Yeah the only Protoss that actually care about the Terrans and their well being as a whole are the ones that Raynor befriended and helped. All the other ones don't really care about humanity. Also from what I've seen you really don't want to be part of the Zerg collective.

That's exactly a perfect reason to NOT get the tanks for that mission, because each mission introduces a unit ideally suited for that gameplay. We can use Siege tanks to great effect in every single mission, but the train robbery introduces, and is suited for, Diamondbacks. A note on that mission - I always found a lot of luck just sticking a couple SCVs into a spare command center and landing it at whatever altar my army is currently at, harvesting, then lifting off and moving on to the next. Makes for short trips from the altars to the command center and a command center tagging along with your army is a lot less vulnerable than a SCV in the open.

How much SC 1 story have you covered? I've only seen two videos and I can explain some if you havne't done so yet. I want to eventually get back around to the Brood Wars LP I only did a few missions of, but eh.Raldan posted:Yes, I will be showing of everything I can. I've not seen the specific video yet but for The Devil's Playground are you going to, if you haven't, done The Scenic Route (Destroy all zerg everything)? As much as I dislike the story and the multiplayer, the gameplay itself of the campaign is great. DFlux posted:Yeah the only Protoss that actually care about the Terrans and their well being as a whole are the ones that Raynor befriended and helped. All the other ones don't really care about humanity. Also from what I've seen you really don't want to be part of the Zerg collective. The thing is, most of the Protoss are those guys now as the vast majority died in Brood Wars. The Tal-Darim are new and any other groups are new. In BW it was just the survivors of Aiur with Artanis and Zeratul (until he left) on Shakurus after Raynor helped Artanis' company escape off of Aiur. --- So some story talk. I put more thought into it then most, I suppose, because Starcraft was one of the first stories, ever, that I encountered and it really has a special place in my heart as a result. It really bugs me how Raynor's nowhere near the same guy he was in the original. I mean aside from being bald and having a rounder face then his chiseled space marine visage. The guy was never shown to being beyond a casual interest in Kerrigan. I guess you could argue that he stewed in failure for four (Why only four, it doesn't make sense and it was longer then that in real time anyways) years but why not, I don't know, stew in failure over his best friends' fate? He was friends with Fenix, Zeratul and Artanis and only had any idea what the lattermost's fate was yet he's yet to bring up any of them in a conversation with Horner or any of the other guys. Regardless, his mopy-ness makes one wonder why he's the leader still. I liked the original draft more. The crew members in the background had some more to do, and one of them was going to lead a mutiny. That'd have been more interesting then silently following Raynor's agenda, but oh well. It's hardly the only missed opportunity, but it's the only one that would've happened by now as far as I'm aware. Speaking of conversations, another peeve of mine is how conversations work. They're basically two way spitting dialogue back and forth. Brood Wars just had up to four portraits together at a time but that still let more dynamic conversations happen. In the end though at least Wings of Liberty isn't as bad as Heart of the Swarm story wise, even with the removed elements excluded. But that's not something we'll be seeing for a long, long time now. --- Trivia I learned from an older iteration of the Gamers.txt thread: Tychus' VA played a parody of Tychus in a Star/Warcraft porn parody. The sad fact is that Chris Mentzen just isn't the writer he was back then, for whatever reason. Either half a decade doing pop culture jokes and dodgy retcons on Azeroth destroyed his skills, or perhaps he had a mandate to be "easily accessible"...who knows? Perhaps there just aren't any checks on him now Blizzard have Hat Money.

New Gettysburg, yo You're right in saying that there is no direct romantic relationship, but there's a loooooot of stuff that is implied. Mengsk's betrayal of Kerrigan is the whole reason for Raynor being who he is in SCII and eventually he goes to Char, what is essentially the Zerg homeworld, because he feels this dead "just a friend" calling to him through the void before she becomes the Queen of Blades. I wouldn't say it's out of character for him to be a "Knight in Shining Armor". Although that is the problem with his character in SCII, and where you're most right, it's the exact same one from SCI. He's even still drinking his sorrows in Backwater Station, as if he was never a general in the Protoss fleet, as if he didn't swear to kill Kerrigan for betraying him and murdering his friends. I think in order to strengthen the connection to SCI and make the story make sense to new comers, they left out most of the developments from the Brood War campaign and that's why Raynor feels so wrong to us and probably seems like a big dumb sap to everyone else. Although I never bought HotS, so maybe his character develops some now that we have a new continuity? I'm curious to see how that story goes

Mentzen is on record as saying he didn't like the way Brood War handled the UED. He wants them to have far more advanced technology ("tachyon lasers" were his exact words) and be much more distinct from the core Terrans. Now I think about it, Starcraft 2's installation recap doesn't mention Brood War either. I figured it was a simple time/space issue, but could there have been a conscious decision within Blizzard to quietly sweep the expansion under the rug? From memory, the different console conversions all got differing story campaigns and the Koreans got an entirely separate expansion pack all to themselves, so Mentzen & Co might have decided to just make a clean sweep and only refer to SC1 itself. This would also explain a certain character's slightly awkward return (and even more awkward art direction) in Heart of the Swarm. The less said about the eternal Sylvanas/Kerrigan figure in all Blizzard's plotlines, the better.

There are a couple of maps of the month that lead up to it for the PC/Mac version of the game, but that's it. There's also no special Korean edition of Brood War that's any different from any other region.

Also, I forgot to mention that goliaths with the Charon Booster in Brood War were able to match the range of guardians. That's how good that upgrade was. That, and what made scouts such a bad unit was that they were so expensive considering what you got and really need their fleet beacon upgrades to be worthwhile. They're still a pretty good unit to use in air battles because they can deal more damage with their air-to-air attack than any other unit in the game except for scourge.

Unless you suppose that it costs a fortune to launch any interstellar fleet and they just went with a small task force, either in the assumption that the Koprulu colonists wouldn't have rebuilt any kind of technologically advanced civilization yet (making them easy pickings for a handful of marines that became nigh-immortal thanks to the UED medics), or that they'd just be able to acquire weapons on-site (which they did, I think: wasn't there a mission where you had to steal battlecruisers?). Or maybe they just needed an excuse to have TvT maps without the player either working for evil Mengsk or stereotypically roguish good guy Raynor again.

Depends on how advanced the UED society is I suppose. Starcraft never really tells us much about Earth, only that it still exists and that where Terrans come from. And yeah what came in brood wars was just an expeditionary fleet, but even then the UED's tech should still be better then the Terrans. Actually has it ever been said how long the Terrans have been in the Koprulu sector? I sure can't remember if its ever been stated. As for the the stealing battlecruisers thing I don't remember.
