The story is that Jesus was asked if it was lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason. Jesus responded that it is written that the two shall become one flesh and to let no one separate what God joined together. Their response was "But Moses said you could divorce your wife!" and Jesus responded "It was because you guys were stubborn idiots so Moses let you do it, but I'm telling you if you divorce your wife for any reason but unfaithfulness and marry someone else then you're an adulterer."

Look at this idiot not knowing anything about papal infallibility. It don't work like that, man. The Pope can only claim infallibility when speaking ex cathedra on theological matters, and even then there's a narrow band of those that could be declared "infallible". This is a big fuckin' deal, and in the entire history of the Roman Catholic Church, it's probably been invoked less than 10 times.

A couple pages back, but "the big bang didn't happen." Isn't a creationist book. It argues that cosmic background radiation is also explainable through high energy plasmas. It's wrong, but scientifically wrong, not religiously wrong.

Also worth noting: the USSR wouldn't be invading the Ukraine because it was already part of the USSR. Seriously, it was half of Eurasia. As noted, Afghanistan is a much better comparison, and even they didn't hesitate out of fear from the US, because back then it was just a giant factionalized backwater poppy field that no one cared about.

No there isn't. A strong military presence in Afghanistan would let them easily project power over the developed oil fields and transport networks for said oil. That was the point of it - they were getting hammered economically by the Saudis cranking the spigot wide open, and by giving them influence over OPEC due to military positioning they could have dialed back production to strengthen their internals by holding cheap domestic oil they could export and push the US back towards the oil crisis years by restricting supply

The larger point of ridiculing the idea of the USSR cowering tame and submissive before Reagan's America or whatever does stand, of course.

A more apt analogue would be if US forces decided to 'liberate' the city of Guantanamo and surroundings and hold a 'referendum' on joining USA, as Guantanamo Bay is on rent to United States just like the Russian base in Sevastopol.

I love the idea some people are entertaining that it would be somehow possible for the US to fight a land war against Russia. It really demonstrate the degree to which some people have a view of the US military more in line with a CoD game than actual reality.

The US could probably eject Russian troops from Crimea and follow that up by sinking the Black Sea Fleet and bombing Russian military bases in the area. But that's not going to happen because the US is more likely to send troops to invade the Moon than we are to invade Crimea. But, yeah, the idea of invading Russia proper is sheer lunacy.
