I'll admit, I took a good 2 months off when the Trayvon Martin verdict hit, because I knew what it was going to be and was just not emotionally prepared to read so much of it. But aside from that, in all this time, nothing has made me want to scream at my monitor so much as the way they talk about science. Science is not TRYING to prove any specific thing. They're trying to figure out what happened, based on the evidence. If they dig and dig and dig, and behind the big bang they find God, I'll be right there, cheering them on. If someone finds evidence that evolution is wrong, I'll be excited to find out what that evidence says is more correct. Just the idea that science is "trying to disprove God" or has an agenda about anything beyond truth just infuriates me.

That school-based conspiracy in regards to ADHD is crazy as poo poo. As a teacher I can safely tell you we are informed to -never- make suggestions to parents on medical issues about students. The reason being is we can be held financially responsible (IE the teacher would have to personally pay for treatment). It always, always, always, has to come from the parents. At least that's how it is in Iowa.

Crashbee posted:What's the reasoning behind this? Because we're not qualified to make diagnoses' like that. We can tell them our observations, but we can't actually come to any conclusions. That's up to parents to take them to qualified doctors to do that. As to why we have to pay for it if we do overstep and make medical suggestions? I'm not sure.

I think we can source it to "school admins making poo poo up to scare teachers." It's certainly a pernicious idea that non-professionals should feel free to suggest diagnoses. I've seen it happen many times, I'm glad that at least one school in Iowa is doing something about it (by spreading bad information, but still).

I am an elementary school special ed teacher and I have heard similar poo poo from parents who don't want to believe diagnoses. It's basic "boys will be boys" mixed with the extra burn of facing up to issues with the product of your loins. The reality is that intervening in the education of a child who is having trouble connecting the dots is a huge investment in time and emotional resources on the part of the teachers and staff involved. It's not an easy decision to label a kid for life and I have never seen it done in a cavalier way. There is nothing to cash in on, but folks seem to believe that filing paperwork to cover a shoe-string special ed staff is the ship we all prayed would come in to deliver us from... something.

The way they try to remake God in their own image is infatuating. If science can show us that something as amazing as the big bang or evolution happened, then it's evidence of God's work. The average Freeper is a 60 something white male from the south, with little to no higher education. A scientist is someone who has decided to learn how to be a scientist, and learnth the skills needed to do so, at great effort and expense. Everything they come up with has to be peer researched. God is the all knowing and all powerful creator of reality. His existence and power is simply so far beyond human understanding we can't understand it (Isaiah 55:8). Science is just a study of the natural world (which is God's creation) in order so we can learn more and become wise (Proverbs 3:13). We aren't meant to blindly follow whatever we're told, but to question, learn and grow (1 Thessalonians 5:21). When types shout down those who try to understand the universe are pretty much disrespecting God's creation, but trying to bring it down to their level, which is "I don't understand it, therefore God can't have done it", which is the exact opposite of what the Bible teaches! When I learn about science, and the universe, and how incredibly old, large and complex it is, it helps me appreciate God more. Freepers try to remake God in their own image, with no compassion, understanding or insight. Could you imagine a Freeper going to the cross, for example? They'd probably complain about having to die for liberals. That's just my thoughts, really. Science is another way to understand God's creation, and it's a gift we're privileged to have - wisdom is a gift from God, according to the Bible, after all. Yet Freepers want to just ruin it. Sorry for the wall of text, it's just a pet peeve of mine.

It's like that joke about the man stranded on a desert island. A small sailboat goes by, and stops and offers to help, and the man says "No, God will save me." Then a fishing ship stops by and offers to help, and he again says "No, God will save me." Finally, a huge cruise ship sees him, stops, tries to rescue him, and he says "No, God will save me." The man dies on the desert island, goes to up to the pearly gates, and says "God, why didn't you save me?" God replies, "I sent a sailboat, a fishing boat, and even a cruise ship! What more could you ask for?" I feel like that joke, which is pretty silly on its surface, explains more about these anti-science "bible-thumpers" than I ever would've expected when I first heard it.
