Y'all do understand what this means, right? The latest and greatest example of bleeding-edge advancement in automotive design is a drat Volvo station wagon. A station wagon is being presented as new, innovative and stylish. This can only end well. Seriously, this is loving awesome. Now I wanna see what a brand I can afford can come up with.

I really hope that the trend from SUVs to CUVs to oversized hatchbacks continues toward its logical conclusion that is the return of the station wagon and shooting brake.

The logical conclusion/ending is that CAFE will eliminate any chance of it being built unless it comes with a live rear axle and bed.

Honestly not sure what to make of that, I want more detailed suspension/driveline pictures. Looks at least competently fabricated at first glance though. Russia... On the other hand. Some maniac has put a 27L V12 Merlin/Meteor engine (the one originally put in WW2 main battle tanks and aircraft) in a 1980s Rover SD1. And fuel injected it. http://omextechnology.co.uk/page40.html Key quotes: quote:As this engine produces more torque at idle than the car's original engine did flat-out, and the gearing is for 200mph quote:and so mapping was very conservative, but the engine easily showed more torque than anything else on the Omex rolling road so far at over 1000lbft! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4XTZcfEKr4 It's presently (as of that article) making mid 300s hp and 1550 foot pounds while staying under 2k rpm, which sounds a hell of a lot more like a diesel than a gasoline engine. Guess it's the absolutely massive displacement and likely priceless cam (since no one really keeps V12 Merlin cams on the shelf these days.)

quote:As this engine produces more torque at idle than the car's original engine did flat-out, and the gearing is for 200mph Eh. The LS3 makes more torque at idle than the BMW M3's V8 did at flat out too, it's not that impressive.

What the christ is that axle out of? I feel like the last first-world vehicle that had that style of housing was a Model A, although Land Rover probably thought that kind of thing was acceptable for a brief time after the war. But, Russia.

I'm betting it's some goofy russian heavy truck axle but I, too, have never seen such a thing. Must be absolute hell to set the gears up in that thing.

Oh god, now that you say that I'm pretty sure that's the stock IFS steering rack attached to the axle housing as a steering ram. Not only is it completely under-rated for such large tires... I don't even want to know how they got the steering intermediate shaft through the suspension without breaking laws of physics and/or engineering. Yeah, sorry, wrong thread on that Russian monster.

kastein posted:Oh god, now that you say that I'm pretty sure that's the stock IFS steering rack attached to the axle housing as a steering ram. Yeah, it is the stock rack. As for how it's connected, squinting really hard reveals what looks to be a triple or maybe quadruple cardan as part of the linkage.

kastein posted:I'm betting it's some goofy russian heavy truck axle but I, too, have never seen such a thing. After looking around a bit my guess is it's from something like a GAZ-69 or UAZ-469. This is supposedly the front axle from a UAZ-469: It's offset instead of centered, but has the same closed front knuckles and weird pumpkin. Wikipedia says GAZ originally started as a joint venture with Ford, so the resemblance to the model A axle may not be coincidence.

Jesus, those things are like one giant ball of prehistoric axle tech. Coarse splined axleshafts. Gross. Closed knuckles with grease boots. Even grosser, especially if a boot tears. Ask me all about having the entire inner sidewall of your tire covered in grease and road grit. Kingpins (the one good feature I see) Goofy split axle housing that must be a nightmare to set up, nevermind constant leaking issues at the flange and the design simply being weaker than a solid housing with a diff cover. External hubs/drive slugs. I believe Dodge was the last company to use these... in 1993. Bolt-on inner steering knuckles. IIRC, LR was the last company to use these. And those sure look like drum brakes on a front steering axle, though that isn't exactly unheard of on a heavy transport vehicle. The only way those axles could be more archaic, engineering wise, is if they also have partially open 4-ball rzeppa style CV joints instead of U-joints or proper ball and socket CVs. kastein fucked around with this message at 09:48 on Mar 2, 2014 |
