I was thinking more spirited away, probably because of the fish and because I just like spirited away better. At least he didn't go for Ponyo. That character is the thing of nightmares. There's some line in it where an old lady is scared of Ponyo because she's a fish with a human face. I'm like, "NO! The creepy part is the hair! It's a fish with loving hair!" Edit: Too bad they didn't have any assistants who could actually tie obi. That seems like something they really should have thought of. Bored fucked around with this message at 20:29 on Mar 7, 2014 |

And thus, the "Make her safe but special immunity the person who clearly was not the worst out there so at least that people don't get annoyed with this bullshit" happened. I'd bet money on it. The second I saw it I actually called both the fact they wouldn't kick her for it, and that they might avoid kicking anyone instead. I'm convinced if it had been anyone else that churned out that thing, they'd been gone with ridicule. And on an objective level that armor was made of craft foam and had drippy sloppy streaks over it. Like, it was nearly construction paper armor. Laughably terrible and zero effort. At the very least Chloe put in the effort to make a COMPLETE makeup, atrocious as it may have been, that was on subject. That pseudo armor sloppy outfit thing with the off-theme face sculpt was just ugh.

Oh I don't think anyone is trying to defend the "armor" I think we're all just trying to get our heads around how Chloe's wasn't right next to him. It's one thing to have a sloppy unfinished mess, another to have an unholy abomination against God.

I know the judges probably would have had a fit but I would have loved to see someone vaccuuform an entire face. It would have been the only way to get those smooth anime girl faces to not look horrifying. Sculpted like they were, they looked like they both had faces full of cystic acne covered in concealer. A vaccuuform face would have been smooth and symmetrical. Those big plastic eyes jammed unevenly into that lumpy skin were nightmare inducing.

Episode 9: "Mad Science" Airdate: March 11, 2014 Spotlight Challenge: The artists must play the role of a scientist to create an experiment gone wrong. Judging from the last episode I'm pretty certain that the contestants can fulfill the make something that looks like it went wrong requirement for this challenge.

Totally agree, Tyler is awesome and has been kicking out killer stuff all season. Luckily for Rashaad, though, Corinne made Mr. Shitslave so he's safe. She did kinda get screwed with having a loving worm while everyone else had these brutal hacksaws and giant syringes and poo poo, but yeah, she hosed up bad. I dunno how Nico keeps skating by, his paintjob consistently looks like it's been sandblasted or something.

Thought the best one was actually Corinne's sculpt. That dude just looked tortured, and the others came off as generic with no sense of pain or suffering for what was done to them.

Seems to me the best way to do leeches is a mummy-looking guy with no blood left. Better than just a dude with some lil boogers stuck on him.

Mons Hubris posted:Seems to me the best way to do leeches is a mummy-looking guy with no blood left. Better than just a dude with some lil boogers stuck on him. I thought she was going to do a mutant man-leech, like the Flukeman from X-Files. The challenge was pretty loose -- McKenzie just said that their makeups had to be "inspired by" the medical devices. She never said "these devices have to be used on your patients." So I have no idea why Corrine chose a concept that would have next to no visual impact on the stage.

I'm a little surprised that Michael Westmore didn't tell Corinne that she needed a bigger concept. But I had to laugh that she used most of her sculpting time to turn a nose into a slightly different nose and a chin into a slightly different chin.

Corrine has been skating by on a bare minimum of work with a good paint job, I don't think she could've handled anything more laborious than what she gave us. I'm just glad Rashaad is still in and hope he does something amazing soon .

iastudent posted:Did anyone happen to watch what was on after Face Off last night? My Big Fat Geek Wedding? Yeah, that was very mediocre. It looked like they had the wedding they wanted and had fun with it, but as a TV program it was so drat poor. Arranging a Geek themed wedding isn't going to be fundamentally different to arranging a standard wedding, only instead of going to Men's Wearhouse for a dreary tux get up, they go to a costume store. Find a dress, pick a location, choose decor, get in some entertainment etc etc. It's the same as most other weddings. And they treated it as such. They had the televisual fake drama of will they find a dress in the one store they've gone to???? Of course they will and it'll be the third one as there's not really time with commercials to show them deciding between a dozen or more. So the first couple have to be utterly wrong and nothing like the brief the designer was given. Is the venue going to be able seat everyone, is the whole thing going to be delayed, is the dress going to be ready on time, will the father of the bride finally join in the festivities, can we stick in more of those obnoxious talking head moments where people pretend to be reacting to something that happened a while back as if it had just occurred. Wedding TV Ad nauseum. Where they could have made it worth watching would have been to actually focus on the stuff like rehearsing the weak sword fight, finding or building the animatronic dragon, and there might have been another thing but it was all so bleak I've forgotten. Maybe they could have not pretended that it was all brought together by super wedding planner in just a few days. Just felt like schedule filler to fill the background. Very much TV by the numbers and dully insulting for it.

The Suicide Girl last season was always off in her interviews (though she just sounded learning disabled), but Corrine always sounded like she had just pounded a bottle of cough syrup and was recounting something that happened when she was a kid. Has anyone that has lasted this long had such a small range? She's the anti-Roy.

Humbug Scoolbus posted:I am so glad to see Corrine gone. She never showed any visible passion for her work. It's especially bad this season with Tyler, who seems to love every challenge so much and everything that's happening around him. No matter what happens with the show I'm sure he's guaranteed steady work for the rest of his life due to how positive and gung-ho he is about every challenge. I don't know much about their world, but I imagine being on Face/Off is about as famous as most makeup people get. I couldn't name more than 2 make-up artists that have ever worked (Rick Baker & Tom Savini), but I can think of a dozen that have been on this show over the years. I don't think I'm on the fringe with that lack of knowledge either.

Leech boy and Ribcage guy were both acting while electricity girl who asked in last looks what she should be doing just stood there. Editing I guess. I question the idea of poor taste in regards to Nico's fetus (although that face was poor taste.) It's a mad scientist horror show, not the Easter parade. No one is batting an eye at exposed ribcages and electro torture.

If he had just said she was supposed to have a creepy doll face for whatever reason, it would have been so much better. If that was his attempt at a human woman in anguish he really doesn't deserve to be on this show. The baby looked really good before he painted it, but he loving ruined it. Was that a premade prop?

I think if there had been less slippery red blood and umbilical cord twisted in her hands it wouldn't have come off so badly to the judges. Or if the baby had been a monster. Despite it being a torture challenge I could see why a mother holding her dead baby with all that blood might seem a little offensive. Proximity, ya know? The fetus eating troll didn't have the mother right there. Also, a monster baby would have been so much better and made more sense in a mad scientist challenge, like if it were a mermaid or a werewolf or had wings or something.
