I am frank with my bias: the sunflower movement will accomplish little, if anything. And the large percentage of the general public that supports them will not support them indefinitely.

They've already accomplished a number of things:

1) Even if the 服貿 passes, Ma doesn't have the political capital or cross-straits trust from China to sign further agreements before his term is over.
2) If the 服貿 passes in some strange way that have the flavor of autocracy, it will make things difficult for the KMT; see also the effects of White Wolf's insertion into the situation.
3) The leaders have created a political action network- in fact, they've been building it over the last 24 months (every political boondoggle or protest you've heard of over the last two years has their involvement). That's why they've been able to mobilize so effectively, they have an "infrastructure of protest." A failure to achieve their goals will most likely only further inflame resentment and a desire for action.
4) Political awakening: there's been a rapid change from politics being a taboo subject among young people into a passionate interest that demands action. Once people get involved, they tend to stay involved- the protests have encouraged the democratization of Taiwan's youth.
5) General voter education: voters are now 100% clear about what the 服貿 is, and any poor economic effects (in fact any poor economic situation at all) is now going to be laid squarely at the KMT's feet.

So in summary, the protest has accomplished
1) prevented further trade agreements in the near future 2) harmed the KMT's election chances 3) created a political action network 4) democratized a previously apathetic youth population and 5) educated voters.

If they actually prevent the passage of the bill, all the better. But in a way, they've already won and, politically, the passage of the bill could be even more beneficial to the movement than its defeat.

So apparently the horse posse is investigating any Taiwanese who participated in protests abroad- and making lists of names.

Oh, and the new history textbook for public high schools eliminated the section on the various aboriginal tribes and just grouped them into China's "High Mountain Tribes" ethnic group.

Which is sure making a bunch of Polynesian tribes people rightfully pissed off. They don't even live in the mountains. drat.

TRADE PACT SIEGE: Locked doors, secret password hold up legislative committee review meeting

quote:

“It is illegitimate for Chang to schedule a review of the cross-strait trade pact, because the Internal Administration Committee made a decision last week that a bill to monitor cross-strait agreements should be adopted before reviewing the pact. This is why we have blocked the meeting for two days,” DPP whip Ker Chien-ming (柯建銘) told journalists.

“KMT lawmakers could enter if they would say the password — ‘[President] Ma Ying-jeou [馬英九], step down,’ but I do not think they are likely to say that, so they will not be able to go in,” Ker said.

This is the dumbest poo poo. Even if you're not generally a fan of the KMT's policies, it's so hard to have any empathy for the DPP with grade-school antics like this.

sub supau
Aug 28, 2007

This is why I have trouble agreeing with the people who think the DPP is going to get a huge boost from this and why the insinuation that Lin Fei-fan is some kind of DPP sleeper is so dumb. The DPP acted just as much like children in the lead-up to all this, and have continued to completely misread the current situation just as badly as the KMT have. They might get a bump in the seven-in-one elections later this year thanks to the protests, but they'll soon enough revert to being biandang throwing children. If there are long-term effects from this, they will be political, but they won't be electoral.

Seems like Wang Jyn-ping and the majority whip are caving and will only review the trade agreement after a law monitoring cross straits agreements is in place.

They appear to be doing this as a "gently caress you" to Ma.

...which should make them popular enough for the moment.

Then it's a failure. Proper borders require splitting up some ethnic groups and you must include at least one angry, armed minority that absolutely hates the majority ethnicity/religion/whatever of the country you've forced them into.

Yes as long as the phone supports GSM. 7/11s sell top-up cards but to get the SIM itself you have to stop by a phone company shop either at the airport or in town. There are some ID requirements for foreigners. Last time I got a SIM from a Chunghwa Telecom office (near Fuxing Beilu I think?) with passport and U.S. driver's license.

You can actually just get a straight-up SIM and everything at 7-Eleven, just present ID (passport should be fine). You'll probably also need an alternative contact number, but when they asked me for one and I said I didn't have one, the clerk just filled in the store's number or something, I don't rightly remember.
