I love the Ian Wright story. I'm also trying desperately to find a screencap of Ceefax showing he'd signed but it's a lost cause I think.

There's no story
The great thing about the Newcastle goal is that Bergkamp turns him with his left foot to spin the ball to the right of the player. I have seen countless players do that kind of turn with the opposite foot, but I have never seen anyone do it with the foot furthest from the ball. Here's Xavi doing 'the Bergkamp spin' the way everybody does it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxdgA6wJpG8

That's the wrong foot. It is much much harder to spin it around the defender with his left foot like Bergkamp did because he has to take a step with the same foot he takes the touch with, moving his leg clockwise while his body spins anticlockwise so that he can still land on the same foot. I'm not really explaining it well, but if you try it you'll see the difference.

This is a Boeing 747-8. It is a type of airplane.

Dennis Bergkamp famously suffered from pteromerhanophobia, or fear of flying which in this posters opinion is one of the reasons Bergkamp is not usually considered one of the all-time greats like his talent maybe warranted.

That's what makes this such a rare picture

I was introduced to Bergkamp through the forums or wandering around on youtube. I really wish I got a chance to see this guy play in real life. I downloaded a video or two like this on my phone so I can go back and watch it whenever. Really a technical genius.

I remember watching his goal against Newcastle and going apeshit after he spun around because it was probably the greatest goal I'd ever seen happen in real time and it's still probably up there in my mind as one of the all-time greats.

I was also lucky that a friend who went to the Bergkamp testimonial actually sent me the shirt she got for going, it's awesome but I never wear it because I don't want to completely ruin it.

I reckon he probably could do a job for us still. Not saying much when all we got is that Icelandic lump and loving Bojan, but still.

Anyway, I always get slightly depressed watching these arsenal vids. I'm sure part of it is just a biased fan's nostalgia, but I do think there's more to it. I won't deny there's better teams than that arse team (Bayern,Barca) and better, more effective players (Messi,Ronaldo), but there just isn't any team with that sort of artful, effortless class and it seems to me that the best players today are just ruthless instead of graceful like Zidane or Bergkamp.

The way he chipped keepers so effortlessly like that was amazing. Maybe it's just that keepers are better positioned nowadays, but besides Suarez's 40-yard shots you don't see that anymore.

I'm not really an Arsenal fan but I feel the same way when I watch that team. They made scoring look ridiculously easy at times, but in a way that was neither too clinical nor too fancy - somewhere in between.

Bergkamp just had it all, every time I see that Argentina goal I'm amazed by the first touch all over again.

Cacati in mano e pigliati a schiaffi!

Cross posting from the Serie A thread:

I went to a couple of Fiorentina games while I was on leave (VS Atalanta, Udinese and Inter) and of the 1k pictures I took during the Inter game, only about 40 or so made it. Some of those I still wouldn't have considered putting in, but Gigi wanted to see Inter Players in distress, so I added some. 2 pictures were out of focus, but they were really good moments so I kept them in. Once I actually upgrade my glass, I'll be going to more and more games, but more than likely Nuremberg as it's the closest to me. That or my team if they have a home game some time soon.

Camera was a Canon T4i with 75-300. I wish I had a better tele, but I don't have the money to spend on a good one. Lots of glass = lots of noise :(

I thought this was not actually a goal when taken in a shoot-out.
Once the ball moves away from the goal the penalty is over isn't it?

Nope
From Law 14: "The referee decides when a penalty kick has been completed."

I believe there used to be (years ago) complicated language about when exactly it was to be considered over, but it's literally as simple as that now.

This will always be my favorite along those lines

That was the team that made me a fan of both Arsenal and the Premiership. A lot of the responsibility for all those beautiful goals rests on the hunched shoulders of Pires.
