The funny thing is Earthquake actually worked a dark match in 1998 before the Golga gimmick and he looked fine and got a good reaction. There was footage of the match on YouTube at one point. I'm phone posting so I can't check right now.

They appeared to be some of the only relatively hip and cool people in wrestling who had any concept of pop culture. It's also a big part of what made ECW so cool that doesn't translate to people watching it today.

WCW always had that thing going where they did a better job of treating wrestling like a sport, which they even did better than the WWF when Russo got involved. That was actually when I got into wrestling myself and I'm pretty sure it was what made me prefer Nitro to RAW at the time.

During his WCW stint his weight was never such a problem, in part because of the touring schedule they had which was differently structured and had less travelling time involved. So obviously instead of looking at the causes when he went to WWE they wrote him off for a time as being lazy. Edit: To be fair to WWE, most of their concerns over his weight did come from worries about his health. The problem was more one of communication - Show was made to feel like he was being repeatedly punished by the head of talent relations, which wasn't helped at all but the numerous not so veiled comments made by JR in his blog over the years. Ross was notoriously bad at handling these sorts of things, his management of Mark Henry being another example of this, and Show was pretty open when he left the WWE as to how his relationship with talent relations had reached rock bottom. Apparently Vince is now much more hands on in talking to talent about these sorts of concerns and the way they manage it has shifted a great deal, particularly post Benoit. Sometimes when you have a guy with that body type and size it's hard to judge when he's put on too much weight, it's not like with Yoko where in the last few years it became increasingly obvious. You can normally tell when Show needs a lay off not by his size so much as looking at his mobility. Normally just before a lay off he'll be much less mobile in the ring and spend more time near the ropes, when he comes back he moves a lot more smoothly. Again the ethos has changed a lot. If you look at the late 90's whenever management felt someone was having problems with their weight they would be booked in such a way as to send a message, often in quite embarrassing fashion. See Vader's "I'm just a fat bastard" promo or Yoko being booked to break the ring ropes when he went for the bonsai drop (which happened after he actually did that at a house show). There were messages being sent not only to the guys involved, but also to other guys in the back, and that mindset probably ended up doing more harm than good.

When I was this age I watched both shows equally because we had a cable box that was hacked so I could record all the ppvs and re watch them over and over again. I watch WM 13 probably 10 times as a kid. One thing that I really liked about WCW aside from the obvious ten year old pleasers like Goldberg was the little guys, which WWF didn't offer much of. The Malenko Jericho fued, Alex Wright, La Parka, Kidman. These were the things that kept me interested in WCW. I really liked Taka Michinoku but I barely remember other cool little guys from that era of WWF.
