The general defence from Cable and friends (and the line parroted by the media) is that successive governments tried to privatise Royal Mail and weren't able to do it (without mentioning why), so getting a profitable public service thrown onto the market floor to be torn to rich bloody pieces by investment bankers is actually an achievement in itself! It's like the scrap metal guys who take away your old appliances - you're just happy to get them out the door. Any money they actually give you is basically a bonus! Betjeman posted:You won't see them around anywhere much any more as straight glasses are much easy to stack and store, but go to an old man pub and they probably hand them out to the bitter drinking regulars. I was over in England on business once, it was terribly hot so after work I decided to nip into a quaint looking pub on the way back to the hotel. I never had a proper English ale before so I ordered one of the local brews. It wasn't one of those warm, soupy looking things you see on the telly. It was golden, clear, ice-cold and incredibly refreshing. About an hour and a half and six of those I was crooked drunk. I couldn't tell the barman where my hotel was, my strong Irish accent probably not helping the situation. He had to ring my home office in Dublin to get the name of the hotel so he could stick me in a taxi. I dont remember anything after that but I was told I just went straight to bed, so that was nice. Thats my English beer story.
