Thanks for the suggestions. Learning craps and/or Pai Gow would've been great but there just wasn't enough time. My two days in Vegas have taught me that you either need a lot of money (from my Eastern European perspective anyway) or you need to plan and prepare very well ahead. We failed on both counts and didn't enjoy the city really.

Thanks, looks like if I do do this, it will definitely include VoF.

Here's what I put together:

1) Rent a car in Vegas, head east on I-15 into the Mojave. Right on Valley of Fire Highway. Drive to Atlatl Rock (Valley of Fire State Park). Brief walk around to view petroglyphs.
2) Continue onto White Dome (still VoF). A longer hike (1 mile) around White Mound and view more petroglyphs.
3) Continue down VoF Highway and turn south on Northshore Rd. Drive down to Stewarts Point. Park car; hike .4 mile to water's edge, take a dip in slightly-radioactive Lake Mead.
4) Head back along Lake Mead's northshore road on our way back.
5a*) (Scenic?) Take Lake Mead Blvd back into Vegas
5b*) (not as scenic?) Take Northshore Rd/West Lake Mead Parkway back into Vegas

Questions:
- Does anyone know anything about Stewarts Point that I should know about? Good place to swim/bad place to swim? I'm not looking to lounge about, just a spot to get wet and do some swimming. We're a pretty active bunch and can handle minimal climbing in and out of the water.
- Is 5a more scenic than 5b? On Googlemaps it looks like it goes through more interesting topography.

Total round trip without stopping is 150 miles, 3.5 hours. Including stops and unexpected surprises, I'm liberally putting the entire trip at 7 hours. We would be bringing our own food for lunch and snacks.

We had a great meal coming back from the VoF trip at a place called Iron Skillet. It's on I-15, by the LV Speedway. Nice atmosphere and a rich and varied all you can eat buffet for $11.50.

Sounds like you are done, but for anyone reading this in the future, you don't even have to learn Pai Gow, you can just hand your cards to the dealer and ask them to be set the "house way" and they will do it for you.

And to the money thing, you really don't. You can gamble at a rate of maximum loosing $20/hour at video poker if you don't go as fast as you can. You can go on a bad run on Pai Gow but it's hard. You could sit at a 1/2 poker table and just put in the blinds when they come around, never play anything but AA and it would probably be $20/hour.

If you are nervous about sitting down at any table you don't know the rules too, start at 10am when there is no one there and the dealer can have time to explain, most of them are glad. You don't want to be slowing down action Friday night at 11p.

And if you really didn't want to gamble you could go to Freemont, buy cheap rear end beer from those gift stores and walk around and look at people.

Yes, Vegas is more fun if you have a bunch of money to burn, but you can get by on a couple hundred / day.

fake edit: pro tip. If you are a really cheap bastard you can buy beer from CVS and leave it on ice in your room or liquor from the liquor store. Backpack or pit stop as you wish.

The Walgreens built into the Venetian is my best friend when it comes to keeping a little bit in the room. And bringing a flask never hurt for takeaway purposes, either.

How do I convince myself and the guys I'm going with that a stop at the Double Down would be worth it? I'd like to see it on this, my third time to Vegas, but I wonder if I haven't already been to enough similar bars to just skip it. I frequent a decent number of dive-rear end stickered up loud grungy bars back home, so would I be missing out if we didn't go?

I booked my trip for the first weekend in April, I will be there all day Friday and Saturday. Do I have any chance of picking up 3 tickets to Absinthe from the box office or should I just order them online? I don't really want to give ticketmaster any business but I also would like to check out the show.

Try some of these options to bypass ticketmaster, I don't know what site I used last time I went years ago but it was fine.

Also this trip is going to be mostly about drinking, what other places are required that I should go to. I am thinking: Laundry Room, downtown cocktail room, vesper, and the cosmo chandelier secret room.

I'm going to Las Vegas as part of a 14 strong stag do soon and as part of that the organiser has booked a table (I think) at Tryst (I think) on a Thursday for around $2000 minimum spend.

First off all what does this entitle you to? What are the drinks prices for example? Using my experience from the UK and a bit of simple maths I reckon $2000 gets you about 2 1.5l bottles of mid-range vodka (Smirnoff etc) at UK prices (which is hilarious really). I don't know how true this would be, does anyone have experience of how much drinks cost in Las Vegas?

Can anyone explain that kind of experience, because I have never been to the US and have no idea waht to expect, but also don't want to be ripped off!

Your organizer is dumb for picking Tryst of all clubs, the rest is pretty much correct. You're really getting a decent price as normally for table service it's about 1 bottle per 3-4 people. Bottles typically start around $500 + tax and tip. It's the busy season here in Vegas now as all the pool parties are set to open and it's Spring Break for the college kids.

Why is picking Tryst dumb out of interest? Is it just bad or something? Also going to a Pool Party at Wet Republic on Friday next week, good or bad decision?

Also the organiser has booked a limo to Sapphire's strip club and free entry on Saturday evening, what can we expect here (prices of drinks, dances etc.) and what kind of etiquette is expected of someone like myself who has absolutely no interest in any dances or really going to a strip club at all but just wants to have some drinks? I've only ever been to strip clubs in Bangkok and the atmosphere wasn't really my cup of tea tbh. I've heard people who just sit in strip clubs drinking are pretty much anathema so I don't really know what to do about that.

It's bad. There are much better options on a Thursday. Wet Republic is a great decision.

I like Rhino over Sapphire, but that's me. I can get you a deal on bottles at either one which is way better than buying drinks for $20 each. Dances are $20 each on the floor, $100 for 3 songs VIP, $200 for a half hour and $400 for an hour, typically the VIP rooms come with a drink minimum as well based on time. Vegas strip clubs are much different than anywhere else in the world. If you don't want a dance, don't be afraid to say no to the girls, it's one of the few times in our lives we get to be on the other end of the rejection, so enjoy it.

Hi, so I'm in the US after a very very impulsive decision and am looking to visit Vegas for a few days. I will be by myself and LV will be the last stop on my trip... I'm still not sure if I should stay 2 nights or 3, however I am pretty sure that I will be playing quite a bit of poker and some of the other casino games with low buy-ins.

My main question is what hotel should I stay at? Right now I am stuck between the Bellagio and Aria, both are at a similar price so I don't really lean anyway budget wise, just not sure about the overall experience, I do appreciate a fast in room wifi connection though as I do need to Video chat work every day for a while. I also noticed that the Wynn and Wynn encore is a lot more expensive, but I am willing to consider splurging there if it's really worth it.

What restaurants are a must to see? I will not have any suits with me, so I'm not interested in dressing up to eat, and more importantly as a single guy what are some decent clubs for me to check out? I will also be going to the spearmint rhino to see what the fuss is all about...

So yeah, single guy travelling to las vegas for 2 or 3 nights, need help with my hotel choice and dinner / clubbing options.

Just back from another 72 hour bender there. Notes from this time around:

The Laundry Room - Maybe whoever was there before was good, but the gentleman tending the bar now (Dan) is every bit the professional as well. I enjoyed myself, Dan makes a great drink, and the setting is nice. Though they should do something about that weird graffiti wall. And yes, drinks are $15 each. This is Vegas.

Marquee - Stayed at Cosmo, so going here was a no-brainer. I had fun. Place was absolutely packed on Monday night, mostly in a good way. Hot, good looking people everywhere and a whole lotta boom. For some reason I expected it to be bigger. Only had to pay for one dude out of 3, as each room gets 2 dudes comped entry. And no waiting in line. But Monday was actually the second night we went. Saturday, our first night, was also decent, but the place cleared out pretty early compared to what I'd expected (around 3 AM) and we left soon after that. Weirdly Saturday was also free for all 3 of us... Whatever. The pool area was also open that night, and was a nice semi-escape into fresh air. I'd probably come back here even if I weren't a hotel guest, but I absolutely would if I were to stay at Cosmo again.

Cosmopolitan - Didn't game here at all, but our room was pretty dope. Prices were pretty much in line with other properties in the area after paying a few bucks for an upgrade. The views were pretty sweet, and having a balcony makes Vegas 100x better. Smoking a cig at the end of the night looking out over the Strip and the lights after Marquee was a great feeling. Staff was attentive, friendly, and often said "Hello" just when walking around. I would love to find a way to get a room here discounted a bit, because I'd happily stay here again.* The Bamboo pool, open weekends, was perfectly sized and chill for this 80+ degree weekend we got lucky with.

*It's actually a bit rich for my blood, but splurging in Vegas is almost always worth it in my experience.

Holstein's - Good burgers, some good craft beers on draft too. The milkshake, while good, might've been overrated a bit. Got the Steakhouse burger, loved every bite of it. Prices were right in line with major city "craft burger" joints, which was actually pleasantly surprising.

Secret Pizza - Cheap (by Cosmo standards) afternoon snack place, perfect for sopping up the booze we drank poolside all afternoon. Legit NY style pizza, but with way better sauce. Get the roasted tomatoes added to your toppings. The staff here was also awesomely friendly. $5 slices. Yes, there are cheaper places not terribly far away for cheap pizza, but this place was still delicious. And I got to finish my slice in my room with more good beer. Wouldn't go out of my way for it, but would most def vouch for its quality.

e: Lotus of Siam - Third solid A+++++ would Thai again rating I've given this place. Split a Singha or get one all to yourself and start ordering.

Tom kha kai - spicy chicken coconut milk soup - awesome. Probably my favorite part of the meal.
Nam Phrik Hed - mushroom dip with veggies - a dark horse at our meal. Lighter and pretty refreshing. I think we found it on one of the dinner parts of the menu, and I think I would've rather had it as an appetizer. I'm sure it could've been ordered as one.
Crispy duck over drunken noodle - buddy of mine ordered this. Blah blah don't order drunken noodle at Lotus... wrong. This was great in every way. The veggies were fresh, and the noodles vinegary and salty and delish. Oh, and the duck - fatty as all get-out and un-freakin-real. For the price, this is the cheapest best duck I've ever tasted.
Khao soi - got it with beef. This is the third year in a row I think we've ordered this because it's so drat good. Reminds me of a Thai goulash.

Julian Serrano - overpriced tapas place in Aria. Some of the dishes were spot on authentic, others were oversauced in traditional American style. The tuna carpaccio and the octopus stood out. Funny enough, I think the food was pretty much exactly the same level in quality as the strip mall tapas place whose name I'm forgetting out there in Vegas. Anyone remember it? I'd sooner go back there than JS.

and for craps:
Casino Royale - While always a dump, this place has hit some kind of weird new low for craps by going down to only one table. Not that there was a second one somewhere just not staffed, but rather there's only one actual, physical table in the whole joint now. It was packed nonstop, and their minimum stayed at $5 even on a Monday early evening. The novelty of a $3 min craps table on the Strip was half the reason to come here, and that's gone. I'll come back and see in a year if they've changed this, but as of now, I have no reason to go back here anymore because...

Harrah's - This place has decided to get some $5 tables even late/overnight during the week. Monday night at 11 PM the tables were hopping. Well, not mine. Mine was ice cold, but still 100000x more playable than at CR. In comparison to Casino Royale, the lighting was great, the dealers were friendly and kinda funny even (encouraging some drunk moron to make Fire Bets every roll because he kept slowing down the table by making other random dumbass bets mid-roll), and you can actually put a name on the booze in your cocktail! Or beer! Maybe I've just grown up (a bit). Odds were 3x-4x-5x, which was just rich enough to make a small stack last long enough to get a little buzz on. If only they'd roll a $5 table on the weekends now...

Exotics Racing School - All kinds of stupid fun. Drove an Audi R8 V10 with an instructor commanding that I go faster. That's just the kind of encouragement you want. I wish their track was a little bigger/longer, as the initial 5 laps I purchased felt like they kinda flew by. I mean, in hindsight, they actually did, but if anyone is considering going, just pay to upgrade to at least a few more laps. 5 is not enough if you're enjoying yourself. The R8 was extremely forgiving of my beginner mistakes and still let me corner at absurd speeds without spinning out. By lap 10 it was mega fun. Oh, and the shuttle out there is cheaper and faster than a cab. Just make sure you ask ahead of time when the next one back is, or you'll be stranded out there for up to an hour after your session like I was.

Also JaySB, I didn't know you were still helping goons do non-goony things in Vegas. If that's the case for my next trip, we'll be hitting you up f'sho. Congrats on the WSOP run, man.

The four best places for poker are the Aria, Bellagio, Venetian and Wynn. You really can't go wrong with any of them, though a bunch of people are 'protesting' the Venetian because of the owner's anti-online poker stance. I don't know what limits you're looking to play, but the Aria has a $125 daily tournament that's about the best in town. You really can't go wrong no matter which one you pick, though.

Stay three nights if it doesn't matter to your wallet or timetable. Why stay two, if you can stay three?

I haven't stayed at the Wynn properties (I live here, so I only stay at local hotels if I decide to take a little staycation), but, unless you're going to shell out for a monster suite or something, I doubt it's worth trading up from the Bellagio or Aria.

I don't think there's any way to make a reasonable "must eat" list for this city, there are just too drat many choices. Everyone you talk to will have his or her own list, you may as well just do a Google search and pick randomly from the top-rated places you find. Personally, I'd say hit Top of the World, because it's a rotating restaurant eight-hundred feet off the ground, and that's, you know, cool.

As for attire, excuse me while I laugh. Even in the most expensive properties, you'll see people in dripping wet bathing suits wandering the floor, and the dress code for all but the very fanciest restaurants is "no exposed genitals."

I'm not much of a clubber, so I can't help you, there.

Do you want to know the terrifying truth, or do you want to see me sock a few dingers?!!
I'm hitting up Vegas this weekend for my birthday. We already have our suite at Caesar's booked, and I have a few items on the agenda already, but I thought some friendly goon advice would be in order.

Friday: Arrive, place sports bets, gamble around. For dinner I want to go somewhere nice. I always do buffets when I'm in Vegas, so my knowledge of the other restaurants is very minimal. Is Ramsay's Steakhouse at Paris worth it? Any other nice places to recommend? I eat about anything.

Saturday: Gambling across the spectrum, most likely at places like Ellis Island and downtown. I want to do a show, and I'm leaning towards trying Zumanity. Does it suck? I've seen Ka, Mystere, and Viva Elvis and enjoyed them all. I'm considering Love as well, I just know its more expensive. But are there any other shows you all would highly recommend? As well as any other restaurants (non-buffet)?

And I'm definitely doing the Pinball place. It's this place: http://www.pinballmuseum.org right? And you pretty much just show up with your money, make change, and play til your hearts content? I thought I'd heard there was a way to pay for a full hour of pinball time. But I may have just dreamed that.

Love is better than Zumanity. I've been to both. I'm not much of a Beatles fan but it was great. It was like an awesome history lesson on the Beatles set to their music.

That's awesome to hear! Craps is by far the best. Hopefully you live far enough away from other craps tables (like I do) that you will not let variance consume you as you hit the table night after night after night after...

I always just back up my passline bet. And do nothing else. I feel like such a boring dork, but sidebetting on 6s and 8s, hardways, fields seem to never work out for me. Just for everyone else.

Sail when it's windy

Was in Vegas for 72 hours last weekend. What a blast. I can't wait to come back.

We stayed at the Vdara which is very nice but has a small pool (although we didn't have a problem getting a pool side seat). If you are not there to gamble it is pretty great since there is no casino in it. You are basically attached to the Aria and Cosmo which are awesome as well.

Went to 3 clubs and highly recommend them all. XS at the Encore, Marquee at the Cosmo, and Hakkasan at the MGM. All are crazy and super fun. A lot of good looking ladies, expensive drinks, super good sound. The best thing we did was buy tickets a week before. Walking right in with hundreds standing in line and paying 2-3 times what we did was great. Just remember that there is a dress code.

I would like to get back later this summer for some pool parties (either at Wet Republic or Dria's) and see some more sweet DJs at the clubs.

My only regret is that I never went before I was 27 and married, so much action that I had to turn down...

If you're looking for the cheapest Craps available, Hooters is probably going to be one of your stops. I like playing there because the gaming floor is so small there's always a waitress close by.

Excalibur has cheap craps and the tables can be pretty rowdy and fun.

Pfft, you must be some kind of high roller. I stopped shooting craps at Jokers Wild when they doubled the minimum from $.50 to $1. Now, they have the nerve to make the table a $2 minimum on the weekends! Who can afford that?

Speaking of MB I want to stay there 10/28 but it looks like there is a convention going on and the price is really high.

Any cool tricks to get a real rate instead of a "more than the Wynn" rate?
