1UPT? Cool. It was nice to be excited for a few seconds at least.

1UPT means the combat will be terrible like Civ V but otherwise I'm looking forward to this.

The only thing I'm not psyched up for is the mention of there only being eight civs/expedition sponsors, but maybe that's just all they have announced for the time being. Eight seems a little light, but hopefully the technology web thing will let there be room for a lot of individuality even within the same faction.

That's about how many there were in base Alpha Centauri, and they were all really different. Besides, if the modding support is as robust as Civ5's, we'll have the Alpha Centauri gang in this...I'm calling, a month after release.

The orbital layer reminds me a bit of Civ: Call to Power. Only the orbital and aquatic layers were pretty useless in that game. As long as there's some Miriam analogue to fight with and destroy, I'll be happy. The trailer really did it for me. Water pyramids? Rockets launching right out of downtown? Yes, indeed, it looks like a proper sequel to Civ V. Sign me the gently caress up. (Water Pyramids and Spaceship Victory are now canon)

Hahahaha. EA owns the rights to SMAC, so they had to do this instead. Which is fine! This looks GREAT!

I'm not sure how SMAC could be improved upon, at least in the narrative arena, so I'm glad they are categorically not trying to recreate it in many ways. All the stuff they've given out has made this out to be a different but still compelling game about humans in space. If it's really an AAA effort then I'm gonna love this.

There's been literally 0 good spiritual successors to SMAC since SMAC, even SMACX managed to do some disservice to the narrative beauty of SMAC by adding in pirates and hackers and communists as factions! The most recent SMAC-alike, though, came out earlier this year and it's called Pandora: First Contact. It's not a bad game, it's just very bland. It tries very hard to ape what Reynolds did with SMAC's lore, but just kind of fails in a wet-fart kind of way. As far as gameplay goes it's similarly bland, but has some good underlying thoughts.

Bloodly posted:*twitch* I don't get this. Civ 4 isn't even a decade old. This isn't some old 8-bit game from the 80s/90s we played as kids that we remember fondly when in actuality it wasn't all that good to begin with, this is a relatively recent and still very well-regarded game in the same series. Is it really so unreasonable to think that people who loved Civ 4 might not have liked Civ 5 as much even after expansions, especially given how much of a radical departure the fifth game was? Is that such an unbelievable stance that it has to be met with confusion and claims of blind nostalgia whenever it comes up?

There are people who refuse to even try it simply because it is not Civ 4. If you have tried it, and still dislike it, that is another thing, and is reasonable.

If you're an older player who happens to be reading this posting and thinking of getting back into the game, then some dude called Yitzi has been patching up his own patch for the past ~a long time. He's built on top of kyrub's AI stuff and allows you to change all kinds of stuff via a .txt file included with the patch. Here's the changelog and the download.
