Eh, they'll get a bar of damage in if you don't stick someone in there to distract them for a bit but the big problem for me is that they almost always hit the pilot and kill my evasion.

You're forgetting one of the defenses against enemy mind control, where you target the victim with your own mind control. Really nice on Flagship 3 if you have the system and you've already taken out the enemy crew.

Are there any mods that just let you progress endlessly or something without worrying about the mother ship, preferably with just the vanilla weapons/systems/other content? I like the regular ship battles but forcing myself to build for the mother ship fight gets old.

You can depressurize the room they're in to make them leave and herd them into an empty room where they won't do any harm.

There WAS a mod called Infinite Space, it just continued endlessly. However, it only worked on the previous edition. Hopefully it gets updated for Advanced.

Speaking of Advanced, check out this baby on my Engineer C ship.

Let's see, lock enemies in a room and then drop a fire bomb on them. Also my Zoltan shield will make me god, and the fact I have the Defense Scrambler makes enemy defense drones a non-issue.
Also now I'm immune to 5 hits (or a couple of ion hits). :getin:

My favorite Mind Control counter is to send an Engi to brawl with the victim, whether it's for the entire duration of control or only a few seconds. This prevents the control victim from harming the ship, and the Engi won't rough up the shipmate too badly. Both crew will have to take a trip to the medbay afterwards, so it's still admittedly a poor man's solution.

Hey I got an event at an exit beacon for a pirate merchant who's offering to sell stuff and wants me to "come aboard", and there's an option to do that or decide it's too dangerous. I've never seen this before, and I don't know if everything will go fine or if the game will permanently take one of my dudes - while ignoring that I have a teleporter and would just be able to port him back.

So since I'm a huge baby, what can happen here?

Not ALL races have multiple colors. But it's still just cosmetic. No more will you have entire ships that are just clones of each other. You can even see the differences in the hangar by choosing to customize your guys.

Well Rock C starts with a Crystal crewman so you can probably skip the first two parts of the quest with it and just get to the homeworld and find the device.

I don't really understand shield hacking. The shields turn purple and the bar starts draining, and then...nothing? The actual shield pips don't seem to go away. I'm sure I'm missing something, although I've still found it useful if only to isolate the shield room so that they need to bust down the door to repair it.

I think I had that event, but I got a blue option because of my mind control device. If you decide to mind control him, he explains that he doesn't have wares for sale, and it was just a trap. Then you fight the ship.

Huh. That doesn't seem especially useful. You blow your laser load on the enemy ship to take out their shields, then I guess you could hack it to keep them down, but why bother? It's unlikely that your weapons will be ready to go again before the hack runs out.

If you got a beam drone, it's VERY useful. Blow your load on taking the shields down, since they won't recharge for a bit. Drones do the heavy lifting of beaming everything in sight.

I'm pretty sure it will remove pips if you have your hacking system upgraded enough but I think I used it on the flagship with a level 3 hacking drone and only took off two pips, which is pretty poo poo when you consider that as soon as that second pip is taken off, it starts recharging again, the pips don't come off right away, so you need to wait for the hack to run its course before opening fire, but shields recharge pretty fast so the timing is really hard. I'd hack literally any other system than shields personally, unless you just want to use the hack drone to lock people out of the room to prevent repairs.

Goddamn, I can't believe I just lost. I had a flak 2 and a Glaive Beam on phase 3 of the Flagship, but the first missile barrage knocked the weapons and the medbay offline. Then the borders and mind control started happening, and I could never reestablish control.

I really hate Rock A. The only reason this run was this successful was pure RNG luck. Found a random Pegasus missile system, then an Explosive Replicator to actually make all those missile weapons worth using. Ended up buying the Flak 2 and Glaive Beam right before the mothership, but the missile spam served me well.

The Hack drone does drain shields over time while it's active. After it hits the enemy ship, are you clicking it again to activate it? (I took me a while to figure out you had to do that.)

You're not doing system damage to the shields, just draining the currently active pips, which will only actually lower their shields if it goes on long enough. A level-1 hack to shields is pretty crap, a level 3 hack is very effective. Assuming they don't dodge every incoming shot to the shield system ANYWAY.

This brings up an interesting question. Right now I'm rocking an Engi B with 2 chain lasers and a charge laser, with only defensive drones, and level 3 hacking. Against the flagship, should I be hacking shields for the possible 7 hits (penalized by their dodge) or hacking piloting for the guaranteed 3? I feel like piloting is the better hack just because I don't have anything to punish the squad of 4 dudes all repairing shield simultaneously, and there's no way to keep out the repair crew forever.

Each full bar drain should deactivate one shield pip. It won't disappear, but it will turn "hollow" like recharging shields always do.
