This is my interpretation of it as well. He one day got angry at a camera with vines on and the rest was history.

I like to imagine that Joseph was in a fight with someone and had come up with some elaborate plan to trick them that at some point required him to smash an expensive camera. His Stand ability was a surprise to everyone involved.

I'm so glad I waited for the anime to air before I read Stardust Crusaders. This first episode has just been brilliant, with a bunch of rad-awesome poo poo piled onto us at once and a better budget to make it all look incredible. Keep it up David Production!

Also I just want to say that Dio stealing Jonathan's body is just genius. It explains so much of how he managed to come back to life with a new body.

Have to say something that has been said again and again in this thread: it's really great to see people dive into what is the magnum opus of Jojo. I'm not even being a :smugbert: about it - Jojo just is that great. Part 3 steps into a completely different groove than Part 2 did. If Battle Tendency was Indiana Jones mixed with martial arts, vampires and ~WHAM~ with a heavy emphasis on its namesake fighting, then Part 3 is more of a mystery series with a "monster-of-the-week" flavor. Story and characters are as (if not even more) kooky as in Part 2 but it takes a while to get started. In that sense, Part 2 was more balanced: the story keeps moving and there's only a handful of characters to keep track of. Part 3 has _a lot_ of side stories that may feel like filler but it evens out with the variety that is present. After two completed parts of traditional fighting shounen, Araki wanted to experiment with new genres and boy does Stardust Crusaders deliver on that front. There's horror, adventure, fighting, oneliners, wacky hijinks and comedy, all in a mixture of some of the most memorable Jojo characters and story arcs.

You guys are really on for a wild ride. :allears:

I hope that the part IV anime has half this quality. You already know they are holding some back for the last three fights and its going to be amazing.:supaburn:

The more I think about it, the more it doesn't make sense. If you can have cool and complicated fights with spirit pokemon, you can have cool and complicated fights with the ripple. Part 2 did a pretty good job in that sense. Switching gears with a whole new power set seems unwarranted. Yet if Araki hadn't done that, would he not have become famous? Could he have articulated a stereotype the entire industry copied if the ripple had remained?

Maybe the anime will explain it later, but so far switching powers feels pretty ham-fisted.

It's more that Stands were something new because everyone in japan was loving sick of kung fu powers and even though Araki used them in an interesting way, it does not change that ghosts with special powers are infinitely cooler.

This is not a difficult concept to grasp.

Which is funny, because the ripple is the way more generic anime power, with the exception that's it exists as a vampire killing power up rather than generic power up. Stands are pretty different from other "this is my super power" devices, but you gotta let it settle in. Especially the villains will have very unusual or creative powers that'll surprise you. If you're afraid this will be too similar to other things you've seen, DO NOT WORRY. This is JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, after all.

Perhaps, but the rather generic ki powers are used in such clever ways and contrast so well with the weird ones. Like all of Joseph's rope tricks. And Wham and Ascended Cars had the best superpowers that I had seen for a long time. Deploy ports from my body that can shoot air, thereby bending light around my body and making me invisible? Turning my hand into a squirrel and eating a robot? Summon flying octopuses? Don't mind if I do!

But I have faith in Araki, if you guys say poo poo gets cool, then I'll believe you.

There's no actual given reason for WHY the change happened, he just did it. I guess he was inspired by something or got into his own groove and wanted to do that, it's not like he needs a reason for wanting to do something different than what most shonen manga was doing at the time.

Actually, JoJo part 3 came out around a time when a lot of manga was about people with psychic powers ("Espers") and Araki figured he was going to ride that very 80's trend. Orgia Carnival's right in that by this time, martial arts powers were going a bit out of vogue while psychic powers were "in" and manga authors had to work with the state of the market at the time, considering how competitive manga is. Being the idiosyncratic fellow he is, he put a spin on it and envisioned psychic powers as sort of a quirky spirit summon thing. This turned out pretty well, considering they're now very iconic to the franchise and have solidified Araki's well-deserved reputation for being creative and just plain weird with superpowers. They start out pretty general and get very, very specific as time goes on, and never really stop being really well-done barring a few notorious moments where Araki had to pull something out of his rear end--and even those are forgiven, since the rest of the franchise is of top quality.

Jotaro's power, at face value, is telekinesis, Avdol has pyrokinesis, and Joseph has a very specific form of remote viewing. At least this is how they're presented at the start, before Araki decides to expand on from the whole "these are psychic powers" to the really bizarre stuff he's famous for.

Yeah, as we go on and see more creative stands they're pretty much all X-files level stuff depicted in a way conducive to fighty mans manga.

THE TAIL THAT BURNS TWICE AS BRIGHT...

Yeah unfortunately while the Stands are good in Part 3, it's not until later in Part 4 when Araki really let his imagination run wild that they became AMAZING. There's really no comparison. All of Part 3 is fun as poo poo though and I am still psyched.

Note that "the author later took it to even better places" is hardly a bad thing to say about an idea.

Yeah, even as a first episode, Star Platinum and Magician's Red weren't used much. It was pure gold, but it didn't sell Stands, it didn't try to, and it didn't have to. Even with the more generic fight mans Stands, they are really cool and interesting, and the animation will make it come across even better.

Just saw the episode and this episode was everything as to why I love the adaption, they have such a wonderful sense of style.

Although I'm in this weird ditch of where the age of Jojo acts as a subconscious itch I can't scratch; lets put it this way as an analogy, say 30 years ago they just started this new and innovative way of building a house; but over the 30 years they slowly improve on that design such that when you look back at that house now and compare it to modern house you have some very obvious support columns that today are cleverly blended into the backdrop and aren't visible anymore.

It doesn't detract from my enjoyment of it but it is something to chew on.

Man, marathoning all of Phantom Blood/Battle Tendency in like 2-3 days and then immediately jumping into Stardust Crusaders gave me some kinda weird animation whiplash. That they actually have a budget now is perfect and looks great.

I cannot wait to see these Stands do crazy poo poo. And I gotta say, JoJo becoming remote viewing, racist, Indiana Jones is fantastic.

It's probably both. He legit loves Stands, but also he had to know kung fu was gettin real old.

Also just adding to people saying give them time, Stands are waaay cooler than just reskinned Professor X poo poo, the first bit has to establish them before things get nutty.
