I love you, and I hate myself for not checking the level folders for the sound effects. While I'm pissed the Blood IP wasn't attainable, I'm kind of not surprised, especially after the System Shock 2 license (it was either that or the SIN license) went to a weird legal place that needed money to fix. I'm really surprised GOG pulled it out of the fire. What's the current situation with the No One Lives Forever games (exclude contract J.A.C.K. which is irrelevant)? Even if it does get rebooted or expanded, I just don't see it being any good, considering that most FPSs made by big studios end up being the same monotonous lovely clone of whatever that is popular at the time (Halo during early 2000s, COD/Battlefield current generation). So this is a new game but I think it'd appeal to the classic FPS crowd in a huge way: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/03/05/wot-i-think-tower-of-guns/ Quake like fast movement circlestrafing, never stop moving or you die. The premise is you're in an FPS bullethell where you have to race your way through randomly generated roguelike rooms of death that spew projectiles at you. Think first person Mario on the levels with tons of bullet bills. http://store.steampowered.com/app/266110/ Currently $10, I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

It moves slow because there are powerups that increase your movement speed, jump height, and the number of times you can jump in the air. Grab enough of that poo poo and you'll be crossing entire rooms in a single bound. Feels really, really good.

According to this, Croteam plans on releasing Serious Sam 4 by the end of this year. There's also news about a new game unrelated to Serious Sam that Croteam is working on and Android port of SS3, in case you are insane enough to play an FPS on a mobile device. They also plan on releasing a PS3 port of SS3 soonish.

I don't care what "fast RAM" is, it's Doom: But on the Amiga Fears (Manyk, 1995) Ooooooh, I've tried to be nice so far, but this is crap. Even the trainer menu threw me for a bit Doom's a very direct inspiration here, with the level intermission screen making an appearance. The next level is apparently the "strange cliff nodule" level: Technology-wise, this is an odd huge pixelled mix of Doom and Wolfenstein: everything's on a grid, but the heights can vary. This allows them to make five thousand bloody inescapable pits of bloody lava arrrrgh Couple this with an unmodifiable control scheme that thinks the return key is a sensible run option, lives (again), only end-of-level saves (again), overly heavy fogging so you fall into the pits too easily, and enemies that all just sit there shuffling at you and taking occasional pot-shots, and you have a great big pile of the worst poo poo a Doomalike can do. I mean, look at the knife "animation" gently caress off, Fears.

Monolith developed it and got eaten by Warner Bros. Fox Interactive published it and got eaten by Vivendi. I heard in a podcast or article (can't find the source now) that someone in Activision had/knew something about the rights but that information may have been muddled when Vivendi purchased Activision and then Activision split off again. Someone can stake claim but then someone else could challenge it. NOLF is seriously hosed and it's a shame because they're awesome games. Except Contract JACK.

I've been digging around in some old magazines and you guys should appreciate this. It's just so beautifully ironic. I have no idea what the gently caress Sierra was thinking and I remember advertisements in magazines for the 500+ map megapack!!!. It's fascinating to me that I company would just blatantly do this. Total Meltdown ended up being the name for Duke3D's Playstation port. Strangely I can't find anything about the case on the internet. Any attempt to search just brings up the current 3D Realms/Interceptor vs. Gearbox lawsuit.

It's about what you would expect for a bunch of maps downloaded from modding sites back in the day. Tons of "here's a map of MY HOUSE!" maps.

Holy poo poo I bought Total Meltdown back in '97 or so and I never knew about the sordid history behind it. To clear up any confusion, it wasn't an expansion pack and didn't have any new content or anything, it was just a D!Zone-style collection of usermaps culled from the internet without permission. Shady business practices aside it was a pretty sizable collection of maps and it's what pretty much single-handedly got me into Build editing (and by proxy Doom editing) so it's not all bad. Also the screenshot in that article is of island1.map, which along with its sequel the_base.map, were my absolute favorite usermaps in the collection. That's an enormous, sector-built box of shotgun shells behind the Commander there.

Hades 2 is a FPS released in 1999 by Brazilian developer Espaco Informatica. It has a lot of gray textures, switch-hunting and terrible weapon design. Worth a look at least to see the sprites of people wearing Matrix-like gear and mooks which look like monsters from 60's b-movies. It's freeware now: http://www.espacoinf.com/hades2-i.htm Another obscure old FPS is Target, released in 1998 in my homeland. It's utterly terrible in nearly every aspect, but it does have an enjoyable split-screen multiplayer, which was quite a feat back then and made some computer science lessons much more enjoyable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGWMjpYPSWk Speaking of Smuta, it's actually a sequel to Dungeons of Kremlin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AjDXV2Np4s. There was also a third game in this series, and if you have ever browsed the game reviews portion of the main page, you may have heard of it. Through years I have accumulated quite a lot of those interactive shits, like Mortyr, Nerves of Steel, Skout and similar garbage. laserghost fucked around with this message at 23:58 on Mar 6, 2014 |
