They just kept trying to treat my lungs spazzin' out with inhalers and stuff. Towards the end of the... months, I think it was, they were down to stuff like cystic fibrosis as a possibility. Nothing lifts the spirits like, "Hey teen, you may have a fatal disease!" Wasn't that, but I dreaded that I would never get better... then I just did. Chalked it up to some mystery disease until I heard that commercial. Guess doctors in my area are pretty bad, or they were in 2002. It's on the rise now, so I really hope they've gotten better about identifying it since.

That's a mega-citation needed there, buddy. I just tried verifying it myself and even traveling through the usual suspects of anti-welfare wingnut sites, I could find no corroboration of any such statistic, even someone just repeating it without verification. I'm perusing my way through the Moynihan Report about black families (released 1965) and it only concerns babies born out of wedlock and not single-parent households (not the same thing). But considering that the whole report is predicated on a crisis of increasing broken-home rates in the black community, I think we can officially declare this "7 percent" bullshit to be bullshit.

The analogy, as best I understand, is that both the anti-gay baker and the Rutgers college students are protesting against things they find offensive, but in the former case the offended party is being forced to disregard their moral objections, but in the latter the offended party are themselves forcing their moral objection to be accommodated.

Saw this on reddit (yeah yeah) Apparently people are posting these around Philly. According to the OP it isn't even managers or store owners, just random people going up and posting them on WaWas and other markets. I want to say that someone should make a concerted effort to explain to the public just how "welfare" works and what is entailed in it, but I know no one would listen.

So tonight a friend posted a picture of a social security card next to something that just said welfare state. The caption went something along the lines of We keep hearing about how Social Security is running out of money. Under the part that said Welfare State it said, "How come we never hear about welfare running out money? What's interesting is the first group worked for their money, but the second group didn't." He followed this up with a "Good point." I said, no this is not a good point. When he asked why, I went the simple route of just saying that Social Security is welfare, he countered with a "I can't collect social security until I retire. Am I wrong?" I responded with this " No, until you hit a certain age, it's welfare for the elderly. There is also the inconvenient fact the people forget when complaining about welfare is ever since Clinton's "reforms" to welfare you cannot be unemployed and collect a "welfare" check. Also social security doesn't work like that, you didn't work for the money in a social security check, it's not tied to any specific account, nor are you limited by how much money you've paid through taxes when you collect it." He hasn't said anything yet, but having some better argument ammunition would be nice.

Under the part that said Welfare State it said, "How come we never hear about welfare running out money? What's interesting is the first group worked for their money, but the second group didn't." You can also bring up the fact that part of the problem of "social security running out" is that the payroll tax that feeds into it was cut by Bush, the extended by Obama. Even after that the fund will just stop running at a surplus (based on incurred interest from borrowing against the fund). That's not the biggest reason (more people living longer is the major factor as far as I know), but it doesn't help. On top of that though, the program will just run at a deficit when "the money runs out" as in the payroll tax won't fulfill the funds obligation. Now (I think) the government has no obligation to keep paying for the remainder, but you can bet your sweet rear end that in 2025-30 (when the deficit is supposed to start) it will become a campaign issue and even conservative elderly folk are going to demand the government pay for the program's short falls. Also if you want to go the snarky route you can just tell him he's already receiving welfare assuming he got a tax refund, or got a tax credit for having certain vehicles, having a kid, or that his parents got welfare for claiming him as a dependent, or any number of other things that people don't realize are "welfare". If he ends up going with the "Well it was my money in the first place!" in regards to the tax refund argument you can try to point out that his taxes are just compensation for using the governments roads, being covered by emergency services (on the state level), and many more public services that he uses every day and relies on. Let him know he'd pay just as much if not more on "privately owned" roads and to private security and Fire/EMS services if the government didn't run them. There is also historical support that argument as well. So he's saving money in the long run. If it gets to this point though he'll probably talk about not having a "choice" in joining society and thus the rules and obligations are thrust upon him without consent and are "slavery" or some such (The argument being that a private pure free market society lets you choose who to do business with at least, even if it is more expensive). You can either just sever then or tell him he wouldn't have the choice to exist in the first place so it's a moot point. But honestly if he argues this point he's beyond worth dealing with.
