What other games are better on the Sega Power Base?

One version of SMS Rainbow Islands has a glitch that makes it impossible to reach World 8, I forget which. Get the Mega Drive version if you can, it has the extra loop with all the Taito-themed stages.

As for games where the SMS port/version is better, the ones that spring to mind are Renegade (has all the extra content from the NES version but looks much nicer), Bubble Bobble (more arcade-accurate, includes a bunch of exclusive features including 100 extra levels) and Ultima 4 (fairly accurate port of the original game with some extra conveniences taken from the sequels).

Not exactly Turbo Everdrive related, but based on a recent experience I'd like to hazard a theory that a lot of Everdrive SD card incompatibilities could be based in the card readers and/or adapters people are using. The SD card I was using in my Mega Everdrive was acting wonky as heck (not initializing on my PC, ED not recognizing it, etc) until I got ahold of a somewhat better card reader than the flimsy, cheap piece of crap adapters and reader I was using.

A quick format with SD Formatter, recopying my files back over, and it looks like it's working well in the Mega ED's MicroSD slot. Then, too, using the MicroSD slot might make a more positive connection than using the larger slot (especially through an adapter). Food for thought, I guess.

There's a King's Quest port on SMS that was designed from the ground up but more or less has the same puzzles as the original.

Sometimes I wonder how things would have been without nintendo's anti competitive rules in the 80s. Master System was clearly superior but nobody could release games without pissing off Nintendo. Imagine if Castlevania or Mega Man had original titles on SMS.

Well, yeah, that too. I was thinking from a developer perspective: what good is being able to scale a zillion sprites if you don't even have enough dots to draw them cleanly?

Anyway, wasn't the Lynx deliberately manufactured at that size because of the customer perception that bigger = better?

I always figured it was a case of them simply not being able to fit the Lynx hardware into a smaller system. It was a drat impressive handheld when it comes to graphics and whatnot considering when it came out.

Also the screen wasn't great, but look at every other handheld before the GameBoy Color. The original BrickBoy screen is not really any better, and even the Game Gear screen suffered the same blurring issues despite coming out years and years later. And then there was the Nomad, a system I actually have but can't play because the screen makes me dizzy trying to play anything from how badly it blurs. I'm not sure that they could have done much/any better with the Lynx screen than they did at the time.

Keep in mind that the Atari Lynx had originally been designed under the assumption that games would be sold on cassette tapes or microcassette tapes, which is why it has the odd habit of loading anything it needed into RAM at start time (and then later explicit loads throughout gameplay) rather than directly addressing ROM throughout gameplay. References to accessing tape were even still in the official developer documents.

The things is all of those devices had a comfortably higher resolution screen, which really helped out for keeping things distinguishable. That said though, from what I remember the Nomad screens looked a lot better when new (even though they weren't great) and there's some components you can replace to improve the quality.

My first Turbo Everdrive was a V1.1, and only supported up to 2GB, so I had to dig out a card small enough.

On the batch I got for the groupbuy, they were all V1.3 (also slightly different board layout meaning lots of careful dremeling of the 3D shells I paid so dearly for) but the good news is I put in a 16GB and it worked so I imagine anything you'd have lying around is all good :hf:

If poo poo ran on microcassettes that would have just been TOO embarrassing for even Atari. 160 sweet sweet vertical pixels and your data disappearing from tapes :allears:

Look the the PS2 era for your answer. The weaker console had the overwhelming audience and thus drew the software development while some ports were available.

Last night I popped Super Dodgeball into my NES for the first time in over a decade.

I hadn't played it on a good while because I'd reached a point where I could easily beat it no matter what, and I never got a new copy after selling off my original NES stuff sometime in the mid 90s (and then proceeded to start buying back less than a year later :sweatdrop:). Imagine my surprise when the credits started rolling after the USSR match. Apparently you need to beat every single team without ever losing a player to face the shadow team. Like, I hadn't even realized that your evil dopplegangers were a bonus/hidden final boss because this is the first time I've ever finished the game having lost a player. Amazing that you can still sometimes learn new stuff about old games.

I've always rolled with Sam, Randy and Bill because I like their supers. Defensive stats haven't mattered so much since I can catch the ball 95% of the time.

So. With SCART cables my ps2 works with my transcoder. My snes does not leading me to believe my tv's don't support 240p over component. However my game cube sends a 720x480 signal, but the screen is just black... if I swap to composite it's in the middle of stuff... any ideas?(I'm dumb)

Also I realize I'm never going to be able to play my SNES/Genesis on this setup so I have to upgrade. Is there a decent line doubler or decent SCART-vga or SCART-hdmi that exists that is affordable? I can't really drop $400 on something like that.

I loved that game as a kid. I found it at a store for like $3 at the time and had never heard of it but that label art completely sold me on it. Luckily, my parents were easy to convince on spending $3 on something like that. When I first put it in, I was so confused and didn't understand what I was supposed to do. I had never played a game with stealth stuff in it before, so I died like crazy when I tried to run through the spotlights without realizing how it worked. Once I figured it out though, it was a blast. Switching to the snipers in the windows was surprising and the "genre shifts" was nuts to me. Then the kinda FPS part once you kick in the window?! SOLD.

I haven't played it in years though, so I have no idea how well it's held up. I might have to dig that one out and give it a shot. I still think I have my original copy. Hopefully I find it in my boxes once I finally finish unpacking everything.

It has kind of a cinematic feel to it, with the different gameplay modes for each objective, and little touches like the music changing in intensity when you move into and out of cover.

We talkin' the giant Lego man or the set of SMS 3D glasses?

About a year ago I couldn't find a pair for under $80 but there are a bunch for less than that on Amazon right now. Expect some damage if you get a set for less than $50. Mine cost about $50 and the lenses were pristine because the protective film on them had never been taken off, but there's a crack in the middle that I had to shore up with a bit of super glue. It's a pretty common defect. Personally I think it happens because the glasses are a little narrow for the average human head. Or maybe my head is too drat big.

Even though retro definitely extends back to the 80's with me, I still feel content calling dance game stuff retro if just because of how long ago it feels like it's been since I first saw that sort of thing, and in a different place in my life.

Dance games were usually the bag of my friends, though, but these days I kind of feel like grabbing a pad and giving one of the games a whirl for old time's sake, assuming it's still possible to find a pad that's a step above 'terrible' and isn't absurdly expensive or has been mashed flat these days.

And also assuming I don't snap my ankles trying. :corsair:

Rescue is pretty drat cool if you ask me. It really plays more like an SNES game than a NES game, or even maybe an early computer game.
