I... wasn't aware there were other ways of opening a canned drink other than a ring pull??? Is this supposed to be an indicator of a time period? Are we not going to use ring pull cans in the future?

There's a new chapter of Spirit Circle, the best manga currently in serialization in my opinion. You should read it, because it's the best manga currently in serialization.

In the past couple of weeks I've seen at least two series that I know pretty much 100% aren't licensed show up on mangafox as licensed, for some bizarre reason. I wouldn't put too much stock in it. Looking at the wikipedia page it seems Liar Game was licensed in Italy and France so maybe that's enough for mangafox to pull them?

CVE posted:I have to say I just love his art because it makes everything so abusrb. "Oh yeah let's mess with the dude thats almost 7 feet tall and pure muscle. He is clearly just a meek banker " Souten no Ken got a lot of mileage out of that gag too, I think the author just likes dressing up his 7 foot tall muscled supermen as nerdy guys with their face literally planted in a book. Also someone is working their way through Bambino! Secondo and has a new chapter out yesterday.

Captain Invictus posted:New Immortal Hounds chapter is out, and Mama is creepy. Kenzaki's a Good Cop, so it'll be interesting to see how Windchime handles her duty. If she just completely bungles trying to hit on him because she's never even thought to love someone, that would be the best. Probably a huge bummer just from what that says about her backstory, but it'd probably be amusing for a bit before getting back to grimness. Just read this. That was a pretty dumb explanation at the beginning. People just gave up on researching the immortality thing? What? That's infinitely less believable than there being an immortality thing.

Thanks to Autonomous Monster for that post on the first page about I am Missing. Christ this is a good read. I just wish I would have started reading after it had finished up. The story really does build a forboding atmosphere very well, very tense and exciting throughout. Does anyone know if it's been released at all in the US? I'd like to actually buy a few volumes if at all possible.

I've also started reading Say Hello to Black Jack, which is a pretty great medical manga about a good doctor who's just starting out in a corrupt medical system. I'm loving it so far, the faces are just amazing.

Things you are [not] missing out on by continuing to not read Ajin: Relatively innocent dude getting tortured + casual digit amputation, no resolution/explanation to main character turning into a sociopath , and the ever welcome 9-11 reenactment! Taking bets on how quickly the series gets dropped from English localization! In short: series is poo poo continue to avoid it.

The 14th volume of Eden was finally released by Dark Horse after years of waiting. The series ended in Japan in 2008 or so, but the English releases were put on indefinite hiatus. I already lost hope on ever getting the full English release, but maybe it will still happen. Only four volumes to go! For those who don't know, Eden It's an Endless World is one of the best Seinen mangas of the past decade.

At first I thought it was dumb because the first panel was dumb looking kids wielding magical hula hoops but then it actually became actually interesting. With all the reincarnation poo poo going on it actually reminds me of this book series I read ages ago - eerily similar premise, with a horrible tragedy that resulted in the ugly death of several people, and them being reborn again and again to relive different versions of the same tragedy, only one person is cursed with immortality until he can 'set things right', so he runs into the same people again and again over the millenia and tries to end the bad karma between them that dooms them to tragedy again and again. I think maybe the author of Wolfsmund was playing a long game and the first few creepy volumes were setups for the current ones where the smug rear end in a top hat antagonist is about to get his dumb face pushed in.

While I don't really mind the anti-US stuff (since it's more or less true, minus the fact that it's a little heavy-handed with its stereotypes), the whole "Japan used to be good before they lost in WW2" thing is kind of weird. It's not really stated outright, but it's heavily implied when it repeatedly states how corrupt Japan has become in the post-WW2 years.

There have been some interesting things written about America's involvement in shaping post-WWII Japan, and strong arguments to be made that Japan's semi-broken form of democracy, can be traced directly to decisions made early in the post-war period. In short while things started out very promising in terms of liberalization and reform, when it became apparent that the US would need an ally in East Asia, they stacked the decks to ensure we would have one, leaving Japan with a 'democracy' firmly in the hands of the LDP for the duration of the cold war. John Dower's Embracing Defeat is a really interesting account of this period.

So I just started reading a lot of stuff I think you would classify as Seinen? For Urasawa I've finished Pluto and have the first three volumes of 20th Century Boys. From Tezuka I've got Dororo, Apollo's song, the first volume of Buddha(haven't read it yet), and I've read the first 4 or 5 of Black Jack. I'm not sure if these would be classified as Shonen or not but I've also got all of the Shigeru Mizuki books that Drawn and Quarterly put out, and have really enjoyed Showa: History of Japan and Onwards Toward Our Noble Deaths. I also picked up the first two volumes of Keiji Nakazawa's Barefoot Gen. I've been really enjoying reading about WW2 era Japan from the Japanese perspective. Do you guys have any recommendations of other manga based on that subject? Is this even the right thread?
