I decided to try out a Magyars/Hungary old gods start and oh my is it ridiculous. Getting 70k+ event troops for forming Hungary. Unfortunately my king became incapable in the middle of my conquest of Bulgaria but he lived long enough to finish it. His son that you start the game with was luckily rolled with Brilliant Strategist and Strong but then at some point picked up Possessed and Stressed. He's only 36 and the health bonus from strategist and strong should counter stressed, but is it worth being a truce breaker to the Khazars to get the last holy site to reform the Tengri faith so I can get out of gavelkind before everything goes to pieces. Finally, does the Tengri 30% bonus to light cav attack/defence make the Hungarian cultural retinue worthwhile?

That makes sense, thanks! I've had the worst luck converting counties to my religion this time but I'm having fun trying to survive on the border lands between the Byzantine and Abbasid Empires.

So why did Paradox make it so it's better to never hand out king titles as an emperor? -25 hit for vassal king but desire kingdom is only -20. vassal kings have larger troop pools too to cause trouble. I'm sitting on 2 empire titles and like 12 kingdoms and have no plans to ever give out a single one of them. I really liked the old way better where I could have vassal kings and deal with them rather than hundreds of dukes.

Well, I went ahead and just took all of Khazaria in one war. The invasion CB is ludicrous. Reformed the Tengri faith and got rid of gavelkind. Now how do I go about forming the holy order?

Check the revolt risk in your provinces, if it's over 50% you may be hit with a bug, but I've only seen that in Catholic provinces ruled by Norse and Indian religions.

There is only one thing stopping me from mending the schism/restoring the roman empire; the game tells me I don't completely control Latium/Prince Bishopry of Rome. You need to declare war on the pope for county claims.

I had about 1200 just kicking around from good play, so I decided to build a castle on my home county of Gwynedd. The year is 940~, so that probably puts me way ahead, and I have the tech levels to put some good points in on it. Any particular places you recommend I invest in on my castle? e; also, is it worth holding onto the counties of my home duchy in my Kingdom? I have been doing so just so that I had a permanent army of 1000+ always sitting in wait if I needed it, but are there any benefits of giving them away? Phew, I was wondering if I was making some grave error there by keeping them. Flintshire will never be parted from my King, even if it does not exist for another 800 years or so. Also, are stables worth prioritising over anything except the keep and barracks? Cavalry, from looking at stats, looks worth the investment. I am not even certain I have ever seen a heavy cavalry yet, so getting them before the rest of the world would be real nice.

Stables don't become worth it for a while in my opinion, light cavalry suck compared to archers from the militia, heavy infantry from the barracks, and overall tons of troops from the keep. I don't think you get heavy cavalry from stables until like the 3rd or 4th one.

If your home duchy really sucks other than your capital then it can be worth it to let it serve as, for example, lands for the crown prince; you shouldn't generally give it to some random dude because then he'll want your capital. Certainly in a big enough empire the best thing to do for your income is to take all of the best counties (Rome, Baghdad, Constantinople, etc.) and ignore the minor penalties you get from each of the dukes you're angering.

Okay then, makes sense. The numbers do look much lower than the numbers the others provide. Plus, because I am Welsh I get bonuses with having archers, like cultural charges. I already have a retinue of 1000 archers sitting around though, so maybe getting more is not too beneficial. There is a hot arrow economy in Gwynedd, fletchers must be so well off. I think in an average war, a third of my army is archers. e; Nah, in general Flintshire and Powys rule - they give very good levies and the second and third highest taxes in my Kingdom. The duchy in all usually makes up about 1200 troops, then my 1000 retinue. They singlehandedly can crush any revolt, faction or claim. (not like I have had any of those. My Kingdom is probably the most stable in the world right now. Every vassal loves me and is either 100, or above 50. I own 45%~ of England right now too, so I will soon be the Dual King. Plus, my son and heir is currently married to the Queen of Denmark, so when I move onto him, I will the the King of many lands. Their eventual (hopefully) son will be the King of Scotland too, if plans go together. Denmark already has strong claims on there. The Mongols can get hosed. By the 1200s, I should technically be Emperor of Britain, King of Denmark, and hopefully much more. I am steamrolling. Diplomacy specialised Kings are the best. My total army right now comes to something like 5000 (before mercs). It isn't even 1066 yet! I am predicting by the year 1000 I will at least be those titles previously mentioned, with a force of 20,000. Another Person fucked around with this message at 18:31 on Apr 6, 2014 |

So, retinues. I am Norman , and I quite like the extra oomph of the Knight retinue, but 1600 retinue points for 500 guys is harsh. Right now it's year 1100-something and I have about 3300 retinue points, so it's either 2 knight retinues or 1 knight + 2 "normal" retinues, seen that I can pull about 6000 man of levies from my demesne I'd be inclined to go 2 knight and join them to my levies to give that extra edge, but in the future I'd like to not even pull up levies to deal with small wars/rebellions. What's a good retinue composition generally speaking ? TorakFade fucked around with this message at 19:37 on Apr 6, 2014 |
