So, I found recently the Sabbat War anthology. I have only read the ADB story in it, which was pretty decent in and of itself. How's the rest?

I enjoyed it, I think the Sabbat Crusade setting is probably one of the more fleshed out "modern" 40k settings and the anthology benefited from a higher quality of work because of all the foundations laid by Abnett.

Edit: Is it bad that I want an entire book from Eszrah's ap Niht's POV? Moth-man meets Imperial Guard seems like too good of a story point to pass up.

I'm listening to the audiobook of Scars by Chris Wraight and holy crap. So much :psyduck: at the :china: accents.

My housemate came into the room while I was on Chapter 11 and was like, "Is that dude doing a really bad Chinese impression?"

In the readers defense, he had to go from guys like Bjorn and Leman Russ, to Salamanders (who sound like Russians or something) to regular marines who speak Gothic to White Scars who admit that they don't have a great grasp of it.

Still, it gets pretty awful. Is there any real good fluff reason for why the White Scars can't speak Gothic very well other than the fact that it would be cool for a bunch of asian marines to speak engrish?

Zero. And while the White Scars have very little fluff about them, Scars contradicts much of the little that exists. I personally didn't like the book overall in both plot and in execution.

I really really liked it and thought it did a great job with the Legions all asain gimmick. The author even calls it bullshit in the text. Im not familiar with their fluff before, but why didn't you like it? Its def a HH book Id recommend as one of the better ones.

Really disliked it's pace, it's inconsistent and pretty much all of it's plots served no purpouse. Enjoyed the action scenes, especially the spaceship boarding with heavy jetbikes and how it fleshed the legion, the Khan and indirectly, the Death Guard and Mortarion.

I'm with Waroduce in that I enjoyed the book (enough to listen to the audiobook after reading it once) and the fluffy primarch stuff like the drunken chat between Sanguinius, Fulgrim, Khan and Mortarion on Ullanor about which one of them would win in a fight kept me happy.

Also my favorite moment in it is when Russ asked Khan for help against the Alpha Legion and hearing Khans reply Russ solemnly looks to his messenger and says, "Until next Winter? He really said that?"

In terms of book criticisms, as noted earlier, the pacing was bad, the plot went nowhere, etc. In terms of fluff they pretty much abandoned the "Genghis Khan in space" thing in terms of the Khan's personality and in a lot of other aspects, as well as the bond of brotherhood between the Khan and Russ. Probably just because the author doesn't know that much about the actual historical Khans of course. And the characterization that the scars are super insecure was kind of werid in general.

Did I ever tell you my favorite color was blue?
I thought that certain ethnic traits that were predominate in Space Marine chapters was a direct result of the geneseed associated with their primarch. The whole notion that the White Scars selectively picked recruits exclusively with Asian traits is kind of retarded. I suppose if that just happens to be what people look like on their recruiting worlds I could roll with that explanation. Hell, in the Horus Heresy novels one of the Mournival is nick named Little Horus specifically because the geneseed has caused him to look so much like his primarch...

I just think it's weird to have space Genghis Khan be the one who's ambivalent about the Great Crusade considering he's based on one of the greatest conquerors in all history and even his fictional origin is about uniting all the tribes of his homeworld through conquest.

I just finished Eisenhorn, and so as directed by the thread title, have returned.

(he is a good writer, but it's almost like he gets 2/3 of the way through a story and then just gets bored with it and timeskips to Final Boss Fight. still, I enjoyed all three, and the short stories were awesome)

Now, I am in the mood to read something along the lines of spacemans pewpewpew aliens. Are there any decent books about Tyranids?

Nope!

But Brothers of the Snake and Helsreach are both about marines fighting orks. Former is (old) Abnett and the latter is ADB and is the better one, but both are decent as far as vs aliens "bolter porn" goes.

fake edit: Ah, there's also the short story "Deathwing" which deals with genestealers. Old fluff, though.

Several of Sandy Mitchell's Ciaphas Cain books feature combat versus the Tyranids. I would read them all as they are pretty good in general, but take breaks to read other stuff in between the Cain books, because although they are fun, they have a tendency to be a bit samey.

E: While we're on the subject of recommendations, what are some good 40k books from the perspective of the Eldar and Tau?

None, they don't exist. Fehrvari did an ok tau short story but even that struggled a bit. Which is fine by me personally, since I preferred the old policy of no non-human povs. Aliens should be alien not bad racial allegories.

I was reading the Sword of Justice/Vengeance books, and they were really cool, seeing hosed-up chaosy creatures and stuff, but one thing bothered me about Nefarettacan'tspellit.

Is Slannesh the only Chaos God that women ever fall to? In almost every novel with a female chaos character, it's Slannesh. Sexy ladies who do a lot of drugs and torture people. The only exception I can think of offhand is the female IG who turns to Khorne in Storm of Iron.

I know, I know, sexism in spacemans is not surprising, but the more I thought about it the dumber it seemed.

It's entirely poor choices, there's no fluff about women being especially prone to Slaanesh worship or anything like that.

There's a fantasy character/novel about a female Khornate warrior called Valkia the Bloody and there's the captain of Angron's ship in Betrayer but I think most of the females follow Slaanesh because the writers are all terrible.

Nik Vincent collaborates with Dan sometimes (they're married). They wrote Gilead's Blood together. I haven't read it.

Sarah Cawkwell started using initials for her name (S. P. Cawkwell) for some reason. I read The Gildar Rift, thought it was boring and bad. She likes the Silver Skulls chapter a lot.

The Siege of Castellax was pretty disappointing, I thought. C.L. Werner is better writing fantasy than 40k.

Wrath of Iron and Battle of the Fang, like most anything else by Chris Wraight, are pro reads. Legion of the Damned is also great.
