My LGS wants to run a Modern FNM, which I would totally go out of the way to play at, so maybe I'll brew something up. e: ^^^ Thanks. I have three, so maybe I'll get there

Some of my friends have told me that phantom sealed has basically the lowest competition level of all events that give out QPs, so maybe try those if you're struggling to get to 15.

The best* way to get QPs is to play in daily events. The EV (expected value) of these events are usually positive, which means on average you win more in prizes than you spend on the entry fees. You get 1 QP for going 3-1 and 3 QPs for going 4-0. Block Constructed and Standard are of course the most accessible constructed formats, but after a recent prize restructuring the sealed daily events are much closer to EV neutral. This site is great for looking at the EV of events. Oh and this month the promo card is Lion's Eye Diamond, which is a case of an MTGO card being more expensive than the real life version. *In the no cost sense.

Speaking of Theros Block Constructed this deck is currently the bees knees. Once you get a Sphinx online it's just a matter of sitting on it till you have counter spells up and filtering through your deck for any answers you need as they come. Elspeth is terrible against a Sphinx and Elspeth is arguably the most played wincon in most Block decks. Stormbreath Dragon being the other wincon a lot of decks use and just so happens Sphinx blocks Dragon all day(at least until it monstrosities.)

I love Prognostic Sphinx because it's deceptively good. No one really freaks about a 3/5 flyer and the ability to deep-fix your draws is really underestimated. I don't believe it will last too long though. It took people a while to catch up with Nightveil Specter...

Nightveil specter is only good because of devotion though (and because nighthawk rotated). In a vacuum the Sphinx is much better on its own.

So what's going with the hype on bitterblossom now? On mtgprice I can see them going for $43 on TCGlow and avg 60 but on MCM I see them for 17 euros. So I am a little confused.

So I've been watching some tournament coverage recently, and have noticed that almost every player had a tendency to rapidly shuffle/rearrange the cards in their hand. Any reason besides other players do it so it must be cool?

For most players, it's somewhere between unconscious habit and compulsion.

The shuffling thing really annoys me because I feel like a lot of people do it because they see pros do it, who saw other pros do it. There is no reason to shuffle them around your hand like that, especially if you have like, 2 cards.

I'm just putting this prediction here for posterity: Damnation will be reprinted in Journey into Nyx. Prove me wrong e: I forgot how much I hate esper control and its absurd mana bases and I forgot that verdict will still be in standard when JiN comes out, never mind me. Damnation for M15 then. In all seriousness I do want to see Damnation again, that card is :kickinrad: ungulateman fucked around with this message at 03:21 on Mar 19, 2014 |

Damnation will not be printed in Journey into Nyx. Black has enough pseudo-wrath effects as well as a mini-mutilate, which already makes it one of the top-tier decks to beat. Damnation just doesn't make sense.

It's got the no-regen clause. I say it won't be.

It's also not very adherent to the color pie, is it? Not too sure about that, but I think black doesn't get sweepers like that, which is why Damnation was in planar chaos

They should really make the no-regen thing an on-again, off-again thing for Standard, like other power level things. They probably won't, though. (Is there even anything in Standard right now or recently that makes it relevant in a non-corner-case situation? The big thing I remember is Thrun and I'm drawing a blank on anything else that's caused a big regeneration splash.)

# ? Mar 19, 2014 03:00 |

They're not going to make 8 4-mana wraths in the same standard as they try and push the power level on creatures to get them played more. Also Golgari Charm is not irrelevant. Other creatures like Experiment One are situationally relevant.

So would Maro, for that matter. I would think black would be the most likely color to get sweepers. But yeah, if they give Esper 8 4-mana board wipes, one of which is unregenable, I'm quitting Standard. I withdraw my previous statement. On a more interesting topic, ugh why is Voice of Resurgence A: a mythic and B: expensive even by mythic standards? (rhetorical question) Like, it's GW's only good answer to control and board wipes (Rootborn Defenses is okay but why not play RD AND Voice?) but of course it creates a dichotomy of 'you have money therefore you win FNM' and 'you do not therefore you lose FNM'.

Probably because it's a pretty great 2-drop for Pod and I think it sees Legacy play as well (maybe not)? Similar to Deathrite Shaman if it was unbanned in Modern.

ungulateman posted:I withdraw my previous statement. It's a mythic in a small set, and it's just about the only good card in that set. (Aetherling is also pretty good, but between only being a rare, and only being a 2-of, and only in Standard, there's enough supply to meet demand). So it carries the majority of the value from opening that set.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was also partially a holdover from when it was an $80 card.
