I don't think you understand just how poo poo Derby were. Clough's management and talentspotting were definitely beyond his contemporaries to a degree we haven't seen since.

Also his management methods lend themselves to legend easily and he was a great showman. Getting your team stinking drunk and not letting them leave the lockin might not be the best way to win trophies, but when it works nobody is forgetting it quickly.

Ok cool, thanks. This is why I asked. :)

They did, it portrayed him as a narcissistic arsehole totally reliant on his assistant to scout players for him.

So, accurately.

Forest and Derby are both small clubs who had done gently caress all before Clough and, one league win for Derby (with Clough's team) aside, have done gently caress all since.

Small clubs who could afford the first £1million player and of course the fact he did gently caress all since winning the european cup at the 12 years he was at forest since he also took the league champions and couldnt last 44 days lol

Forest were in the second division when he took over, and were reigning league champs when they signed Francis. They also looked better throughout the 80s than they have at any point since.

If you're interested in finding out a little more about Clough, I'd highly recommend reading Provided You Don't Kiss Me: 20 Years with Brian Clough. It won the William Hill best sports book a few years ago and is really good. It's written by the football correspondent for the local Nottingham paper, who had unprecedented access to Clough and the Forrest team during Clough's time there. If I remember correctly, he used to travel with the team to games and it's a great insight to the club as well as Clough's career. The end of his time at Forrest was really sad, though.

On the subject of his time at Derby, to think that he brought them to within a bent ref (who got bribes of cash and a new Fiat from Juventus) of a European Cup Final is really incredible.

Anyway, since this is the pictures thread, I've always liked his statue in Nottingham.

Jackie Milburn's statue used to not be at St James' Park but was moved there not that long ago
