Okay wow if they look that lovely then the HGs are off the table. I guess I'm spoiled by the HGs I have being relatively recent (GN Archer and Ahead Smultron) and pretty decent.

HG SEED is when the HG line stopped being poo poo entirely, and HG 00 is when we started to reach modern levels of engineering. HG 00 S2 is when we hit it. I mean poo poo, if you think that looks bad, go look at that 1/144 V2 I reviewed a while back.

I'm not sure if I want to throw her into the deep end with a MG and I know what her current favourite gundams are, does anyone know if the HG Freedom or Justice is any good? The HG Freedom is an utter piece of poo poo (some of the stickers don't even stick properly), but on the off chance she likes the Strike Gundam as well, there's an excellent new release of the Aile Strike from the HG All Gundam line. This is it compared to the original. The only detail stickers are the red on the Aile Pack's main wings and the small white band on the shield; And here's the box to look for (beware because there is also an HG Strike in the Remastered SEED line, and that's just the same awful kit from ten years ago) The Build Strike's just as good (the new Aile Strike's built off the same mould), and the Zaku Amazing is a moderately simple and solid kit if she wants either of those. Just don't expect much in the way of big dynamic poses from the Zaku Amazing though.

Seconding this, Strike Freedom MG is a great kit. It's simple but actually quite elegant, and no really fiddly bits asides from maybe the mechanisms in the wings but even then it's not hard. It's also a really impressive kit when you have the wings all extended and it comes with a stand so you can really show it off. I would be very wary about the RG since the parts are so much smaller than the MG version and much more fiddly. They're molded with bumps and jagged edges, so they actually look like an intense beam is shooting out of the saber handle. This is what i'm referring to.

And the hands / forearms are really terrible. EW Epyon also has the most baby birthing hips I ever saw on a gundam. If she's really into Gundam Build Fighters, why not just get her a Zaku Amazing? You can still find them in stock at decent prices in some places. I got my Plavisky-Wing Star Build Strike on Amazon for like $20. Was here in 3 days flat (with the 5-9 shipping you get free with +$35 orders). You wanna grab her and yourself a couple of kits (which would definitely be enough to hit the free shipping), and build them together, you'd probably have a lot of fun. New HGs are very forgiving, I've been assembling mine with very little but an X-Acto knife & some nail clippers for segmenting thick runners, and some Future for the translucent pieces, and it's coming together quite nicely, despite my complete lack of experience. You may need to help her with the smaller stickers, though, there's a couple that are way too easy to gently caress up and lose forever. I had to adjust most of the head stickers on my Star Build with the X-Acto knife. (Especially that loving tiny back-of-the-head camera! ) Edit HobbySearch and Amazon both still have the Zaku Amazing in stock. Edit2 You may also wanna find somewhere to pre-order the Bearguy-III, because she is going to be willing to kill for one. Edit3 Apologies for potato picture, it's currently 6:30 AM, so phone pics are the best I can do. Working on better ones. Progress report on previously-mentioned SBS. I'm about halfway through, got the base body built. It's been a fun build, has taken about 6-8 hours, between cutting pieces, removing sprue nubs, and trying to sand what I can of what's left away, then scrambling to pick up the pieces I keep dropping with my big fat fingers before the dog eats them. The model itself is fairly nice, though the right thigh's pivot joint has stubbornly insisted on staying very loose despite several dips in Future. It's not a huge deal during posing, since gravity keeps things together nicely, it's only really during moving it around You can't really tell, but I also dunked the red head 'gem' in future for a gloss coat, and the contrast looks very good against everything else. I hope I can figure out a way to preserve that (as well as the translucent bits on the sides of the shins) once I eventually give everything else a matte coating. girl dick energy fucked around with this message at 11:52 on Mar 30, 2014 |

Easiest way is to just take those parts off when you do the flat coat. If they're not removable, or if you just can't do it, plan B is to mask them.

They'll throw the production on the backburner for a while but they don't discontinue, especially with a series that's still fresh like Build Fighters. I think something's up with HLJ.

They are pretty cheap and I want to try and get some more non-UC suits for my shelf as the only MGs I have that aren't UC are the Turn A and Deathscythe. I've also thought about the Heavyarms, Proto Zero and Gundam X. I know those are all better and more recent kits, but I love G Gundam a lot. I wish they would do a MG Nobel or Maxter (will never happen.) I actually have a HG God Gundam but I sorta hosed up the paint job and I'll have to wait for nicer weather before I fix it.

The Crossbone Maoh's finally gotten some fully-stickered pictures. I was worried the standard holdy-hands were going to sag with those huge cutter/beam gun weapons, but it looks like they skipped that by just making the wrist joints too short to tilt. Though I have no idea why anyone would use anything but those "V" hands .

Blitz, thanks for those tips a while back about brushpainting. Especially the one about natural vs synthetic fibre brushes. Paint just flows off the natural hair brush I got in a set of 5 at the art shop for 2bux compared to the pain that is synthetic Tamiya brush I got at the hobby store for 6 dollars. Also, now that I'm applying paint in the proper thicknesses, I've been experimenting with sanding down the layer a little with 2000 grit sandpaper, then polishing the surface back to a shine with wet toothpaste. The result is less shiny than the untouched paint, but it also looks more like an actual piece of metal. Untouched paint has this glasslike surface that just doesn't look right for some reason.. On the other hand, it's going to be a long week polishingthe rest of my HG Nu...

Oh god no. That's a single action, which is pretty much a glorified spraycan. It's made by Games Workshop too, who pretty much don't deserve your money. If you want to get into airbrushing, don't cheap out. Get a solid double action Iwata or something and a compressor to go with it. Fauxtool can probably tell you more. As for what you need, assuming you're starting from scratch you want: 1. Something to paint with, and all of the accompanying equipment. 2. Paint. If you're intent on airbrushing, go with either acrylic or lacquer. 2a. If you're going with lacquer you want a respirator pronto. 3. Paint thinner. 4. Masking tape. 5. Gloves. 6. Some way of holding your pieces up while you blast them. Alligator clips on top of bamboo skewers stabbed into styrofoam are a popular option.
