So family plan was moved to 10gig shared last week which came down to something ridiculously cheap (hate that I'm not unlimited but makes sense for totality of costs across other devices my parents have). My Galaxy SII Skyrocket has lost it's wifi capabilities, something needed to change on my end.

First, I just pulled the trigger on my 6 month overdue upgrade on Amazon Wireless to the Note 3. This should not affect the plan correct? As far as I can tell it should not as the major account change has already occurred (negates concern of Amazon 181 days stipulation) and I'm simply renewing the 2-year contract on the line (agreed I was due for an upgrade). Right?

Second, what is the best thing to do with my current SII Skyrocket? The wifi doesn't work but it's otherwise totally functional without scratches on screen though plastic housings show its use.

Yeah it sucks you paid and lost those subsidies, not you have plenty of quality options under $500.

Buying the note 3 on a two year contract makes your specific line on the mobile share plan $40 a month, not $15. The $15 a month pricing is no contract pricing.

The skyrocket really isn't worth anything, I would hold as a backup, sell for whatever you can get or donate.

Anybody who signed a contract before they launched the plans Feb 2nd gets the $15 pricing because ATT did not yet offer the new plans. Any contracts afterwards are $40 a month.

So for most phones it's better to do next, where the line stays at $15 a month and then the phone is $20-25 a month.

EDIT: Cancelled Amazon order. This is actually pretty awesome, new phone every year for same cost is great (presuming I'll still need to $36 activate on Next every time?).

What do I need to do with AT&T? Anything? Can I just drop in my current SIM since it's an unlocked phone?

If you're buying from Motomaker, you don't do anything with AT&T until you get the phone. Then you call the number listed in the provided pamphlet to activate it.

Alright AT&T people, could use a little help here.

I have a Mobile Share Value plan, 10GB with 3 users. I am trying to add a new line (4th line) and port an existing number over. I have a brand new Moto G to use on this line. The biggest complication is that the new line is for my brother and he is in another city. He has the new Moto G now.

Last night I attempted to port his number over to my account. The plan was, when the port goes through and the number is on my account, send him to a local AT&T store to get a SIM and then we activate the phone.

First, the AT&T webpage said his number was valid to port over.
Then, when I attempted to actually port it, it told me that the number could not be ported, no explanation as to why (for reference, the number is with Virgin Mobile, and is currently active).

I called support and talked to a few people, none of whom seemed to have any experience activating a line or porting a number for a phone that wasn't purchased through AT&T. They were unable to port the number or open the line without a SIM card. They did confirm though, that the number should be able to be ported.

The resolution from the rep was to have my brother go into his AT&T store, and just get a SIM from them, then when we have the SIM number, call support back with that the IMEI # and everything else and do the whole thing over the phone.

I have added his name as an authorized user on the account, I am hoping this is enough to allow them to at least give him a new SIM.

Is this plan gonna work? Any adivce or workarounds to porting the number?

Dunno about the port issue. However, account holders are the only ones authorized to add new lines of service. As long as the line exists in your account, adding him as an authorized user will allow him to get a sim card on an already activated line.

Hmm, well that is the problem.

This is exactly what I just got back from doing actually. The woman at the store understood instantly what I needed. Took 20 minutes. Whole lot smarter than the phone support who just sent me in a circle of nope can't do it call the other support line. All's well that ends well though.

In their defense, they needed to put some sort of equipment on the line. They could now get around the system. So when they were saying they needed a SIM, it was either you had one, or you had one shipped.

A cool thing, as of the 8th, anyone in a two year contract is allowed to use the $25 per month smartphone price for the 2-6gb mobile share plans. So along with the 2gb price change, it's actually worthwhile for me to change from the plan I got in August.

I have a Nexus 5 that I really like on T-Mobile with no contract. Unfortunately T-Mobile service isn't great at my apartment, while AT&T is. Can I get a 2 year contract with AT&T, pay $200 for whatever the latest and greatest version of the iPhone is, then sell the (I'm assuming locked) iPhone for $500-600 and use my Nexus 5 for the remainder of the 2 year plan?

Could also just go with one of the new no-contract AT&T plans, but was curious about the above.

Yeah either would wor, you'd have to run the numbers and see what makes more sense. I haven't found a way to make 2 year contract devices work in my favor though.

2 year contracts aren't worth it anymore to be honest. AT&T NEXT is honestly the way to go now. What kind of data do you need?

You could do this but its kinda pointless I think. I would just bring your Nexus 5 over, do the 2 GB plan out of contract for 65 dollars a month and get $100 credit within 90 days if you do this before the end of the month.

That sounds like the smartest thing. Hadn't looked up AT&T's no contract plans yet, just read recently that they existed. 2gb works for me because I'm on WiFi basically everywhere I go. There haven't been any reports of contract customer data getting substantially higher priority than non-contract, have there?

This is not a prepaid plan. We still run a credit check you're just providing your own equipment. There is a prepaid option that is similar but you don't get the $100 credit.

However since you asked, postpaid plans get a much higher network priority than prepaid. But these plans are postpaid.

So, I just want to run a "to good to be true" check with the folks in this thread, but skimming back it looks like this is True.

Right now I pay ~$160/mo with tax on a 6 GB plan, two smartphone lines, and insurance on one phone, and 22% discount. My girlfriend broke her GS3 screen yesterday so today I checked in at the local AT&T corporate store because when I looked online, Next seemed "to good to be true". Well, in store, that story didn't change. Brian (the dude that works for AT&T) said that I can upgrade from 6GB to 10GB and get a Moto X under the Next plan (18 mo upgrade cycle) and basically walk out with $4/mo off my bill and the new phone. He says this is somehow better for AT&T because numbers, and I didn't really understand that thought process, but I know that this is better for me.

Did AT&T really make changes that actually give me better pricing? Am I just dreaming? I was also at a Comcast branch office today and the guy helping me transfer some email addresses from one account to another said he could reduce my bill for me. Is this opposite day where somehow I get to stick it to The Man?

It seems too good to be true, but that's the great thing about capitalism. As soon as T-Mobile decided they were going to challenge the status quo and cut prices, everybody else started following suit to keep their customers.

Did the math. Seems like he was off by $2 but still you are paying less.

Your old plan is $70.2 base charge + $35 line charge + $35 line charge + $20 insurance = $160.2

Your new plan is $78 base charge + $15 line charge + $15 line charge + $20 insurance + $30.76 equipment charges = $158.76

It's better for AT&T because you give your phone back after 18 months when you upgrade.

So yeah. You are one of the lucky ones that ends up paying way less.

As for Comcast, you are most likely getting screwed.

Serious mention, I never talk about the 18 month trade in with Next. I just tell people it's a 26 month agreement. I think it's more straight forward, and unless you are getting the galaxy s3 mini the phone will sell for more than the trade in at 18 months. What's great is the price drops at 26 months.

I used my 2 year upgrade to have a new iPhone 5S sent to me. I then sold it on ebay without opening it. The person who bought it is now saying that the phone is asking for the billing zip code and last four digits of the social security number on my account. I know the phone isn't activated since my current phone still works (and AT&T even told me that they would activate it in a few weeks because I haven't yet). The guy said it's asking this when his SIM is in it and even when there is no SIM in it.

I was under the impression that this was a legitimate thing to do. Can I ask AT&T to remove this protection? Was I supposed to open the box and unlock it and then send it?

Its because the fool you sold it too is trying to activate it by phone. They just need to go to a COR store and get a SIM card and IMEI assigned to their number. You *MIGHT* could call AT&T or got to a COR store and get them the "delete a pending direct fulfillment upgrade" to help with the issue. But really, that shouldnt be necessary. If you got your money, that fool is on their own now.

Tell him to stop trying to use the sim the phone came with. Otherwise, take the return, finish the activation, and try selling again. Or give him the last 4 of your social and billing zip code.

I'm still stuck on why you are doing this? I take it whichever old plan you have is less than the new ones? Because for most people you can stay off contract and save money without buying a contract phone and selling it.
