice. Not good. I ended up biting the bullet and putting snow tires on my main car while I sort out the Miata. The dealer quoted me at ~700 for the part and claimed it was the last one in the country. I just bought one off of ebay for $62 shipped! Hopefully I can slap it on myself and it should be good as new.

Yeah it was terrible - just angle grinded a big cut in it just so a tiny piece of the exhaust mount could clear it. Why on earth he didn't just cut the piece of exhaust is beyond me. I wish I had taken a picture of it while it was on the lift!

Well now is a great time to swap out the diff and/or diff bushings since you're dropping the PPF. If you haven't done a clutch on the car, it'd be a good idea. If you have access to Mazdaspeed you can get the kit for $100ish, otherwise it'll be closer to $130 via Rosenthal.

I was originally planning to turbo or v8 swap this one, but it needs a decent amount of body work to be perfect and I wanted to start with a nice clean platform before I do any performance mods. I really love this car a whole bunch and it's hilarious fun, but I just don't have the time anymore to work on it. Comedy AI lemons/chump car option. Who wants to go in on a roll cage??

Miata Goons, help me; you're my only hope! A friend of a friend is moving. He needs to ditch his '99 Miata. It has 114K miles. He says it has a gasoline smell which won't go away and the roof has holes. It will need a new clutch, new brake pads, and new shocks soon (normal wear and tear stuff). Otherwise it has given him no problems. The gasoline smells worrys me some. Any one have any idea what this could be? Basically if the price is right, would you feel comfortable with this car or should I pass.

Welp I sold the Miata to a mechanic who wants to turn it into an Exocet. I'll miss it, and I'll definitely own some form of Miata/MX5 in the future! Maybe once my fiesta st lease is up I'll snag the 2015? ND alfa romeo miata thing, or at least another NA.

Has anyone dealt with power windows, I'm starting to get pissed because I have done everything short of replacing the motors. I installed a teflon guide kit and re-greased the regulators so it's not binding up. I cleaned the contacts on the switch AGAIN and it didn't seem to help that much, do I just need to get a new switch? I remember some people saying that eventually you just have to buy a new switch because cleaning it over and over just stops working, and then I have read about people "rebuilding" the contacts with solder and having good results. gently caress these power windows, I'm on the verge of converting to manual crank windows.

The passenger window is being buggy on mine. Goes down fine but it won't go up unless I start the driver's side one at the same time. Hoping it's just the cold.

Re: windows I guess there's a common problem where a guide wire gets caught and keeps the window from rolling down. Mine goes down about four inches then stops. It actaully started working right again for awhile until I got pulled over* and the window suddenly didn't roll down again. Now that the weather will be nice in a month or so I want to fix this. *Cop was a complete dick about it, too. I explained my window didn't roll down and he got all snarky asking if my door opened. Yeah, dogg, it does, I just didn't want to have a gun drawn on me is all.
