Occupation posted:But hey apparently it's fine for some no name to accuse some dude of making up a girlfriend for no adequately explained reason and the audience to then insult him over it! Yeah. I think Dan was more bemused than anything at the idea of a stranger being so invested in this guy's life that she'd challenge his relationship apropo of nothing. Also, the guy wasn't shouted down but was, in fact, given the last word on the matter. Its not even close to the woman who was told to shut up and sit down by the audience. That being said, has anyone seen any pictures of the confrontation? I'd love to know what was going on to make the crowd support the woman despite her sounding like a complete loving nutball.

Occupation posted:Dan called up a weird girl who described herself as being bullied for being "absolutely beautiful" who then recommended to Dan that he should treat waitstaff like absolute poo poo and threaten their jobs. Then she said that all relationships have a "male" dominant and "female" passive member, then she got excellently skewered by a queer woman in the audience for being ignorant as poo poo and a bit homophobic, to which she responded essentially "well it's my opinion and you don't have a right to insult me for it" and then got booed at for being really lovely about her shirt opinions, to which the audience started chanting "let it go" as she wouldn't stop loving talking about how she was right and everyone else was wrong and also mean for saying her opinions were poo poo. I don't see the connection. Because Dan Harmon once stood up for someone who probably didn't deserve it, he should've done the same this time? The fact that he didn't is evidence of... what, exactly? And I don't see any problem at all with some "no-name" accusing a dude of making up a girlfriend. He's a grown man who chose to get on that stage. Was everyone involved obliged to take his story at face value? They gave him plenty of opportunities to defend himself, and they questioned her far more than him, at least initially. And, as others have already mentioned, there's a difference between shouting someone down because you find their opinions to be unacceptable, and questioning whether someone is telling the truth or not. Irish Joe posted:I think Dan was more bemused than anything at the idea of a stranger being so invested in this guy's life that she'd challenge his relationship apropo of nothing. Yeah, they seemed confused and amazed by what was happening more than anything else. As for why she would call him out, and why people would support her, I think it was mainly the fact that he was so obviously full of poo poo, and not in a way that was funny or interesting. It started out bad enough and then it just got worse as he tried to roll with the punches.

Everyone's a "no-name" in Harmoncountry, anyway. I assume Dan was so ardent in his defense of Lisette because that all went down in Harmontown, and maybe the familiar setting and faces make the audience feel less like strangers. Then, it was Harmontown coming down on Lisette, while Jeremy and Eva were both strangers in a strange place. Plus, what Dan says about the audience is true. When one of their own steps up to the mic, they're already at a huge disadvantage for assuming they deserve it.

For anyone else who's a fan of Rick and Morty, Harmon's tirade against hospitals really reminded me of Rick's hatred of bureaucracy, mostly from the pilot episode. I mean, the dialogue sounded like Harmon beforehand, but it tickled me to hear the parallels to Rick's strong ODD tendencies. (around 1:08:00 in on episode 90): "Everyone's got their things, man. Mine is having loving fluid siphoned out of my body, through a tube, by a bureaucrat, so it can be sent to a lab. That's ME! That's MINE!" That and his description of how, when he's having blood drawn, he imagines himself being interrogated by the state, really cracked me up.

Well, I guess I should feel great that he responded to my post in third person. I listened to the first episode, and I had no idea Adam had appeared in an episode of Community. Made me watch the episode again.

Harmontown is a rinky-dink podcast being hosted in the back of a comic book store, not the goddamn Tonight Show. As long as they have something to contribute to the conversation (and aren't super schticky), everybody "deserves it."

RE Jeremy: He made a huge post on R/Harmontown about how he was really, really drunk when he came on stage. He had been drinking because he hadn't taken the breakup well. More broadly: The metanarrative of how everyone on the podcast thinks they come across (enlightened) is very, very different from how they actually act, which is 20-30% of why the show is so hilarious. The only two who're consistent with how they act in terms of politics and patronization are really Spencer and Kumail, which is why they're the best characters. There's a Dan monologue this week that ends in a really neat reveal about how he feels about black people. Also, during D&D I'm 90% sure he drops the N-bomb and the crowd does not go for it.

Is it the part that starts at 1:57:50, where Dan suggests that a rapper wearing chains is a reference to slavery? I hear no N-bombs there, either, but I do hear the comment landing like a brick.

I sometimes find it hard to know when Dan is being contrary for the hell of it or doing a bit. Do you think he really got pissed at being given "notes" from Spencer on how to run the show (Spencer complaining about being brought up too early)?

Drunkboxer posted:Still no Spencer . Also Jeff is a bit of a grump. Yeah, I hope Spencer isn't totally burnt out. He brings so much to the show, even when he says little. Jeff's Gravity diatribe was a bit much. It's probably just because I enjoyed the movie quite a lot, but I found his misremembered critiques weak, for the most part. He didn't even rail against the actual dumbest part, either! Using a fire extinguisher to fly through space!? Also, gently caress that Sam guy. "12 Years a Slave was pornographic. Django should've won."

The Sam guy seemed high. He was just spouting opinions without actually justifying any of them. "But Django was better..." *dead silence* Davis was trying too hard to be combative with his Gravity rant. I like that Dan just let him go and then gave a quick "Chill out!" one-liner in response. There's plenty of scientific inaccuracies in the movie, but I'm positive Jeff doesn't actually know any of them and it felt like he saw an article headline somewhere and wanted to spout out "angular momentum!" to sound smart.
