Anecdotes are not data, but Michael Weinstein wrote a book about the experiences he and his son had the Air Force Academy called "With God On Our Side: One Man's War Against an Evangelical Coup in America's Military". I read a few excerpts some years ago, including one (I think) about some of the stained glass at the chapel featuring the Hand of God clutching some atomic weapon imagery. My cousin is retired from the Air Force and I know someone currently enlisted. Home of focus on the family and a bazillions copy cats their temples are amply endowed with money changers ( and bowling alleys, and movie theaters, and restaurants, and hair salons, and whatever else you need to never interact with someone not in the church ).

When I was seriously considering running off to join the Legion, I heard something similar about it. Because of its nature, the enlisted ranks are as diverse as you can get, but if you planned on trying to become an officer, you pretty much had to be Catholic, or at least willing to become Catholic, which seemed a bit odd as I'd always understood France to be rather more secular than that. But institutional cultures tend to try and preserve themselves, I guess.
