I need a new phone and carrier and am thinking that adding a line to my families AT&T plan would be my best option since they've been with the carrier since the 90's and there looks to be some discount offerings happening at the moment. They are currently on the FamilyTalk Nation 450 with Rollover plan. I'd like to add a line and get the Galaxy S4 and it looks like that'll increase the bill by about $60 a month with unlimited messaging and a 3GB data plan. The other phones on the plan are a basic phone and an iPhone5 which doesn't use much data and doesn't have unlimited messaging. They currently have about 1200 roll over minutes. What would be my best option considering? Just jump on their plan and get the rebates?

Ok, here is my math to see if it's really worth it to give up my current plan. My current bill: $40.00 - 450 minutes $05.00 - Messaging 200 $30.00 - Unlim data for 4G LTE Smartphones w/Visual Voice Mail -11.90 - 17% National Account Discount (FAN) $63.10 - Total Monthly Plan Charges $03.18 - Surcharges & Fee $02.09 - Government Fees & Taxes $68.37 - Total I want to get a new phone, and my contract ends Saturday. I'm hoping that the HTC One M8 is $199, and I have a BB $50 gift card promo, so let's just say $149. I regularly use around 2.5GB every month. I can try to cut that back to 2GB as it's mainly podcasts that I download at work (can download at home instead), but I do like having the unlimited data even if it does get throttled at 5GB (only reached that once). If I get the 2GB plan with Next for that same HTC One M8 (assuming it's priced similarly to the Galaxy S5), my bill will be something like this? $40.00 - Unlimited Talk/Text with 2GB of data $25.00 - Out of Contract Smartphone $25.00 - Next 18 -06.80 - FAN Discount $83.20 - Monthly Plan charges $03.18 - Surcharges/Fees $02.09 - Government Fees and Taxes (probably would be higher I would assume, but I'll keep it at this). $88.47 - Monthly Total So if I kept my old contract, I'd be paying $68.37 for 24 months, +$162.41 (Best Buy $149 plus tax) +$36 activation fee (I think I should get that (or upgrade, one of them) waived as part of my FAN agreement, but I'll keep it in the calculations.) + 36 upgrade fee = $1875.29 If I do the new plan, I'd be paying $88.47 for 26 months (assuming I wanted to keep the phone) + 2.25 sales tax at signing = $2302.47 I realize I could trade in the phone at 18 months, so If I did that, the cost would be $1875.29 vs. $1594.71 (24 months vs. 18 months). But for that, I do have to make sure I keep the phone in good condition, and I no longer get to keep it. I'd also be losing my unlimited data, but gaining unlimited talk and text (but I rarely talk on the phone, and only have gone over 200 texts once / use Google Voice texts). Allowing for tax variations, is this math basically correct? I'd also think about buying the HTC One outright and moving to AIO for $45 a month, but I have a Microcell in the house, and I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be active any more once I dropped AT&T. My friend wants to join my family plan by buying a Galaxy S5 and porting his number from Verizon. Since the S5 just went up for preorder I'm assuming they'll sell out fast. Is there any way to preorder an S5 with Next for a new line starting upon receipt of the phone, still get the $100 bill credit, and port his number once everything arrives?

Silly Burrito posted:Ok, here is my math to see if it's really worth it to give up my current plan. Yeah that math is right, if you have an old $5 texting plan the old plans will be less. The new next plan would be much closer if you had the $20 unlimited texting plan. So since you seem fine with the text call and data plan you have, keep it.

Or give him the last 4 of your social and billing zip code. So it turns out that because I got this phone sent to me from Apple, it had the account info lock that AT&T couldn't bypass. The guy went to the AT&T store and had the rep call me. I told them the info and they unlocked it and activated it for him. Didn't deactivate my phone or anything.

Moving my family to Modesto ca this coming week and will be traveling roundtrip from Sacramento to Portland Oregon on i5 5x a week. We currently have sprint and was wondering if anyone had any first hand experience with the quality of voice and data service we will have on the drive. We stream heavily, its not unusual for us to have a combined 14 to 18 hours of radio streaming everyday and occasionally a couple hours of Netflix. I fear losing my unlimited data as you all can imagine for this reason. Any help would be very appreciated!

Well, this is the ATT thread, not Sprint, but if you are asking about sprint coverage it will probably suck. The only other real unlimited data plan is TMobile.

Yeah I wanted to know about art service. Original draft of my post had a comment about switching providers that I see didn't make it. I'm expecting horrible sprint service and I'm trying to figure out best option for us to switch to.

Currently, my in-laws have two dumb phones on their own AT&T account which I have nothing to do with. They are not under contract and haven't been for years. I'd like to get them on my 10 GB family plan with Motomaker-customized Moto X's whilst keeping their phone numbers. What's the right way to go about making this happen? My naive assumption is that it'd be easiest to call ATT and get their current dumb phones transferred and then after that is done, going to the motomaker site and ordering the X's.

I have never bought a used phone before, so I just wanted to check before I did this. If I were to buy a used iPhone and then use it with a new line on my current plan, is there anything I need to check for besides it being an AT&T device? Planning on buying on Swappa.

No, that's fine. Swappa makes them confirm the IMEI is not a stolen phone, so once Swappa approves of the posting you're good. Since you buy using paypal you have significant ability to dispute the transaction (the dispute resolution takes a couple days, but almost always will give you your money back). If you want a 2nd layer of protection then make sure to fund the paypal transaction using a credit card then you can dispute the credit card charge instead of having to rely on Paypal dispute resolution. I had a bad transaction on Swappa and did dispute resolution and got refunded after about 2 weeks. Swappa's the best way to buy used phones in my option and I've had 2 lovely transactions, but there are jerks everywhere.

I make this post about once a week in this thread, but it still seems like the mobile share value 10gb plan is going to be the same price as my current plan, with way more data and not having to worry about minutes or text messages (I have the unlimited texting thing, but it's still $30 a month; I also had a bunch of rollover minutes so we didn't really have to worry about minutes). And then new phones are either buy outright or use Next (which is tax up front + the full amount / 20 or 26)?

I'm out of contract on an Atrix 2 that I got in Feb 2012. I'm currently paying $90 a month for 2 gigs data, unlimited texting and 450 minutes. That's way more than I need (I've never come close to using up my minutes or data) - Can I switch to the 2GB mobile share plan and lower my bill?

Yes and yes you should switch to it. $65 a month when out of contract, add a next plan if you upgrade (or buy a nexus 5 outright to keep the lower plan).

I called 611 and talked to a nice hispanic gentleman named Lacides. I received a $20 credit, too. I originally called about getting the auto-added data plan removed from one of my lines (that was a smartphone but she doesn't even know how to use data; I've posted about it before). Then I switched plans. Then he told me he was giving me the credit. I'll definitely come into the store if I ever add a line or do Next or anything. It's kind of a far drive!
