I have a pretty decent run going now on Stealth A, have two 2-burst lasers and the mini beam at sector 5, looking for a bomb I know the game won't give me, but besides that, as long as the flagship doesn't hack my cloak I think I'm good. It's nice that the game highlights which rooms the beam will hit now instead of having you guess.

Control Volume posted:So in my first run in hard mode I got a burst laser III and burst laser I in addition to my starting burst laser, was feeling pretty hot. Is it just me or do the Lanius ships have crazy amounts of evasion? I had like the equivalent of 9 lasers and I only got through the 3 shield ones like half the time. This was on normal, multiple times. Or is my luck just poo poo. I got to the boss ship with the red tail, died to the last form. Mostly the same fight, but the addition of the mind control and hacking you just makes it that much harder to get through unscathed (I had two mantis boarders but no cloak)

Not gonna lie this is no fun, even on easy. I'm terrible at this game before but I could at least consistently beat it. Now I'm getting pummeled, even on easy. Oh, three jumps into the game and I'm boarded by three zoltans. Not to mention coming up against guys in the first space system that have three weapons systems, when the hell did that happen? This is easy motherfuckers I'm bad at this throw me a freakin bone here.

I assume they noticed that the Defense Drone 2 wasn't actually any better and in some ways worse than defense drone 1, so they probably made defense drone 1 worse, and buffed defense drone 2. On the plus side maybe that means defense drone 2 is really good now?

Man, I love the Lanius ship. Get a mind control system to go with the hacker drone and you pretty much obviate the need for a boarding crew. The way the new guys suck the air out of rooms also makes them pretty great for fighting off people boarding you. Eat poo poo mantises. I had a pretty hilarious/hosed up encounter with a rebel ship that had a clone bay instead of a medbay, where I hit the O2 with a drone, destroyed it with my burst and chain lasers, then killed the crew off with a combination of mind control, shooting the compartments they were in, and oxygen deprivation. They would keep respawning, one by one, and suffocating trying to repair something or break into the O2 room, only to respawn again. I had the ship down to 1 hitpoint so I kind of let it go for a while hoping they'd stop being recloned, but eventually I said gently caress it and opened fire and put the poor fuckers out of their misery.

Hard mode is not loving around. I 100% this game a while back, and I wiped my save in anticipation of this dlc. All I've managed in hard mode is unlocking the engie ship, the deck is really stacked against you now. Engie A is a strong ship, I can't imagine beating hard on, say, stealth B. Also the AI has gotten relentless at teleporting, hope you can kill your borders quickly or they'll be back!

Just finished a mantis B run and regreted my choice of systems. I chose Mind Control when I probably would have gotten mre use out of Hacking, because all I was really able to do with MC was what I would probably do with hacking (read, keep it from dodgind so I can take out a medbay), and because it bugged out on me several times and the MC wouldn't refresh when the enemy died, or in a few cases, just never wore off. It is a pain in the rear end trying to kill a dude you can't kill with a Mantis team while trying not to destroy the enemy ship, let me tell you.

So I got all the way to the final boss with Fed Cruiser A, only to realise that I needed to do it with the B in order to unlock the new variant. Then I died to the final boss on stage 3 because its next jump was the base and I thought I didn't have time to go and repair. Then I found out that they've changed it so you have a few turns after the flagship reaches the base to kill it.

Wow, the final boss got buffed! Stage 1 has hacking, and stage 3 has mind control. Every stage is as frightening as stage 2's drone swarm.

So far I've managed to unlock Fed, Stealth, Zoltan and Rock C's. I think Rock is the only one that doesn't look horrifyingly gimmicky. Fed C starts with the artillery beam, a teleporter, and no weapons . At least the inclusion of the cloning bay makes the ol' "lose crew on artillery beamed ship" issue a non-issue.

I think hacking drones attach to one system and stay there for the entire fight, so if it gets a crucial system, it might be worth it to jump away and hope it lands on a less important system next time. I haven't actually tried this though, so I'm not sure how well it actually works.

I got hit in the O2. Thank God I upgraded it to 2 pips, otherwise my entire crew would have asphyxiated. Whenever it actiated it was like having all doors on the ship open. I was able to couter it but it still took up a power pip for the entire phase.

It's pretty nasty when the flagship decides to immediately hack your shield system. Recovering from that is brutal depending how your ship is set up. Of course hacking their shield system is also amazingly effective. I have a hard time not doing hacking and mind control whenever possible because they are just so drat useful. A particular tactic I like is flinging a boarding bot over and then mind controlling whoever goes to fight it. So my one bot grows into a small boarding party and start wrecking shop. The crowning achievement was when I flung two bots over and mind controlled a guy on the flagship then hacked their mind control to reverse it back on another guy on the flagship. So two bots and two mind controlled dudes on the flagship just breaking everything. Space Skeleton fucked around with this message at 07:19 on Apr 4, 2014 |

Just made it to sector 7 in Zoltan A on hard, and only collected 857 scrap when I died. I still only had lvl 2 sheilds, I was flying this sloppy glass cannon for so long, it was fun. On a whim I bought a flak cannon to see how they'd do and was happily surprised that they clear sheilds so badassfully, making them a naural fit with the default halberd. Also the new shield drone gradually creates as Zoltan shield around you, which is nice against missles.

I don't think evasion rates were adjusted in any way, however the AI is now intelligent in how they distribute their excess power, so if you wipe out their shield or weapons systems that extra power will go to the engines...

Got mind control and Hacking by sector 2 as Engi A. Possibly not the best use of my scrap, but hilarious to watch. Also, the game has being incessantly throwing crewmembers at me, I've had to reject a couple already. E: Also, if all your dudes are dead but some are regenerating in the cloning bay, is it still an instant loss or do you only lose if your cloning bay is destroyed?

You have 2-3 seconds to power up (or finish repairing) your cloning bay before your dudes are lost for good. However there is an augment that saves your crew's data in such a situation (cloning bay depower/destruction).

Someone asked, and I also wondered, what happens if the clone bay is destroyed while it has crew in its queue? I just found a store with a Backup DNA Bank, for 40 scrap, which says "Your crew is safe in clone storage even if the system is off or broken". Also, my first encounter with the boss post-update, flying Mantis A. Right before this I had been thinking "this is pretty good gear for Sector 4," apparently having zoned out through barely clinging to life through the ensuing three. Hack drone hit me in the shields, boss cloaked...as soon as the hack drained my shields, the lasers and beams absolutely wrecked my poo poo. As the sizzling remains of the bulkheads sang their song of death through the bodies of my crew, flames licking playfully across the...whatever burns, in a fighting starship...before twisting into a roaring, screaming hellscape, the boss decloaked and let off a missile volley. The good news was that all of the hull breaches were in rooms that were on fire, and had been evacuated. e: gently caress, beaten

Vulcan Cannon I got one in sector 6 or so, and proceeded to chew through every ship up to the boss. Worked pretty well there too, except I nearly died freaking out about mind control. On easy at least, since I'm a baby. The Lanius dudes are sweet too, especially the phat beats they drop when repairing. Getting a couple and some upgraded doors makes for a perfect "Get hosed, invaders" squad.

Beat my first game for Adv. edition with Shiva. In the last battle I have 1 health left with a system burning with a quarter of the health remain, and the boss explosion animation just played out so slowly while I watch that little pip of health disappear, then in the very last second the credit roll, I won. Yeah!
