Are the Vikings actually in play for Watkins? Between Jennings and Patterson, you'd think they would want to go elsewhere. If they've got no one after that, they could probably find a cheap receiver in free agency, or later in the draft.

Depends. You want to see how a QB does regardless of his competition. Scouts pour over every piece of tape they can because it's their 8-10 hour a day job to do it. A guy like Jaws has so much poo poo going on in his life that I doubt he really gives that much scrutiny to the process.

Drafting primarily on need is a suboptimal strategy. They have some cap space they can use on defense, plus the addition of Zimmer should itself improve the defense somewhat. They're also picking so high that outside of Mack, Barr and Clowney there probably aren't great defensive prospects that high. Maybe one of the corners will rise but they just spent a first on a corner last year.

It's a frustrating deal." Lou Farrar, Muema's high school football coach added "at this point, we just hope he's safe. As long as he's safe. That's all that really matters." Muema exited the Combine after saying God told him he would be a Seattle Seahawk if he skipped workouts.

They face Jeffery and Marshall of the da bears, as well as the packs receiving group so another first round corner wouldn't be terrible - hypothetically, but I dont follow them close enough to know if they have larger needs in the front 7, at safety or offensively. I think theyll need a pass rush though with J. Allen leaving?

My amateur opinion is that there is enough depth in the draft to be able to pick outside of need in the top part of the first round. Especially if you think the player there is really destined to become a top player in the league, which probably fits Sammy Watkins. Picking him and then sifting through the piles of good DE/CB talent in the top of the second round seems like a pretty decent plan to me.

The exception would be if one of the QBs drops since it fills such a hole for the Vikings that would be much less likely to be fixed by taking Aaron Murray or whoever in the third.

The idea has come up, but it seems like the current line of thinking is that they'll go defense, QB, or trade down from 8. I personally feel that the talent available on D drops after Clowney and Mack, so a decent case can be made for taking Watkins over 2nd tier defensive prospects like Barr, Ealy, Gilbert, and Clinton-Dix. It is a deep receiver draft and the Vikings have a decent 3rd/4th type receiver in Jarius Wright, but it is simply a matter that I think that Watkins is a much better prospect than 2nd tier of defenders. Outside of like offensive tackle, which they are already heavily invested in, I'd rather take the best player available than pick for need.

John Brown posted:

They do, but especially when you are picking in the top 10, I don't think it is wise to force a pick for need if a much better player is available at another position. I'm just more convinced that Watkins will pan out than the group of defenders immediately after Clowney and Mack.

Hey all.

So we've been kicking around the idea of a podcast and I figure this year is as good as any to start one up for these forums. Darkforce898 made us a website at https://www.footballfunhouse.com for hosting these podcasts.

I'll be recording my first one tonight. While 45 minutes of my own voice is an angelic choir to you all, I would really like to get multiple people in on one of these. Since bewbies is MIA, I will literally take anyone who can A) hold a conversation and B) has a mic and skype. Let me know through PMs or here if you want to get in on these draft podcasts. I doubt they'll ever take off but I'll be advertising them on here and reddit.

I would be surprised but not disappointed if the Vikings wound up with Watkins contingent on Free Agency. The unexpected rise in cap room paints a grimmer picture on securing a guy like Verner or Michael Johnson but if they can shore up the D with some FAs, landing Watkins would be very exciting.

He's a possibility. The concern that I have with Donald is that his frame is pretty much maxed out at 285. He did put up great numbers at the combine and has a rare combination of speed and strength for a DT, but unless they plan to bulk up Sharrif Floyd, whose natural position is UT, I'd expect the Vikings to look for more of a NT to stop the run and protect the linebackers. They could look at Timmy Jernigan even though he is undersized for a NT, Louis Nix could be an option, but not at 8, or they could target Ego Ferguson in the 3rd.

FA is a big piece of the puzzle. There hasn't been much about who the Vikings are trying to re-sign, though it is assume that they are trying to keep Griffen. I am think that Verner is probably pricing himself out of consideration, but 25 year old Pro Bowl corners rarely hit the open market. That being said, Zimmer is good at developing/salvaging DBs, so I'll trust whomever they bring in.

I saw a "report" that the Texans are wanting to take Clowney now after that monstrous combine, but by "report" I mean "Bleacher Report" so grain of salt I guess

A number of NFL team sources say the Texans are now favoring taking Clowney with the first pick in the draft.

This information comes with a caveat—at this time of the year everyone lies about everything. It's always difficult to decipher what is true and what's a smokescreen around draft time.

However, an official inside the Texans organization told me that Clowney's speed, despite being so physically imposing, was one of the more stunning things he'd seen in a long time. "We've never really seen anything like Clowney. There's the chance he could redefine the position the way Reggie White or Bruce Smith did."

Mind you EJ tested as well as Geno Smith, had a lot of pretty game tape, and definitely interviewed well. It wasn't all that surprising that he went that high in hindsight, and I think it was a savvy pickup in a relatively weak draft.

You know believe it or not I think he's fixable as a QB. It will take a lot of effort on his part but that potential alone could see him as an early second rounder specifically for that position. In general he's a superb athlete on par with Clowney and ASJ (when ASJ gives a poo poo and isn't injured).

There's really not a precedent for a QB his size with his inability to throw a ball, though. Sure there's guys like Denard Robinson or Brad Smith, but they aren't nearly the size/speed ratio of Thomas. It makes it hard to predict exactly where he'll fall so I can't say with any certainty.

Have you seen them play? Wilson knows when to slide or head for the sideline when chased by a linebacker. Manziel will try to truck him.
