Either way with Ajin, which I might just continue following in the near future just to see how things shake out, I think we have a much better similar sort of story unfolding with Tokyo Ghoul (character is a special "other" who is being hunted down by the government and is now unwillingly thrust into the world of these non-human beings).

:psyduck: You weren't kidding when you said they completely changed Nagai's character. It's frustrating because they could have totally made that work if they stretched it out over a longer period of time with him being more and more calloused but goddamn that was an awful execution... Also, no you can't loving have the character be all sympathetic and wanting to help people then bandage it as "no you see he was always selfish and doing those things throughout his life simply for himself!" out of the blue like that.

Thanks , I'll check that out. I never got into the anime but the premise seems better suited to a novel format.

I think the manga is probably the best format for this story. The LN is pretty good, but I think it falls down a bit when it gets more action heavy and that might work better in the manga. Also I think the opening is a lot stronger than the resolution, I wouldn't say it does anything bad.. but it gets less engaging as it loses its sense of mystery.

It might just be my pessimism speaking but I'm apprehensive about the movie, it COULD be good but also it could completely miss the point and fail.

I didn't realize LNs were THAT light though, you can comfortably digest the whole thing in just a couple of hours. Is that normal for LNs or was this one lighter than most?

Started reading the manga, which feels weird since it's the first time I've read a book-to-comic adaptation. I really like the design of the suits and the aliens, but Rita is way, way too cutesy. Gotta appease the demography for this stuff, I guess.

Exactly! It's infuriating! They took the first part of the story and completely dumped it. Even if they actually switch main characters to the new bleached blond dude, and ??? somehow got rid of Nagai, who is completely loving irredeemable now, it is still going to suck. When your best option is to completely switch Main Characters to a brand new character that has had nothing revealed about them, it seems like you would be better off just packing poo poo up and starting a new series.

I'm reading Kaiji, and it actually has some really good commentary on freedom of choice, particularly with regards to economic issues. That might sound like a silly thing to say about a manga about gambling, but it's true. A big point the author seems to push is that the decisions people make under stress - whether physical or economic - do not necessarily reflect some abstract "truth" and are instead the result of said stress/coercion. It's refreshing to see, given the emphasis most of society/the media tends to put on the freedom people have and control they have over their own lives.

Really the best loving idea they came up with for Ajin are loving crash test dummies, and guinea pigs for new drugs? The government is using immortal beings for crash test dummies :wtc:

Nagai went from being "i care about people" to "i dont give a poo poo about anyone" in the span of one chapter?

Also so they seal all the Ajin who are not going to be part of the mass killings in drums? But uhhh, cant they just summon/turn into black smoke monsters and cut the way out of a drum?

Nope apparently black ghosts the mummies fail at cutting through thin pieces of metal, despite being able to cleave bodies in half take out chunks of walls etc. And apparently they can't be ordered to like uh... take off the loving lid like a normal human being. I love Nagai locking up the soon-to-be-new MC because it clearly is not going to succeed. Also "Oh however will I ask forgiveness from Kei if I hurt someone" ==> well found this reasonable guy who wants to talk things through, better lock him in a prison because I cannot envision any other way through this problem.

It's so dumb. Can't decide whether I want to see where the dumb leads or just ditch this bullshit.

But wasnt the black ghost making those massive claw marks in the plexi glass window? Ether way i don't know, i hate all the characters with the sole exception of the dude with the hat. The manga had a neat concept but the torture gore part completely turned me off.

Ended up binging this, pretty interesting although it took a while for it to get going. However if he forgives the chef guy I don't think I could continue with it. Kid is way too gullible even for an anime character, especially for one that's supposed to be 18! Which speaking of he looks way too young in my opinion.

Are there any other good manga about someone being sort of tossed into the "bad guy" role/side? Modern is a plus.

Akame ga Kill is good for having a fun core cast and good shonen battles and not much else. The actual core plot is a steaming pile of dung, even if I do like the side plots like Esdese's weird schoolgirl crush or the JUSTICE girl getting more and more crazy every time anything happens around her.

I'm looking forward to the anime though, it's got White Fox on it.

The only thing that has changed is that the new batch of one-dimensional villains are more blatant with their atrocities. Neither the scope nor the degree of their comically evil deeds surpasses the crap from earlier in the manga. I guess that is probably intentional, as the PM's son lacks even the tiny amount of subtlety and guile the PM has.

Every time they played up the humanity of the previous group of bad guys I ended up laughing my rear end off. Guy burns down towns for a living, but is a loving family man, so it's not so bad. Chick kills entire nations for kicks, but likes the MC ~sukiiii~. I still read it, but more for the unintentional hilarity than anything else.

Can't you guys just...wait until it gets low enough (since the ceiling is slowly going down) and get on the chair one by one and climb up into the next level? :downs: I guess maybe not everyone could climb out in time, but still...

"I didn't see the part where he develops as a character so I guess he never developed as a character"
Well, assuming the chair gives you maybe two feet of elevation and the concrete slab is say, five feet thick (reasonable estimate from the illustration), that'd leave someone standing on the chair more than enough room to climb out once the slab had fully lowered, yet make it nearly impossible to actually climb out while the slab was still coming down.

e: Also there's 8 people in the room, they have 10 minutes left, meaning the ceiling is coming down at a rate of anywhere from roughly 2 feet to 1 foot per minute, they have no hope of enacting this climb-on-the-chair plan until the ceiling is low enough and no hope of actually leaving if the ceiling gets too low even if there's still technically room left, meaning all 8 people would have to finish this climbing plan within the space of maybe 3 minutes at most.

Yeah, actually that makes a lot of sense now looking at it closer. :saddowns: I was trying to figure out in my head if maybe they could just boost each other up and into the next level at some point and maybe at least half of them could get through or something, but I guess they'll be too busy fighting each other anyway. We'll see, I guess. Yuureitou got pretty weird and meh a while back but I'm still following it for some reason, probably because I laughed pretty hard at the "DAUGHTER, COME AWAY WITH ME TO THIS NEW PARADISE KNOWN AS NORTH KOREA!" part a little bit back.
