I used to like Land, but I also maintain that Land used to be better and has gotten incredibly lazy over the years. I mean, look at this poo poo. It's Land, you can tell that. It's cheesecakey and that last panel has the girl-running-hands-through-her-hair reference he's going to come to love so very much. But there's also clearly been effort put into it, there's personality, it's not flat, all the facial expressions are right. This is art done with photo references, not the tracing he'll devolve into.

I will say that I think the coloring is lifting things up a bit. I usually see Land's art paired with very glossy coloring that aims for photo realism, but misses and hits Photoshop and just accentuates the issues with his pencils.

Alien Rope Burn posted:I felt Infinity, like most of Hickman's work, was really well plotted and even paced pretty well, but man, he just can't focus or characterize in a way that interests me. It all feels like the charts at the back of his books, but the problem is the book doesn't have much more personality. It's at least better than Shield, where it's mostly just people explaining the plot to the viewpoint character, and when he finally takes a major action of his own, they then explain to him why it's pointless for him to try and act. In the middle of major events I understand what you mean, but Hickman also wrote that Hong Kong issue of Avengers, and the FF issue where Johnny Storm and Peter Parker are room mates. So he can definitely do character beats (the F4 issue after Johnny Storm dies and Spider-Man takes Franklin out for a hot dog).

I really liked the first issue of IDW's new Rogue Trooper series. Is their Judge Dredd run any good? I really want to find back issues of it rather than read it in trade. Dredd is sort of my collection focus right now.

Like, I liked some of his character beats with Richards way back when I was reading his run on Fantastic Four, but it feels secondary to his Big Arc kind of stuff. I admit I lost patience well before the issues you're bringing up. CapnAndy posted:I used to like Land, but I also maintain that Land used to be better and has gotten incredibly lazy over the years. At least he's off Mighty Avengers now, so I don't have to see Luke Cage giving us scary rictus grins.

Does Land ever do cons? I'd love to see him at a quick sketch table, sneaking Penthouse cutouts under his tracing paper. At least Liefeld can whip up his own pouches and grrr-faces.

Rob and pretty much everyone who ever worked for his Image division (Marat Michaels, Chap Yaep, Dan Fraga, Stephen Platt, Renato Arlem, Roger Cruz etc) were all fans of recycling as much work at possible. Look how many times Rob had repurposed previous work into a new book. He did it with his Captain America run and re retooled a Prophet story into Cable.

All the first few issues are done-in-ones, there is an overarching story running through but it probably won't read any better collected like a standard 6 issue arc would or whatever.

Surely if you're an actual fan of the character and the initial word is very positive, it makes more sense to get on board now because if fans of Moon Knight won't buy his book until it's on sale, chances aren't it's not going to be around very long and it's back to waiting years before he gets another shot. I'd respectfully argue it makes more sense to trade/sale wait on high selling, established series in no danger of cancellation than ones featuring C-listers/unproven new guys.

I wouldn't say so necessarily, but I think him doing a Moon Knight book will probably help sales. Having Shalvey and Bellaire doesn't hurt, either.

I mean this in the best way, but Moon Knight reminded me of a slightly stuffy and more unhinged Fell.

I keep reading things that make me feel like all of Ennis' stories are "Person wakes up to find out they have powers". Is it really a common theme in his books or have I just happened upon the few that feature that type of plot?
