Have there been any serious breakthroughs in aviation safety? because it seems be it now or 30 years ago, when a plane crashes you still have the exact same chances of dying a horrible death. I guess there is not much you can do when flying in a tin can.

Auto deployable full-plane parachutes come to mind. Pretty much guarantees a soft glide down if you're a rich bastard on a private plane that has one. However, these have not been yet been fitted into any commercial jets since there is no interest to pay the huge development costs to get this working on larger planes.

why don't they spray airplanes with Flubber and tell the pilot to roll the plane if its gonna get caught on something?

Yes. Can be used if engines/electronics fail and is especially useful if terrain is not suitable for normal emergency landing.

It should be noted that planes that have been so equipped have still been involved in plenty of fatal accidents.

did any of them involve fatalities that could have been avoided by having the plane plummet into the ground instead?

nothing would be funnier than a plane with this slamming into the ground and then a few seconds later, a huge parachute erupting out of the wreckage.

The plane parachute is the best invention if only because of the stories of rich guys ruining perfectly good planes because they freaked out and hit the panic button.

Well now, this is interesting:

quote:

An object which looks like an explosive had on Monday washed up on the beach of Baarah in Haa Alif Atoll.

A police media official said that the islanders had found the object, washed up on the beach sometime early in the evening. He also reported that police had responded immediately by arriving at the scene and in turn reporting to Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF). The official informed that they do not known what it was, and that MNDF would determine its origins and whereabouts.
Actually, it looks more like a fire extinguisher from an aircraft than a bomb, but okay. Ya'll go check that poo poo out.

It has happened, I seem to recall. Parachute didn't open, guy managed to crash land safely and then *pop* out comes the parachute.

Seeing it took two years to find the Air France flight that crashed into the Atlantic in 2009; it'll be a while.

Especially since this is in the southern Indian Ocean which means unless a wing or something is found floating (to approximate where to look) they probably will never find it.

It took the world years to find the actual crash site of the Air France flight, but they found debris within days confirming that the plane actually did crash and all hands were in fact lost.

This is different insofar as both the former and the latter are unknown. Finding debris that could conclusively confirmed as belonging to MH370 would be "finding the plane" in this case, although even that is looking more and more remote.

Isn't the 40th parallel south known for its storms and extremely demented waves? If so, welp, even if they found the debris, those could be misleading.

Edit: 122 objects sighted by satellite, according to Malaysia.

Trying to find the original crash site using floating debris is not very easy in good conditions. Even if you know exactly how the currents in the area work, and had no storms or wind, the debris is going to fan out the more it travels. So if the plane crashes on Day #1, and you find the debris on day #2, you can extrapolate a fairly small area which it originated from as it only had one day to travel and spread out. With the time and conditions the search teams are dealing with, even if they found debris, all it's going to tell them is that the crash site was either North or South of Malaysia.
