I think I tend to be more tolerant than many goons of the spread of 'hugbox language' but I'm pretty sure I've found the point at which my eyes roll straight out of my head.

What gets me is that she uses the language "disrespect" in the announcement, but does not acknowledge at all the massive disrespect that baring your rear end in public shows, not to mention on a seat that 10 or 15 other players have to use.

As I've said before, Magic OP got what they deserved in the form of bad publicity for their game. Hopefully they take more away from this than "ban anyone who shows how lax we are about enforcing hygiene at our events". It is encouraging to hear about that Judge's presentation at GPDC though, sounds like it was spot on.

The WPN doesn't really do that very well, depending almost entirely on people voicing complaints before they contact a T.O. They need to implement some way in which they can find out how well their retail partners are delivering a positive experience, secret shoppers, judges. I'm not sure what the solution is but I don't think relying on people who get annoyed enough to ring them up, but not annoyed enough to quit, is really a good way to do things.

I wish people would stop strawmanning "but no one has mentioned how disrespectful showing your rear end is." Literally zero people in this thread have suggested it is ok for someone to sit with their asscrack hanging out of their pants. No one wants this. What I personally want is for people to tap the individual on the shoulder, lean in and let them know. If the person doesn't adjust themselves, then get a Judge involved. Very few people, perhaps no one, would refuse a Judge's request to pull up their pants. This solves the at least the pants issue.

I don't understand your point since doing "literal nothing" is the perfect way to describe the WPNs response to years and years of people asking "How come my LGS was allowed to run a PTQ in the filthy basement of an abandoned tuberculosis hospital"

It literally matters not at all. A new Judge Candidate at one of the stores I Judge at and TO recently went hog wild giving away prize support before he should have and just generally breaking a gently caress ton of rules. People complained, our WPN rep spoke with me for less than a minute about it.

There is absolutely zero structure or system in place to track or record these kind of problems, promote improvement, or punish constant infractions. Its not very good.

Clearly this is some sort of epidemic, since the photographer found, what, 12 whole people out of 4,304?

Judges are already empowered to deal with these situations. However, most people would rather make fun of hygiene offenders behind their backs than actually get the situation fixed.

Have you attended a Magic event? This and a million other hygiene issues are not isolated to GP Richmond. Wizards can't solve them all (like the unbelievably high percentage of players failing to wash their hands while coming out of the bathroom, loving disgusting) but some of them just require a little bit of effort from those in charge.

It's not Wizards' job to define rules on hygiene. It's up to stores/TOs to set those standards. If someone's hygiene is bad enough that it's disrupting a tournament, then the judge should be handling it.

The point is that to this point TOs are not, and have not addressed the problem, and at some point it is the responsibility of the WPN to address it and other problems with the community.

I am a Judge, and my TO is great, but I've have no clue how I would go about addressing the problem if I had an indifferent TO. Many places don't even have Judges.

Also by what logic is WOTC not allowed to establish standards for hygiene? They've established standards for speech, they've established standards for what you can have on your loving sleeves. I don't see how that can lead someone to determine "Welp, they can drat well make rules about everything else, but not hygiene because ~*ReaZonz*~

The hygiene problems probably need to be dealt with within the player community, because I don't think WotC's marketing department has the charisma needed to spin "Most of you smell bad, clean it up" into something that won't make them lose customers. I don't know if anyone would, this behavior has been tolerated for all of Magic's life. It's rare, but I've seen TOs kick people out of tournaments for smelling horrible, and the ironic thing is that maybe this whole ordeal will force TOs to take notice more.

I also read a Tweet from Helene that was something along the lines of "Dress codes vary widely from country to country, so it's a tall order to write up policy."

I think a new set of Promos, FTV's, Duel Decks could help out with the awareness effort.

Meanwhile, a second campaign could extol the virtues of cleanliness. FTV: Hygiene. Featuring cards like Scrubland, Wipe Clean, Wash Out, and Urza's Hot Tub.

But wait, there's more, we could do Duel Decks: Clean vs Dirty. The dirty side would get cards like Engineered Plague, Drown in Filth, Befoul, etc.

The list was posted a week or two ago, it seems like a good deck to buy if you need a few of the cards on it. As an actual duel deck? Jace's gameplan I think will beat Vraska's a lot. I don't even see newer players being good enough to handle playing Jace's deck either, so if you're trying to teach someone you're stuck between giving them the better deck they won't know the nuances of playing or the deck they can actually play but you're gonna crush them with tempo.

IIRC it has level scaling, in that it'll bring you more and more broken decks until you start to lose, then slowly bring it down. At least that's what I've found

If the games are 1v1, you may want to look at the French banlist, which is focused on 1v1 play. I know that the Bird Wizard guy from the 2013 Commander decks is banned, so that's a reasonable starting point if you have good Bant stuff.

Middling, I've got a decent collection I can start trading off if need be. I currently have a fairly strong but very slow Gaddock Teeg deck that I figure I'll play at the first few nights until I get a better idea of what is going on. I'll peep Wanderer decks and I'll consider 5c combo stuff but I'm not sure how well it would work. (Unless Judas is right and wanderer isn't very good.)

Also, the only concrete info I got out of the shop keep was that it was explicitly not 1v1 commander. I used to play w/ french banlist and if I were doing that it would be way easier to find The Best Deck.
