Addendum to my previous post about my sardine lunch: Was hangin' out with the lady friend watching a movie and had a lil burp, again stinking like sardines. Got cockblocked by the tasty fishies.

powerofrecall posted:This should really just be canned fish thread. PYF sardines, kippered fish snacks and smoked oysters Oh, we may stray... ...but we always return to our dark master...thecannedsardine! That's my haul from yesterday. The King Oscar skinless/boneless were cheaper their usual brislings, so I decided to give them a whirl. They're large and basically like Reese's skinless/boneless, so just go with what's cheapest if that's you're thing. Snagged the CotS smoked because someone vouched, but at $0.89 a can I'm not holding my breath (or maybe I AM! ). Also went with the kippers because they were fairly cheap and I figured "what the hey!" Trader Joes and King Oscar will face off. Lastly we have Season brand in tomato sauce. I like Brunswick's but frankly their tomato sauce looks sketchy as balls. I'm hoping for a slightly chunkier, non-taco-bell-sauce-packet texture from this one. Time will tell. FaradayCage posted:Oh, we may stray... I'm fuckin jelly, King Oscar owns Point of discussion: why does kippered herring vary so much in preparation and quality when canned? Sometimes it is smoky deliciousness and other times it's not too different than a plain canned sardine in water. why is that e: specifically sometimes "kipper snacks" vs. "smoked herring" end up being pretty different in execution

# ? Mar 29, 2014 06:31 |

its different people making it, varying levels of smoke, different areas the fish are caught from and even the season it was caught/farmed e: not to be a dick, but that's like asking why different hamburgers taste different even if you're talking about differences in tastes from can to can of the same manufacturer DiggityDoink fucked around with this message at 06:50 on Mar 29, 2014 |

Some scrub posted an putanesca recipe awhile ago that was just frankly poo poo. Here's a better one. Tin of anchovies Some garlic Olive oil Can of tomatoes, diced preferably Red pepper flakes Smash up your garlic and saute it in the olive oil, put the anchovies in, maybe add some butter if you're feeling sexy, and after the garlic starts to smell fantastic toss in the red pepper flakes. Cook these until the anchovies dissolve. Put in the tomatoes. Stir occasionally. (You should be on about med heat for this whole project lest you burn your garlic) Meanwhile cook your pasta, linguine is traditional but whatever you have is fine, and then when your whole house smells like delicious spicy italian whore sex mix the pasta with the sauce.

Get King Oscar extra virgin olive oil sardines or don't even bother. I suppose other brands that offer bristling could be eatable but really just get King Oscar.

Still never had sardines but i did buy some king oscar in oil so ill give it a shot in a few days or so. meanwhile, eating kalamata olives right out of the jar with a cocktail fork is pretty own too.

Not bad--just way different. varying levels of smoke is probably a lot of it but I wonder sometimes if it is also varying types of fish (considering that "sardines" can actually be many different types of actual fish.)

sidetrack: how does one enjoy pickled herring effectively? I get a craving for it every now and then but the taste is so rich and potent that I can only eat a rollmop or two before I put the jar away for another few weeks. Shakespeare died after a night of too much wine and pickled herring and that sounds cool.

I'm proud I'm not snobby about the sardines I'd eat. If I go into Dollar Tree and see some Chicken of the Sea smoked in oil, I'm walking out with 5 tins. If I see King Oscar on sale at a regular grocery store, I'll walk out with that instead never minding the expense. Variety is a good thing.

It's troll-caught tuna, so it's better for the environment as well. All of their flavors are good, but the garlic albacore and smoked albacore are the best. Doesn't even need anything mixed in, just put that poo poo on a cracker and go to flavortown. http://www.pelicanpackers.com/

I love kippers/kippered herring/smoked herring/whatever... it is possibly one of my favorite foods. Same with mackerel (raw, preferably), and lox. Delicious, delicious lox (even though it's not a canned food I feel it's worth mentioning). My girlfriend is repulsed by this stuff and I have to wait until she goes to sleep/goes to class to eat it
