If you absolutely must play Dead Souls then yeah I'd recommend it solely for Majima's role in it. He knows this is the only way a psycho like him will ever be playable in Yakuza and he goes 110% in it.

The Daigo stuff was probably the highlight of the game for me. I loved the game in spite of how awful it played mostly because the writers kind of went crazy with the characters since they knew the story wasn't going to be canon.

Dead Souls is fun when you remember that it isnt a shooter, its a beat em up with guns instead of fists.

I watched a little bit of the Giant Bomb Quick Look for Y:DS. Someone compared it to RDR: Undead Nightmare, and it does come off like DLC for Y4. It's pretty cheap, and they said in the Quick Look that it's not really hard, so maybe I'll give it a shot. Incidentally, I found out that the Kamurocho in Yakuza is based off of the Kabukicho district in Shinjuku. However, there is a Kamurocho located in Gifu. Is there a reason why they didn’t just call it Kabukicho?

For those who've given up hope, Sega of Japan is discounting Yakuza 1 & 2 HD on the PSN. Price is 1886 yen (plus tax), starts today and runs for 23 days.

I went and started reading today and discovered just how many characters in Isin are based on/named after real historical persons, which of course makes me wonder how many other allusions I've been missing in these games. Such dense games. Anyway, Sanders, is there a way to cheese the casino in this game to get mad ryo?

I doubt they'd spend the extra money on moving all the assets to PS4 even if they did get around to localizing Y5. There just aren't enough consoles in the wild for it to make sense, especially since 4 did really poorly despite the ps3 being pretty decently rooted when it finally came out. As much as I love Yakuza, I don't think I'd be willing to spend $400 just to play a slightly-better looking version of a 2+ year old game.

So I finished up Yakuza: Dead Souls a few days ago, and I have to say that it wasn’t too bad. The aiming system is kind of weird, but I found that it’s pretty easy to adapt to. The trick I found was to quickly tap L2 so you snap your aim quickly to the next enemy's weak point. Something that I did notice early on is that the game suffers from slowdown when there are too many things on-screen, which can be annoying in spots. Having played Y4 & Dead Souls, I was thinking about picking up either Y1 next, as I’d like to play through the rest of the series in order.

No way, Y1 is still sweet as hell. I just played the HD version a few months ago. Basically the only way its inferior to the newer games mechanically is how Kiryu won't track enemies that move side to side during combat, necessitating keeping your combos shorter.

Also the load times are absurd on an actual PS2, but other than that it totally owns. Yakuza 2 is even better, arguably the best in the series.

That's why you install the game to your PS2's hard drive. Your PS2 does have a hard drive that you install games to, doesn't it? I think that the opening of Yakuza 1 and the ending are really effective but the game play improvements that the series went through over time make the middle kind of rough to go back to. On the other hand, if someone is coming off of the dead and hasn't played any of them, it's a fine place to start. Random Stranger fucked around with this message at 06:00 on Mar 22, 2014 |

Can't really be helped; PS2 network adapters (and for that matter original-size PS2s) and IDE hard drives are both in short supply and adapting them for SATA properly will basically ruin the network adapter for sale. Early Slims had power and signal to the IDE pins but no actual connections; there were solder kits around to put a hard drive bay under the PS2. Later than that and you're stuck with USB 1.1, which is fun* with FMV. ... Actually, the very latest PS2s couldn't be softmodded, only chipped. At least PCSX2 is in a pretty good place now.
