I mean, gently caress, Shepard practically brushes her teeth with Reaper-tech on a daily basis.

But yeah, pretty much everything about that last sequence with the Catalyst was uncomfortably jarring and seemed to kick a lot of people into interpretation-overdrive, as opposed to more grounded scenes where we just accept what is being presented as fact. Shepard collapses on a random panel without accomplishing the mission, which just so happens to be the panel that floats up into a weird open-air Space Heaven without Shepard wearing a helmet, confronted by a ghostly figure that tries to convince you of something that contradicts everything prior to that moment. It was basically a checklist of "this can't be real" signals that are usually reserved for malicious hallucinations.


And to jump back a bit in the discussion to the Reject ending; while I'd normally agree that it shouldn't be interpreted as an insult to the fans who brought up such a possibility, the fact that Bioware for some reason saw fit to tie that ending to shooting the Catalyst- something that was pretty ubiquitous throughout the ending dissection videos as a petty form of protest at the weird options presented... seems a bit mean-spirited, or at the very least, bitter. From memory, no other NPC in the entire trilogy reacts to gameplay like that, so I can't think of a reason for suddenly making an exception here. I guess you could make the argument that it's a way to pick that ending after breaking away from the conversation, but the same thing could be accomplished by letting the player go back into the dialogue tree and choose the dialogue path that already leads to it. :shrug:

I'm giving Bioware the benefit of doubt here and I'm pretty sure they didn't intend for it to be hostile at all, but it's really, really stupid how they did not see / were surprised that people might interpret it that way what with the mood of the fanbase at the time and with how it all plays out when you actually play through it.

The virtual fighting thing has all the ME2 people as teammates (I wonder if it could have had Thane and Mordin had they survived somehow). So Bioware had all that worked out but decided not to let you use them in the actual mission. Baaaaaaaah.

Elite Reaper enemies are hella easy, while elite Cerberus just ruin my charging chains with a few shield swipes. Never had that much trouble with them in the actual game.

Ashley's armor shifts randomly between two versions every few seconds.

They come across as out-of-place. It really makes me wonder if indoctrination was in fact an old element of the ending that was removed at some point.

Something along the lines of it was indeed considered, yes, but it never made it to the final version of the script:

This is what makes me most sad about the gameplay in 2 and 3. Biotics just feel so anemic. When I play an adept in ME1, I am making GBS threads out singularities all the time. In ME2, I don't play an adept and in ME3, it's all about priming explosions all day, err day, which while fun, just doesn't feel as awesome as throwing around stupidly powerful biotics in ME1.

Decided to play the multiplayer for a bit.

The Bioware DLC download doesn't work with firefox (brute forced it by getting the link in IE, then pasting into firefox, mostly because I couldn't be bothered to find my password and put it into IE)

Origin verifies my files and tells me that I don't need an update. I hit "play" and it stops me - there's a 1.5 gig update cued. Brilliant. Origin is also almost impossible to reconnect without a shutdown if your internet connection skips a beat.

Anyways... how is a Vanguard supposed to deal with shield Guardians / Atlas mechs in multiplayer? I remember those were an issue in the Citadel arena.

I never liked the indoctrination theory because for all the complaints about the original ending not bringing any real closure the indoctrination theory would've been even worse in that regard while remaining equally pretentious.

Huh, that must be a recent change then. I've always been able to install those directly from within Origin.

That was actually the one single good thing about that piece of garbage, not having to deal with the convoluted mess that was the BSN for DLC anymore (seriously that system was a loving nightmare for ME2) but alas ...

In multiplayer the enemies will wreck your poo poo if you are exposed for more than a few seconds.

Multiplayer vanguards are really annoying because they keep ping ponging around blocking your shots, stealing your kills, getting separated from the group and dying or trying to melee a Banshee and dying.

Depends on the vanguard, BatVan can be played in a fairly measured, tactical way for instance.

Out of pure curiosity, could you be more specific on what you downloaded? Last time I played it before uninstalling you could download all the multiplayer expansions directly through Origin. As bad as EA can be I find it really hard to believe they want back to downloading essential expansions through the terrible BSN.

All the multiplayer DLC - Resistance, Resurgence, Rebellion Revenge, Resurrection, Revengeance (basically doing these from memory, I wonder how many actually correct).

Huh. I may have been thinking about the ME2 DLC, which I downloaded just a short while ago (and which does in fact direct you to the Bioware network). My mistake then.

Grab a Piercing mod. Your gun doesn't matter all that much as a Vanguard, so something even as puny as a Phalanx can do you justice versus Guardians and gives you something to do on Escort objectives. If you're using a SMG/Pistol, you'll also want the Power Generator mod to boost your biotics. We also have a still pretty active multiplayer thread, if you wanna try out Gold with a couple of goons to carry you. http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3499990

Also, if you're a novaguard and have shockwave, use shockwave. It'll force the shield up for a few of seconds for an unobstructed view of his face. For vanguards in general, just charging a guardian will force the shield away for a bit and you can shoot him right in the face.

HuDept is also fan-loving-tastic and a default class. I took one through a gold match last night and came in second behind a Krogan Warlord.

But yeah, check the MP thread as there's still a thriving PC community to help you get through games.

I think Miranda's dad magically killed her somehow. The wiki claims he shoots her if Miranda kills him after you let him go, but I didn't see anything of the sort. I guess I'm supposed to kill him? It seems stupid that the only way to get Miranda to survive is to fail the diplomacy check.

Okay, that time I just...shot Oriana, and then Miranda magically died. Again. I must have not given her alliance resources, I guess. I've spread playing this game out way too far and I can barely remember what I did earlier on.

edit: I forgot to meet with her! Luckily I hoard saves, so Miranda gets to live. I couldn't think of why I'd deny Miranda resources.

I thought it was the fight with Kai Leng that was supposed to have killed Miranda- she gets banged up either way, but if she doesn't get the intel, she bleeds out after the Oriana scene (though there indeed might be a failed-diplomacy scene with her Dad that I haven't seen).

I was going off of the wiki (which says her dad shoots her), and it turns out I just forgot I was supposed to meet with Miranda. I've been playing ME3 on and off for probably over a year now, and it must have just fallen through the cracks. It definitely did look like she just died from accumulated damage, in spite of what the wiki said. And when I say "damage," I mean she was limping a lot and had scratches on her face.

edit: If it turns out that somehow failed to send her the dossier on Kai Leng, I'm going to be irritated. I think I did, though.

She made it through that time.

Is there any reason not to hit the Cerberus base if I have no outstanding quests? I have the Citadel quest, but I'm saving that for post-endgame. Are there any sneaky quests that I should root out before I commit to the attack? Also, I'd better be able to kill Kai Leng.

The Cerberus Base attack is the game's point-of-no-return (after the game ends, this is the point where you get dumped if you want to play on and do, say, Citadel). So, yeah, no reason to wait.

So is there any chance of DLC going on sale? I picked up the mass effect trilogy (PS3) on sale nearly a year ago but have been so busy I haven't had a chance to start up Mass Effect 1.

And apparently if I become a fan I'll have to shell out nearly $60 for all the missing DLC (mainly ME3 stuff and Arrival, I think). Why in the holy hell isn't there a cheaper bundle option somewhere?
