Probably not one of GiPs favorite people but Robert Fisk's "The Great War for Civilization" is an amazing read in and of itself but really goes into the Iran/Iraq war with some first hand experience. Very big book but you will find yourself putting it down quite often and just thinking "gently caress......"

Fisk is a lovely pro-Assad hack these days, but yeah, that book is fascinating, if horribly depressing. It seems like there wasn't a hosed up event in the Middle East or Central Asia that he wasn't there for.
