Even so, I don't see how that would be cheaper than a sending unit that threads into the same port once you get done running tubing (or is it hard line?)

Even when I tapped the stock oil-pressure port (idiot light port) for the E30, I couldn't get a sender in there. I used a tee and a length of hose to mount the sender to the block and keep the idiot light as well.

So what if it's cheaper; it's cheaper in the long run to keep hot fluid out of the cabin, especially the one of the fluids that is hardest to clean up.

It is cheaper. Take a look at Auto Meter; you're looking at like a $100 gauge with stepper motors and stuff, or $30 for a good ol' boy gauge that runs boiling oil directly into your eyes dashboard.

Guess which one of those two doesn't end up getting installed and bounces around various swap meets until it ends up on a $5 table.

I ran over a curb with my '13 Ford Focus, and now my decorative undercarriage is hanging off the driver's side. I can't just leave it, because experience shows it would bounce up and down with my car driving and I'd eventually be driving over it (not good).

If I go to the body shop, will they charge me to replace the whole front, or can I glue it back or tape or blow torch? I hate to hit up my insurance company for this, since I was in a fender bender with a kid in a grocery store parking lot in October.

Oh, see - I was expecting that the tube was something worthwhile when in fact it's some bottom-feeding teflon affair that'll explode the first time you look at it crossways. In related forum posts there was a whole lotta "well my buddy has never had a problem so why spend more money?!" because no one can figure out it's the sort of problem that, while rare, only need to happen once to be a complete clusterfuck and any precaution taken is a good one.

I'm surprised they didn't just shoot him once they asked the people he carjacked if there was anyone else in the car.

Seriously, use of lethal force would probably be justified if he's driving toward people.

I think I'm going to carry an asp or something from now on.

Not really much use from a driver's seat, though. If you're not ok with packing heat, pepper spray would work out better than a baton.

How mad were the people that managed to dodge the madman driving the wrong way down the highway towards them, only to have the police throw spike strips directly in front of their cars.

Also what's with all the unlocked doors? Just about every car I've driven in the last ~10 years auto locks the doors above ~5 kph, is this not a thing in the US?

Because they didn't realize it was a high speed chase and thought it was a standard accident where you get out and swap insurance info. And shock.

The DW is Dry Wet = sucks rear end in the snow, summer tire.
The DWS is Dry Wet Snow = all season "ok" in the snow
The Winter Extreme is exactly what it sounds like.

I used my DWS tires for the past 2 winters and there were a few occassions where I wasn't sure I was going to stop in time. Combine that with them being at about half tread, I got 15" Winter Extremes and have not had any white knuckle drives at all.

Yeah you're not going to be able to use it inside a car, never mind actually deploy it. Besides you really don't want to hit someone with a baton unless you can aim for the thigh or something.

Just make sure you have an up to date car insurance policy, pretty much the best form of self-defense for an edge case like this.

I'm inclined to believe the people unlocked their doors not realizing that he was running from the police, and instead thinking that he's coming over to exchange insurance information or something. That's the only logical explanation for that - those doors should have automatically been locked otherwise.

I don't think many keep comprehensive on their car, and a criminal literally running from the police probably doesn't have insurance at all.

Not that I'd suggest any "stand your ground" heroics but insurance is probably a giant pain in the rear end in those situations. I can't imagine how soul destroying that phone conversation would be.

Pretty sure most people are covered for theft. Here in the UK the two standards are full comp, or 3rd party, fire and theft.

Having a news / police chopper literally film someone stealing your car for a joyride is gonna be a pretty easy claim from the insurance company.

Theft is a comprehensive claim in most (all?) US states, and as such, is only covered if you have comprehensive coverage.

Yeah, comprehensive or "other than collision" depending on the state verbiage. If you didn't have it you've just out of luck, unless you can somehow collect civil damages from the party. Most cases like these it'd be like getting blood from a stone though.

Back on the topic of tires, gently caress car dealers all the way to hell.

I got a new set on order for the wife's ride, a set of midrange all seasons for the summer. All four, installed and aligned, ran a total of $360. Will get them put on the car in a few days.

Next on the list was the 100k maintenance, which I normally do at the dealer because they have a history of good work on the fluids and belts type of work.

Service guy comes out of the garage with his quote sheet and a sad faced "your tires really need replaced" story. Glance at the sheet and those pricks wanted $630 for the rubber and $130 for alignment.

What the gently caress guys, really? I know dealers rip you off but for that price they better be dipped in gold.

Well let's turn that video into an AI PSA at least. Hey AI: Go make sure you have comprehensive coverage. It's cheap and worth it. Covers break-ins and theft, vandalism, trees falling, sinkholes opening, parking lot hit and runs, etc. Mine adds about $8 a month to my policy.

It can go both ways because once you make a claim everything suddenly costs more. Depending on the fine print there's a huge class of incidents you never want to report because paying out of pocket ends up being cheaper.

Then don't make a claim for those? But if you're carjacked and your car gets hosed you're sure as hell going to be better off making a claim than not.
