Panthers are only trying to replace 1900 yards and 14tds with three dudes. It's not an impossible task with a couple of cheaper dudes and a draft pick. Austin, Avant, Rice, Sanders LaFell, Jones, Britt, all still floating around. I'll worry if they open camp without guys, Nicks would've been nice, but what can ya do.

Pats, I am so pleased with how FA has gone so far Get a Center (Really anything would be an upgrade), make nice with vince (NESN was reporting he might actually be OK with restructuring now) and get a WR. D-line and TE should be addressable in the draft.

Dallas is playing with nickels and dimes by this point. They just barely can't afford what Denver is giving Ware, but I'd guess Peppers will get a decent amount less, giving them just enough money to sign rookies and maybe a depth player that isn't loving Ernie Sims. The margin for spending is just that thin. I imagine that Dallas thinks it must do everything it can to keep in competition due to Romo's age. It's unfortunate they're so blindly incompetent at going through with this train of thought, but I hardly see past failures stopping them here. Either way, they need any help they can get on that defensive line.

NC-17 posted:What am I missing here. Why would they dump Ware to save money, and then turn around and give it all to a player who's three years older? You're missing the fact that nobody has even mentioned a dollar amount. People keep thinking Peppers is going to sign for $10m a year or some poo poo when nothing has come out. If he gets a contract along the lines of Dwight Freeney or Osi Umenyiora then it will be more reasonable. Obviously if he does get $10m a year that's too much, but even if that's the case Ware's cap hit was $16m this season and Peppers' would be lower. But I doubt Peppers gets that much because he's older and he's been on the market longer. The only reason they're looking at guys like Melton and Peppers is because they have familiarity with Marinelli's scheme. The starters for the defensive line next year are slated to be Jeremy Mincey-Tyrone Crawford-Terrell McClain-George Selvie, and only one of those guys took snaps for the team last year. They need at least one respectable player on the line.

TubeStank posted:Glad to see Raji got a "prove it" type contract. My guess is the line will be D. Jones, Raji, Daniels this season. Raji has suffered since moving from NT, so putting him back there will probably help a lot. Plus it's a huge re-do for him this year because the interest seemed pretty quiet. No way we grab Daniels or Hester. Thompson's going to draft another TE to develop behind Quarless/Bostick and Hester is old and a kick return specialist, something that Ted Thompson notoriously Doesn't Give a drat about. With Raji signed, we're at about $20 million left in terms of salary cap room. Given that a quarter of that will be used up for rookies, that leaves $15 mil for Nelson and Cobb's extension. Guessing that those two average about $8 mil per year each, that would be another $4 million for Nelson and another $7 million for Cobb on top of what they're already costing, which would leave about $4 mil in cap room for the Packers to use. I'd love to see Thompson sign a cheap veteran center (Montgomery? De La Puente?) as "oh poo poo, Tretter is actually terrible" insurance along with either Shaun Phillips, Calvin Pace or Chris Clemons. Spencer or Ayers could also be interesting. Hell, if everyone else keeps undervaluing James Jones, maybe him. Given Boykin's development and how deep the WR rookie class is, though, I'm sure we'll draft a mid-round guy at receiver instead. In reality, Thompson's probably going to roll it over to next year to help with Bulaga's extension or whatever. Another exciting free agency in the books!

I would love to see the Packers draft Dri Archer as a kicker returner if they can get him later in the draft, around rounds 4-5. I'm not sure he'll be a reliable receiver at 5'8", but his speed is incredible. Best case scenario, he's a not-so-tough Darren Sproles or Dexter McCluster, but worse case scenario he's a quality punt and kick returner. E: Actually, worst case scenario is he gets broken in half the first time he takes a hit, but there is potential if he says healthy. E2: eh, guess this is wrong thread for draft prospects. The only reason why I wouldn't be surprised if we grab Daniels or Hester is that nobody seems to be interested in either and nobody is grabbing Jones. With Boykin we can sign either Cobb or Nelson to longer contracts--and Nelson wants to stay in GB from everything I've seen (as much as I love Cobb he hasn't indicated anything as explicit as Jordy has)--so I think your figures are pretty accurate on them. I don't think any of the centers are really all that worth signing right now. For whatever reason everyone staff-wise seems really sold on Tretter, but unless we can get a veteran minimum or close to it there's not a chance Ted will grab someone. They're really high on Bostick and Quarless showed flashes of being good last season, so maybe he'll develop. Burnett will get restructured unless he puts up a big year. Not expecting splashes, but we need a kick returner and we need a better receiving tight end. If we can grab either for cheap Ted will.

TubeStank posted:Not expecting splashes, but we need a kick returner and we need a better receiving tight end. If we can grab either for cheap Ted will. Yeah, I guess what I'm saying is that nobody is interested in Hester because he'll turn 32 this year and he's a pure returner who offers nothing offensively. What in Ted Thompson's tenure as GM makes you think that a really old kick returner is going to be appealing? He's the anti-TT free agent. Thompson barely cares about special teams at all and he gives absolutely zero fucks about the quality of the return game in the particular. As for Daniels, I could have seen us signing him at the start of free agency, but not now that we've resigned Quarless to be our versatile TE. Packers coaching staff has loved Bostick's receiving potential since 2012, Daniels just doesn't fit in anywhere and he'd be a waste of cap space and a roster spot. Incidentally, if TT does end up going for a center (or Phillips/Pace/Clemons/Spencer/Ayers/Jones), he'd probably still have just enough left to resign Jolly or Pickett for the veteran's minimum, which would be fine by me.

I think a lot of athletes are over-confident in their own abilities and believe that if they were on the opposing team, they would make them win. Add the fact that the team they are leaving doesn't value them as highly as they value themselves, and you have a player with a chip on their shoulder that wants to prove their old team wrong by going to a division rival. And sometimes it just doesn't matter who they play for, it is about who is paying the most.
