I'm just a nonconformist  But really, it's just how I'm used to seeing my music organized. It's how my iTunes is organized (obviously easily swappable), it's how every shop I use organizes the tracks (i.e. beatport). I'm well aware that most people do artist - track. I understand it, I don't really think it matters either way and stick with what I'm comfortable with. As a very minor aside, when I'm reading a tracklist in my head I want to read it as "<track> by <artist>" versus something weird like.. "<artist>'s song <track>"..? At the end of the day, all that really matters to me is the information is there.

Can someone give me feedback on this 45-min mix? I was on vacation for 3 weeks, and this is my first practice since: https://x.mixcloud.com/alfaj0r/back-at-it-2014/ Asking my wife for feedback is similar to her asking me if a dress makes her look fat. I know there's at least one poor transition, but I really would like to know if it's a trainwreck or not. Also: I thought it might be interesting to have a consensus on how to provide feedback. When I listen, I've been paying attention to not only how technically correct a transition is, but also thinking about stuff like emotional energy and flow, but I'm not sure how to put it all into words.

If the mix works, it works. If you vibe to it, it works. There are some really good DJs who are terrible at beatmatching / who don't try to beatmatch at all, and there are some really bad DJs who are like robots at beatmatching. When you listen for yourself to your own mix, just worry more about the vibe than anything else. You'll improve on beatmatching with time, but good beatmatching won't save a bad track selection.

I have a measure I call TQ ("Trainwreck Quotient") but it basically falls in line with what a milk crime said - it's not really about anything specific, but rather I determine the TQ of a mix by how many times I put my face in my hands while listening back to it a couple days later. It's a good mix for me if it has an average TQ/hr of 2; below that, I'm jumping up and down with glee.

Heh, while I agree, I think that 2 bad transitions is forgiveable, but a trainwreck is something that is so bad that it just kills all the vibe and is basically unrecoverable. Listening to things myself, it's hard to know exactly where that line is drawn in the grey area. There's a lot of room between "Barely noticeable" and "wow, stop that noise", and it's hard for me to know on my own mixes. In other words, trying to get feedback on how to tell if it's cringe but get through it, or more like

While it's of course best to get someone else to listen to it and tell you, listening back to the recording after a significant amount of time has passed helps give some distance from the artist's seat. I also like to do things like listen to it in the car, where my attention is focused on something else (driving) and if anything sticks out to me in that state I know it's at least jarring enough to break through my concentration when I'm not actively listening and thus "worse" than something where I simply know what I wanted to happen and can hear how it isn't that. Sometimes I listen to a mix a couple weeks later and I can't hear parts that I felt bad about a day later (or while playing); even more interesting is when something I thought I trainwrecked turns out to grow on me and actually sounds really good once I get over the feelings of "But it's not exactly what I wanted to happen!"

burn(dream) - Fashionably Late This is my 2013 year-mix (fashionably late, as the title implies). I decided to make this using Ableton for two reasons - first, I can't mix this fast live yet, so I thought it would be easier to do in a DAW; second, I needed a way to get something like a crash course in Ableton. Well, I don't know about "easier" - it certainly wasn't as easy as "just like a live mix, but with the ability to go back and correct mistakes" like I thought. I probably put 20+ hours into this, which is probably longer than it would have taken me to perfect a live version. But it was a lot of fun and very useful to learn all kinds of editing shortcuts. A few years ago I really wanted to try my hand at DJing. Listening to DJ mixes is what got me into making my own music in the first place and I figured the progression was natural. I had gotten all lined up with a Novation Twitch and a copy of Traktor to give things a go, but simply put, I didn't have any fun with it. The Twitch was kind of more controller than a newbie needed, I really disliked working in Traktor, my music selection could use some depth, and the mixes I came out with didn't sound all that great. Long story short, I got the itch again recently and purchased a Mixtrack Pro II. It's a very snazzy and straightforward controller that I'm very happy with. In January, we held the fourth annual "Slow Your Roll" party that I did with my buddy Little Mike. The theme is we keep the music under 115 BPM the whole evening. Well, he took the recording back with him to Berlin and then went on vacation for a few weeks so I only have just gotten my hands on it. 3+ hours of slo-mo goodness.
