There are two reasons that these stats are very important. Firstly, they are repeatable over the season. According to the work that James Grayson has done they are the most repeatable stats over the course of a season � see here and here (and he has used a lot more data than I will for now). Secondly, they provide the strongest indication of how many points a side will accumulate over the remainder of the season. See the same links.

Ratios provide more insight than simple totals. A side may have the most shots over the course of a season, but it may mean little if they also concede the most shots of any side. Alternatively, a top side may not record a large amount of shots themselves, but excel in denying their opponents chances to score. S-R and SoT-R provide a much better indicator of how a side will perform over a long period. League position at this stage of the season can be heavily dependent upon luck (more below), but looking at these stats can allow us to predict how teams will perform over the whole twenty-seven weeks once the impact of luck is reduced.

Personally, I�d prefer to focus on SoT-R. The guys at StatsBomb use it as their focus and Liverpool supporter and blogger Andrew Beasley has done some great work that shows its importance to a side�s overall position in the table at the end of the season. After nine rounds there is already a reasonably strong correlation between SoT-R and PPG (points per game) for A-League sides.
